Food or otherwise, going on a 3 month economy drive but only want to buy things that are edible, good value.

not food, but drink. the fresh orange juice in the glass bottle is really good. i have never been as our nearest it 15 miles away, but parents have been and quite alot of the stuff is qiute good.

Sweetcorn

About 19p a tin compared to expensive Green Giant, nicer than the Tesco cheapie, and perfectly edible. I buy a whole tray at a time!

Speicalist cheeses - their Parmesan is very good - though not particularly cheap. Mozzarella etc all cheaper than supermarkets.

Things like household tissues, Mr Muscle.

And their weekly-changing special household things always worth keeping an eye on. I bought DH a Weather Station from Lidl and he's loved it - also some digital kitchen scales for me which I use all the time.

Sign up for their weekly email online and you will get notified of the things coming in as 'specials' for the coming week.

Fruit juices
Pesto (especially the red one, slightly spicy)
Part-baked ciabattas (diferent ones eg. black olive, walnut)
Dishwasher tablets
Olive oil
Balsamic vinegar
Parmesan

DP also like all the cold meats like Salami, Pastrami, coarse pate etc -I'm veggie so don't know

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:14

all the cheeses, some of the salamis and the pastrami. the ham isn't 'nice ham' enough for me.
the pasta is great, tomatoes are 19p a can, fruit juices fab, little rolls for keeping in freezer v handy. fruit juice excellent, am addicted to tomato for virgin marys.
all the fruit and veg (apart from apples for some reason) is excellent. sweeties and biscuits also good if that's your thing. (those half covered butter biscuits... heavenly). also fair trade choc for 99p.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:14

nuts as well. they do a range called, Nuts Royal that i give to dd to eat.

Cremolafoam · 10/01/2008 20:16

tin foil strong cheap and long
magic sponges
smoked salmon fillet
interesting cheeses-esp feta which comes on a 2 part pack
juice boxes
fizzy water
pastrami
packs of choc biscuits in a 2 biscuit pocket
cremant de loire wine
mangoes
coffee grounds ina tin
blackcurrant jam is lovely

Went to one here in Budapest last week and was impressed. Got tinned butter beans - yum. Tinned toms.

I did feel my overall shop was cheaper - even with buying a shredder!

BettySpaghetti · 10/01/2008 20:17

aitch - oh yes I'd forgotten about the chocolate and goodies!

Also their Fair Trade ranges seem to be growing

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:18

oh yes, fish, lovely undyed mackerel or a hot smoked trout pack. gravadlax good, so are beans and the feta 2-pack is genius. like buda says, you do save even when you buy mad random things like silicon bakeware.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:20

and their organic veg is good value too. i'm a real fan. we live near an M&S so we get stuff from both. lidl oatcakes, for example, are revolting, but you save enough to justify getting nice M&S ones. etc etc.

snice · 10/01/2008 20:21

Baby wipes
moisturiser
cleansing wipes
fruit and veg-usual prices are cheap and they have regular half price promotions
coleslaw(best DH has had apparently-I don't eat it)
Bottled water
Fruit juice in little cartons for lunchboxes
Cheese-esp brie and camembert
Coffee-they often have offer of 2 jars of Nescafe for £6
Ciabatta
Toys at Christmas time are very good

RubySlippers · 10/01/2008 20:21

this isn't food but their nappies are the best

no leaks, and v good value

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:22

and nappies! how could i have forgotten? pull-ups £3.69 for 20.

snice · 10/01/2008 20:22

Forgot chocolate of course

MilaMae · 10/01/2008 20:25

Thanks for that, so it would be defo cheaper to get a few of the things you've all mentioned than doing the whole shop at Asda???

I'm normally a Sainsburys shopper sbut have noticed Asda is much cheaper. Am thinking I'll need to pick and choose between the two. My youngest starts pre-school next week so I'll actually be able to browse properly instead of lobbing and legging it.

Yep, lidl is fantastic.

Went on monday and got a weeks worth of food (for me and one dd), including feta, smoked salmon, fair trade coffee and sugar, organic carrots/tomatoes/potatoes, mini mozzerellas, houmous, and a mini hot water bottle with fleecey cover for dd, all for under £30.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/01/2008 20:26

Another vote for fruit juice.

All manner of seafood - a big bag of prawns for £1.99. And not very economical but they do sell lobsters for £4.99 so I have one to myself every week because I am greedy bitch pregnant and need the iron.

A friend uses their nappies for her older daughter at night and thinks they're great. She also likes their cat food. Or at least her cat does.

Another friend loves their pizza & ketchup.

Ice cream is good, especially mixed boxes of hand-helds for the summer.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 20:28

i saw the lobster but was afraid. i got some trout from there once and it tasted of dirt.

the organic ketchup is nice, i can attest.

Cremolafoam · 10/01/2008 20:29

oh forgot about the icecream. fab mini choc pops and that walnut ice cream is delish.also herbs- we get the chili flakes that come in a litlle mill.v handy for pizza!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/01/2008 20:29

Browse away Mila - some of the brand name stuff isn't any cheaper though. They were advertising some butter or other as if it were a bargain and it was actually 2p cheaper in Waitrose (not that 2p is worth shopping around for, but you get what I mean).

Yes-forgot that Cremolafoam-the herbs and spices are v.v.cheap compared to normal supermarkets

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/01/2008 20:38

Sally says the pringle-style crisps are rubbish.

squimlet · 10/01/2008 20:42

pretty much everything is good and cheaper there.

ByTheSea · 10/01/2008 20:44

I buy:

big and small juice cartons
sweetcorn
tinned cannelini beans
pasta
ice cream
cheeses
parma ham
frozen prawns
frozen pizza
toasting waffles
bratwurst
there are some great fruit and veg deals as well, just shop carefully (I bought the most delicious crate of clementines there a month or so ago)
