What, apart from a shocking rip-off, nappy addict?! It's like chicken breasts that cost x amount more because someone has undertaken the extraordinarily difficult task of taking the skin off.

They are fine, just like fresh veg but MEGA expensive.

Sil used to bring one round every week for the dc to have whilst mil was babysitting even though I have fresh veg in.

nappyaddict · 10/01/2008 14:34

yes but sometimes they are reduced and i always wonder if they taste as nice as fresh veg but have never bought any.

i know, i know, they cost money... but these little darlings save me a FORTUNE in wasted veg.

If you are busy etc then frozen and tinned veg are better than no veg, I could not survive without them!

Mega cheap bolognase sauce: tinned tomatoes (I always use smart price) (or passata). I bought a bag of 'italian' spices from aldi's for 99p and have used this about 5 times and there is still half a bag left. Its absolutely delicious, I assume you will get this in lidl's as well.

Do they realy work Aitch?? I much prefer fresh veg and would be happy to pay a few quid to save throwing it away.

as unlikely as it may seem, they really do work. don't buy the small size, though, you really need the medium or large. i've been using them for years and i think i've only ever bought three or four packs, though, because you can dry them out and reuse them. plus i have a hierarchy of veg, starting with a new bag for salad, then an older one for broccoli, even older for carrots etc. so you really only have four bags on the go and then throw out the most knackkered one every so often.

can't you just use normal sandwhich bags with one of those clip things or would that not work?

Report
Aitch · 10/01/2008 19:42

they're made of some weirdy porous plastic and have some even weirdier japanese chalk thing that absorbs moisture.

does it stop chopped lettuce going brown and yukky?

Report
nappyaddict · 10/01/2008 19:47

oh yes silly me - normal bags would make it sweat wouldn't it.

Report
Aitch · 10/01/2008 19:55

chopped lettuce? i don't know. it does for bagged salads if you decant them, other than that i teke the outside leaves off a lettuce and use them when i need them rather than chop the whole lot. they really do work, seriously.

Report
Habbibu · 10/01/2008 21:24

Apparently if you tear rather than chop lettuce it's less likely to go brown. Can't remember where I heard that.

I doubt you'll get a lecture about the veg babyjjbaby, better frozen than none.
The gravy however, may eb too salty for your LO, I'm not sure, but I remember being told off for using it when mine were young.

i love frozen veg cos it can't go off and cos i don't drive it is easier for me to get a couple bags of frozen veg than trying to pick all nice fresh veg then getting back cos it takes up more room on the pram and then by the time i go to use it it useally goes off i went to a small veg shop cos people on here had said it worked out cheaper i was shocked a cauliflower was £1.30 and it wasn't even that nice frozen veg is fab

i don't find greengrocers to be cheap or that great round here but if you have a farmer's market they are usually quite cheap. if it's difficult carrying it back on the bus or walking have you thought about getting a veg box. loads of people use them on here. if you keep veg in the fridge it doesn't go off as quick. frozen veg is just as nutritious as fresh so no ones gonna lecture you for using it, it just doesn't taste as good that's all.

Report
stripeymama · 11/01/2008 19:17

Frozen veg are fine - they keep their nutrients better than some "fresh" veg that has spent a week sat around in the shop before you buy it!

Report
Aitch · 11/01/2008 19:20

i think there's a case to be made for frozen veg being more nutritious, actually. but the thing about smash and gravy isn't people being snootily disapproving, babyj, it's just too salty for a child of 8 months, that's all. unless it's home-made mash and salt-free gravy, of course.

Read the initial posts and stopped ...

I wouldn't really class fishfingers and chicken nuggets as processed food (as long as you buy the better quality ones). Since Jamie Oliver's expose of mechanically recovered meat, chicken nugget producers have cleaned up their act and generally chicken nuggets are made from 100% breast meat these days.

I generally cook from scratch and would wager that my children eat a better and more varied diet than most, but chicken nuggets and fishfingers have their place. Neither of them has spontaneously combusted as yet.

I think it should do babyjj - if the ingredients go in hot (it fry first and hot stock/water). Someone's looking for you on a for sale thread btw. It was in unanswered threads earlier.
