Eggy bread if it is just bread soaked in egg and fried but French Toast if more effort went into it and I used decent bread and I usually add cinnamon and Stuff.

Also, French Toast is for breakfast and Eggy Bread is for supper on a Saturday. I don't know why.

Eggy Bread if for me and dh, Gypsy Toast if for dd (she HATES eggs, wont even sit next to me if I have them, so wouldnt eat Eggy Bread. Called it Gypsy Toast and she loved it....kids.....)

Always thought French Toast was if you ate it sweet - we dont, always with ketchup

wombleprincess · 03/06/2009 06:38

me and dh argue about this alot. i am of the opinion that french bread usually has cinnamon, nutmeg or sugar added to it and is meant to be sweet or eaten with something sweet, whereas eggybread is just egg and savoury.

wahwahwah · 03/06/2009 11:45

womble - do you not have real things to argue about?

Pomi · 04/06/2009 16:41

Deadpiraterobots and annoyingdevil,

annaje · 04/06/2009 17:13

Eggy bread is just egg and bread fried and french toast is with cinnamon and sugar I thought - like the american's do!

Pan · 04/06/2009 17:14

french toast. Though the current MsPan is French and didn't have a clue on how to make it.

MrsMattie · 04/06/2009 17:15

Two different things in my house.

French toast - I use thick sliced bread or brioche, dip it in a mixture of egg and milk with a pinch of cinnamon and serve it with maple syrup.

Eggy bread _ I use sliced bread, dip in egg only and serve with ketchup

MarshaBrady · 04/06/2009 17:21

We called it pap-pair-doo when we were little (grandmother was French).

I see now looking at Othersideofthechannel we were saying 'pain perdu'.

Ah the nostalgia.

gYPSY BREAD HERE, doused in icing sugar after and fried off again quickly till it caramelises mmmmmmmmm

supagirl · 04/06/2009 19:25

We have both in our house

Eggy bread is ordinary bread dipped in egg/milk and fried and is usually for supper

French Toast is Brioche dipped in egg/milk/sugar and served with something sweet such as icecream, fruit sauce or maple syrup and is usually for breakfast

TheChewyToffeeMum · 05/06/2009 12:49

My mum called it fairy toast to get me to eat it. Usually with sugar or salt. Tried Nigellas donut toast recently - vvv nice but so filling.

callalilies · 05/06/2009 12:50

DS and I had some last night for our tea, yummy.

GreenMonkies · 05/06/2009 12:51

Eggy Bread!

mamadiva · 05/06/2009 13:00

It's officially called French toast.

Reason being that in medeival times they were really poor so had to use whatever food stocks were left.

Usually there would be eggs and stale bread (french especially because it goes off so quickly) left so thesewould be beaten together and fried to make a meal.

It did'nt actually originate in France it was just that their bread went out so quickly and was the widest used for the purpose in those days

bigTillyMint · 05/06/2009 13:02

Eggy bread - camping food

Metatron · 05/06/2009 13:14

Jux · 05/06/2009 17:56

that's really interesting mamadiva.

Gorionine · 05/06/2009 17:59

In Switzerland we call it "croute doree" which translates "golden crust" much more poetic!
