Food or otherwise, going on a 3 month economy drive but only want to buy things that are edible, good value.

my fave is frozen wild Pacific salmon. Huge slab topped with herbs for 3.80. More than enough to feed family of 5 with veggies.

I do my main shop there, the only thing I've been dissapointed with is the meat, really cheap, nasty low grade stuff. But, tinned chicken noodle soup is the best I've ever tried, 80p for big tin.

lobster - I also have mine with a squeeze of lemon plus a huge pile of watercress and a dollop of mayo. Plus a glass of Chablis.

OOOO thanks for that getting quite excited about my Lidle expedition now-don't get out much these days

Lidl is a brilliant place for allsorts. Their own brand bathroom/kitchen cleaners are brilliant.

My dc got proper sketching pads just after Christmas for 59p.

We usually stock up on fruit juices, coleslaw, cleaning products, some fruit and veg (which is normally half price). Their tubs of ham are also good for packed lunches and contain no water.

We spend at max about £30 and then go to Waitrose for all the nice bits and can spend the same again for a lot less products!

They do tubs of mozzarella mini-balls for about 80p
Chorizo & Salami
Pesto & pasta sauces
Fruit & Veg (often have half price deals on and decent enough quality)
Plus it's worth going just to have a gander at the household things

I live in the middle of "ee yar" salford and ours always has horse-riding, golf & walking equipment in.
The nearest peoplem round here get to horses is nipping in the bookies

Ooh and I forgot - their toilet roll. Fab stuff. I ran out and had to used Tesco's over Christmas, couldn't wait to get back to Lidl to get theirs again.

I have even got my mil introduced to their toilet roll too and she won't have anything else either now.

If anyone hasn't been before and are thinking of going, take your own bags or look for boxes when you are going round as you have to pay for carrier bags.

no, they're different. there's a really posh one near my mum's house. also areas with high immigration have interesting stuff, it's like goinig on your holidays and mooching round the supermarket.

Aitch · 11/01/2008 14:58

i mean that in a good way... nothing i like better than a furren supermarche.

Aitch · 11/01/2008 14:59

take an ikea bag or similar, tbh, then you can just line your trolley with it and fling, before grabbing the more delicate stuff for another bag.

PersephoneSnape · 11/01/2008 15:19

oh! earl grey - about 59p i think? feta is about half the price of other supermarkets as well. i like the aloe loo roll - it smells nice!

they mark down their meat/cooked meat/sausages etc by 30% a good few days before the sell/use by date. if they have too much bread/veg they put it on the 'other' side of the tills and you can take it for free.

Madlentileater · 11/01/2008 15:58

ds1 works there, poor soul, his advice is buy their own brands...and wine is cheap and OK
v poor selection of cleaning products I found

not sure if this has been mentioned but their big boxes of 24 small stellas are much cheaper than anywhere else - something like £6.99 in Lidl vs £9.99 in other supermarkets - not sure about other beers/drinks
