@lipglossandmascara, that is an interesting question. Kind of. My mum always cooked healthy food and since childhood I've always eaten a lot of fruit and veg, wholewheat bread and pasta, brown rice and pulses.
I've always been into quality food too, and eating healthily has always been important to me. Over the years, despite eating well mostly, I didn't eat really well all the time, when I was a student, when I was busy with work and children growing up, travelling.
At those times, I probably ate all the healthy things I do now, but with more cheese, carbs and chocolate and the occasional cakes, biscuits, pizza and fish and chips.
At the start of this year I decided I wanted to lose a stone. I'm 5'3 and was just over 9 stone, post menopause I'd put on weight. So I decided to carry on eating the same healthy things, but just cut down massively on the carbs and saturated fat.
For example, I used to have maybe a cheese sandwich with salad for lunch, that became just salad. Or I used to have granola with fruit, kefir and nuts for breakfast and I cut out the granola. For dinner I used to have wholewheat pasta with lentil and vegetable sauce but now rarely have the pasta.
I also switched to skimmed milk, decaf coffee and cut down wine to almost nothing. My family have always made healthy food from scratch. We've had organic fruit and veg boxes, bought quality wild fish and organic meat for many years and like cooking. But then occasionally we'd eat some easy ready made things I keep in the freezer.
I decided on occasions my family ate things like pizza or fish and chips from the freezer, I would no longer participate and just stick to the healthy stuff.
The end result is I'm now just over 8 stone and feel much better for it. I think I enjoy food more because I know it's good for me. And I've decided I'm going to stick with eating like this.
I'm 54 and realise I need to take care of my body, really it's what I've always wanted, but found myself focused on everyone else's needs for so long. It feels much easier now my children are older and more independent, one at 6th form and one at uni. Although when DS1 comes home in the holidays, he always comments on what great quality food we have and now nice it is to eat here.
How about you?
