I don't think it's anything to do with being common.

My parents always called it French Toast, no idea why.

Eggy bread. French toast is an Americanism.

Eggy bread. It's eggy, and it's bread.

jkklpu · 02/06/2009 20:43

French toast - my maternal grandmother was American so my Mum's passed on a few of these.

weepootle · 02/06/2009 20:43

French toast, didn't know it was also called eggy bread until I married dh.

JeanPoole · 02/06/2009 20:44

how do you actually do eggybread?

Overmydeadbody · 02/06/2009 20:47

dip slices of bread in beaten eggs, then fry in butter or oil. Season with salt or sugar depending if you want it sweet or savoury.

It's cooked bread though, so I guess that might be where the toast bit comes from?
