seriously, that delia smith recipe is the dogs... i did it yesterday.

just cold milk, butter, flour in a pan and put the heat on and stir fairly regularly. costs nothing, then add some el cheapo mature cheddar (more flavour to the pound than mild) and you've got a delicious home-made sauce without any weirdy preservatives in it. i honeslty don't understand why people do all that business of making a roux for sauces etc etc... totally unnecessary. try the delia, go on, it tastes so much nicer than a jar sauce and costs nothing.

Well done babyjjbaby, and there is a lot on that list that you won't have to buy again for a few weeks, like toothpaste and paracetamol. You can squeeze a LOT of meals out of that for your baby and yourself and they will be good healthy ones too - you will probably need to stock up on bread milk eggs cheese etc, but that won't be more than a tenner, i think.

Pat yourself on the back, budgeting is really hard work sometimes, and I wish they had taught it when I was at school, but they stopped in the 1970s.

babyjjbaby · 08/01/2008 20:52

the only trouble is we are all greedy lol

Aitch · 08/01/2008 20:53

i wish i'd been taught how to meal plan etc, i think it's so important and i struggle with it, but when i do it i save a fortune. you're doing well babyj.

colditz · 08/01/2008 20:53

cook lots of potatoes

Aitch · 08/01/2008 20:54

and lots of soups...
do you have a freezer?

inamuckingfuddle · 08/01/2008 20:56

you are doing brilliantly, you are better at shopping than me and I'm a good 20+ yrs older you can make some great meals using the stuff you bought and get to know what you feel happy cooking and what is a bit more of a hassle

nappyaddict · 08/01/2008 22:39

babyj i wouldn't really give anyone smash. it is really high in salt and lots of salt is good for no one. if you want to make mash quickly then bung a potato in the microwave scrape out the potato and mash with a bit of milk.

geordiemacminx · 08/01/2008 22:41

I gave dd fishfingers but only the best birdseye ones 100% cod or haddock. Value processed food are bad news. Make spagetti bolognese, thats cheap. get a small roasting chicken and a bag of carrots and potatoes.
Make a hot pot as follows
for 2 adults and 1 child use;
1lb stewing beef
1 onion
1 carrot (large)
3 medium baking potatoes.
Method
trim fat of meat and cut into smallish bites.
chop onion finely
chop carrots
put a layer of meat, then half onion, and half the carrot into a big dish and small slices of potato to cover the top of this. Repeat for a second layer until all ingredients in pot.
add a sprinkling of lo salt and pepper.
add 1 oxo cube diluted in water in a glass and add enough water to cover over potatoes.
Put lid on and cook on gas 5 for 2-3 hours.
Add bisto instant granules a spoon or 2 if it isn't thickened. Stir occasionally. Fill up with bread and butter as required.
Tuna pasta bake is cheap aswell.
If you use a local veg shop and a butchers it works out less than a supermarket because it lasts longer, so less waste on veg.

nappyaddict · 08/01/2008 23:51

here you go

chicken alfredo

nappyaddict · 08/01/2008 23:53

loads more here

and here

islandofsodor · 08/01/2008 23:53

I'd just make a chicken hotpot or stew, then you can freeze the leftovers and blend it up for baby.

Cube the chicken and start to cook it in water then add potatoes, carrots, swede etc etc.

Take baby's portion out then add a bit of gravy for yourself.

By the way, my tip after looking at your shopping list would be to ditch the frozen veg, except for peas. Fresh is much cheaper, frozen carrots are quite hard to mash up for a little one and you can always cook them up and freeze them in portion sizes for conveneience.

nappyaddict · 08/01/2008 23:54

and mn has it's own thread on slow cooker recipes too.

nappyaddict · 09/01/2008 00:08

fresh veg tastes nicer too.

also if you buy cooked meats try to go for the stuff off the deli counter rather than the stuff on the shelves in packaging cos that doesn't taste as good and is packed with salt and preservatives.

if you buy fish, the same applies. fish from the fish counter is always nicer than frozen fish.

babyjjbaby · 09/01/2008 00:08

thanks have u got just basic chiken one with like potatoes carrots stuff or do u just fill it up with water thick i now never used one b4
