Food or otherwise, going on a 3 month economy drive but only want to buy things that are edible, good value.

It's hardly ever worth buying branded stuff there (I think the giant-size packs of Walkers crisps may be an exception)

Much of the household stuff is excellent and v good value - things like bin liners, eco-cloths, washing-up liquid, batteries, light bulbs.

The big dark blue tub of vanilla ice cream with dark flecks of vanilla & strawberry lollies with icecream centres (DS2 talking )

Those big flat tins of fish in different sauces - I think they're disgusting but DH loves them.

They do small bottles of smoothies - 250ml I think for about 70p - great for grown-up packed lunches.

easier to say whats rubbish.

the pringle type crisps are mank. nods

i buy

diced smoked bacon bits ( like lardons, but about 1/2 price of most other supermarkets)

flavoured fromage frais in tubs - vanilla is custard coloured - cherry is sublime.

eggs, fruit juice, vitamins, kitchen roll, toilet paper ( aloe vera stuff) washing powder.

own brand shampoo/conditioner is a little hit and miss.

'Royal' nuts are great. peanuts are good. chorizo is excellent.

fruit and veg good, but shelf life a little short. they do tomatoes on the vine that smell like tomatoes!

they have a growing organic range as well.

i combine my lidl shopping with my asda shopping - i buy my meat at asda, remainder counter, freeze what there is and work my week around that.

in addition to what others have said, their jams have higher % fruit and lower % sugar than lots of others and cheaper too. Their Christmas puddings are FANTASTIC. My Mum bought us one a few years ago and i was a bit worried that it would be naff but is one of the best shop-bought ones I've had and was really cheap. Stollen great too.

Oh yes, jam - they do a fruits of the forest one you can't get anywhere else, it's lush.

Also the chilled curries - have a look at the list of ingredients in those; it's all pure food, not a chemical in sight and the jalfrezi is gorgeous.

The little snacky lunch pots with eg feta cheese and olives or peppers are great too.

I was going to go on Tuesday but I was ill

luciemule · 10/01/2008 22:35

all the yummy german cakes/biscuits (especially at xmas).

Dishwasher tabs

Pasta sauces

quark yoghurt

cheese

pizzas

salami

the weekly items - like kids slippers/pjs always good.

art stuff

garden stuff
horsey stuff etc

EachPeachPearMum · 10/01/2008 22:50

the only things I haven't liked have been the cereals esp the rice crispies ("GoodyRice") - nope not good.
also the basmati rice was a bit chemical-ly.
otherwise - it's all good.

moondog · 10/01/2008 23:08

Tell me more about this lobster?
Is it plain or smothered in sauce?

I go to Netto sometimes. Unbelievably cheap.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 10/01/2008 23:15

md - lobster is plain, cooked and frozen in seawater.

They have crabs too - big, brown Cromer sort or a box of little fiddly ones.

moondog · 10/01/2008 23:17

Sounds alright!
Must check it out.

Aitch · 10/01/2008 23:26

tell me what i'd do with a lobster. bearing in mind the trout tasted of dirt.

mumemma · 10/01/2008 23:31

sausages - small spicy ones in a double pack - German law prohibits the addition of fillers like bread so they are actually less full of crap than UK ones. My DCs love them.

lardons - small bacon bits, mentioned earlier

organic veg

smoked salmon

cured meats

cheese - especially feta and cream cheese

apple juice - large packs

moondog · 11/01/2008 09:04

I'd have the lobster plain with a squeeze of lemon and a glass of wine.

bogie · 11/01/2008 09:24

coleslaw yummy + fruit juices lovley
