DADDYCOOL'S MINCE PIE DISCUSSION AND RATING 2007!

DaddyCool · 28/11/2007 14:49

Hello laaayyddee's, I'm back with my mince pie rating and discussion forum. I missed last year as I was out of the country and stuck with only mince pies from my local bakery which tasted too much of cinnamon and not enough of brandy.

Let me remind you ladies that the taste testing is based ONLY on LUXURY mince pies and not bog-standard ones. Also, if you eat Mr. Kipling pies, you should be ashamed and you have no place to take part in this discussion ()

ok, well the start of this year's taste testing was delicious but a little disspointing as I suspect 1 company is making pies for various supermarkets.

My first taste test was Tesco Finest. Historically an unusual pie which sported a very thin, saucer like shape and very light soft pastry. This year's was different. Pastry was similar but it was a deep filled pie as opposed to it's old saucer like shape.

The dissapointing bit was that on my second taste test, the 'Asda Extra Special' pie, I found that other than the little snow flake punched into the top, IT WAS THE SAME PIE!

Both quite nice pies but I'm dissapointed with the standardisation of these pies.

Btw, I thought Waitrose Luxury pies were the best in 2005 with M&S a close 2nd.

Opinions please.

Pennies · 30/11/2007 10:15

OMG the mental image of sitting at home by a roaring surrounded by large boxes of various mince pies and testing them... with Daniel Craig

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 10:21

did you ladies see jonathan wossy's show last weekend? It was a bloody good show that night.

Must admit, even I can tell Daniel C is a sexy mofo!

DW is rather keen on him as well.

JRoss show was amazing that night. And I don't normally watch it but was hooked.

That suit DC wore .

I am now testing stollen. Have just had some weird M&S slice that wasn't very stollen like at all.

I'm surprised at your Sainsburys verdict - I thought mine were quite nice.

Aarg, Daddy, in the words of Fairy Godmother in Shrek2, 'You've forced me to do something I really didn't want to' ...
and now the pack of frozen Waitrose mini pies is open & defrosting. 'You've totally ruined my diet'
bought the Waitros minis because they looked suspiciously like the ones I enjoyed being given out with some mulled wine recently. However, they don't taste the same (though nice, just not as nice) but I have reason to believe the others were Starbucks so it is now my duty to compare.

However, on the plus side, dd doesn't like them (leaving 12 minis just for me) and in my haste for enjoyment, I have discovered that a partially defrosted mince pie is surprisingly pleasant. Now I just need to test them every 5 minutes to find the perfect state of defrosting. How many mince pies is too many?

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 11:24

when they come back up again.

All these supermarket ones suck.

The only ones I could stand last year were the Konditor and Cook ones.

NotQuiteCockney · 30/11/2007 11:34

The Konditor and Cook ones are tiny, beautiful, and absolutely lovely. And they have a branch in the Gherkin.

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 11:43

ooooh, aren't we posh.

Just wanted to let you know DC, that every time I see your farkin' name, I start singing it!

kickassangel · 30/11/2007 12:03

i would google for some really posh brands - fortnum & mason do deliveries by the way - but i have a poorly dd on my knee very grumpily demanding the charlie & lola site

SoMuchToBits · 30/11/2007 12:04

The best thing to accompany a mince pie IMO is a glass of port. Perhaps someone would like to do port testing as well....

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 12:09

yes, i do the port thing.

LadyOfTheFlowers - me too!

Thank goodness it's Saturday tomorrow, I had to eat Mr.Kipling mince pies last night, I told DP to grab some on his way home from squash and thought he'd get the tesco's finest so I could try them, but he though mr.kipling would be better.

I'm going into the City tomorrow though, to get some decent ones from somewhere!

If anyone can tell me the best hot chocolate too I'd be very appreciative.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/11/2007 13:30

lol

OrmIrian · 30/11/2007 13:31

I don't care. If it's got mincemeat in it and the pastry is reasonably soft I will like it. Sorry. I'm a tart for mincepies.

Not helpful I know. Anyway I make my own mostly.

MadMumsy · 30/11/2007 13:34

Costa coffee - Medium Skinny Latte and one of their mince pies - delicious....mmmmmmmmmm
