1 black coffee

We ate out for lunch and I had roast pork belly with pommes anna, creamed cabbage and roasted carrots. 1 glass of white wine.

A slice of coffee and walnut cake in the afternoon.

For supper I've just had a very small portion of last night's leftovers, squash and cauliflower curry, no rice, no bread.

Beautiful! Love seeing your food.

Have you always been so super healthy with food, your whole life?

Netcam · 21/06/2024 22:16

@lipglossandmascara, that is an interesting question. Kind of. My mum always cooked healthy food and since childhood I've always eaten a lot of fruit and veg, wholewheat bread and pasta, brown rice and pulses.

I've always been into quality food too, and eating healthily has always been important to me. Over the years, despite eating well mostly, I didn't eat really well all the time, when I was a student, when I was busy with work and children growing up, travelling.

At those times, I probably ate all the healthy things I do now, but with more cheese, carbs and chocolate and the occasional cakes, biscuits, pizza and fish and chips.

At the start of this year I decided I wanted to lose a stone. I'm 5'3 and was just over 9 stone, post menopause I'd put on weight. So I decided to carry on eating the same healthy things, but just cut down massively on the carbs and saturated fat.

For example, I used to have maybe a cheese sandwich with salad for lunch, that became just salad. Or I used to have granola with fruit, kefir and nuts for breakfast and I cut out the granola. For dinner I used to have wholewheat pasta with lentil and vegetable sauce but now rarely have the pasta.

I also switched to skimmed milk, decaf coffee and cut down wine to almost nothing. My family have always made healthy food from scratch. We've had organic fruit and veg boxes, bought quality wild fish and organic meat for many years and like cooking. But then occasionally we'd eat some easy ready made things I keep in the freezer.

I decided on occasions my family ate things like pizza or fish and chips from the freezer, I would no longer participate and just stick to the healthy stuff.

The end result is I'm now just over 8 stone and feel much better for it. I think I enjoy food more because I know it's good for me. And I've decided I'm going to stick with eating like this.

I'm 54 and realise I need to take care of my body, really it's what I've always wanted, but found myself focused on everyone else's needs for so long. It feels much easier now my children are older and more independent, one at 6th form and one at uni. Although when DS1 comes home in the holidays, he always comments on what great quality food we have and now nice it is to eat here.

How about you?

@tahinitoast, my big luxury in life is a weekly delivery from Abel and Cole. Among other things, including a fruit and veg box, some nuts/seeds and fresh fish, I always get a jar of their unpasteurised Suur turmeric and curry sauerkraut. It is amazing!

Oh wow this sounds lovely, will have a browse thank you 😊

Thankyou for replying :) so interesting. Your body must be super grateful for how much goodness you eat everyday.

My relationship with food has been complicated over the years. As a child, we ate okay I guess. Always veggies included but probably too much 'freezer food' & processed snacks.

I started to take an interest in health & nutrition in my early twenties but also was struggling with elements of disordered eating and body image issues so it wasn't always with the best interests.

Around mid twenties I was through the other side of the disordered eating stuff and started to really fall in love with health and nutrition. Trying to choose whole foods as much as possible.

I am now early thirties and I think since having my first daughter 2 year ago, my health has become my absolutely first priority because I want to grow old as fit and healthy as possible. I drink only a couple times a year and just adore fuelling my body with goodness. Im now pregnant with my second daughter and I love knowing im giving her the best start :)

This post (and you) have really inspired me recently, so thankyou. It's so nice to connect with likeminded people x

@lipglossandmascara, thanks for your reply. Congratulations on your pregnancy. I'm impressed that you have resolved your relationship with food.

It's fantastic that you have been eating so well to give your children the best start in life. I certainly did the same and hope I role modelled the concept of eating well as much as I could.

It was difficult when I was a single parent for 5 years and was trying to manage everything, but eventually I remarried. DH has adapted from eating few vegetables to eating almost everything I do and being happy with the food I make.

But I guess to some extent I occasionally got sidetracked by his love of pizza and fish and chips, which I have now decided to stop having with him. At the time it felt like a compromise, so we didn't always eat the things I wanted, but I came to realise I couldn't really eat things like that without putting on weight.

Same with drinking. I didn't drink for years when I was pregnant or when my children were young and actually was very put off by my ex husband who sometimes drunk excessively.

When I met DH I started enjoying it a little, we used to share a bottle of wine over 2 days at the weekend and it was so nice to be with someone who could drink sensibly.

But I don't think it was good for my body. We now buy little 187ml cans of organic wine and maybe once every 2 weeks I share one of those with him, but I'm not bothered about drinking really these days.
