DADDYCOOL'S MINCE PIE DISCUSSION AND RATING 2007!

DaddyCool · 28/11/2007 14:49

Hello laaayyddee's, I'm back with my mince pie rating and discussion forum. I missed last year as I was out of the country and stuck with only mince pies from my local bakery which tasted too much of cinnamon and not enough of brandy.

Let me remind you ladies that the taste testing is based ONLY on LUXURY mince pies and not bog-standard ones. Also, if you eat Mr. Kipling pies, you should be ashamed and you have no place to take part in this discussion ()

ok, well the start of this year's taste testing was delicious but a little disspointing as I suspect 1 company is making pies for various supermarkets.

My first taste test was Tesco Finest. Historically an unusual pie which sported a very thin, saucer like shape and very light soft pastry. This year's was different. Pastry was similar but it was a deep filled pie as opposed to it's old saucer like shape.

The dissapointing bit was that on my second taste test, the 'Asda Extra Special' pie, I found that other than the little snow flake punched into the top, IT WAS THE SAME PIE!

Both quite nice pies but I'm dissapointed with the standardisation of these pies.

Btw, I thought Waitrose Luxury pies were the best in 2005 with M&S a close 2nd.

Opinions please.

wow. everyone is being very nice to me today!

I won't have my hands on the waitrose pies until Monday. I've never lived anywhere near a waitrose so I depend on colleagues who commute to bring the scrumptious product to work. Only problem with that is that you have to share and half the time, the box has been opened and one missing.

the waitrose one is the bloody bees knees

Mercy · 28/11/2007 16:17

lol Jangly!

Pennies · 28/11/2007 16:17

Bagpuss - wasn't it you who got snowed in last time we were testing? I hope you've gritted / salted the road to Waitrose in your area?

DaddyCool · 28/11/2007 16:18

and the waitrose ones have the tell tale sign of a really good mince pie - the two holes cut into the top to allow cream to pour in.

I'm so excited I could pee my pants!

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 28/11/2007 16:19

dp and i had to 'share' the last one !! lol

Misdee · 28/11/2007 16:23

i cant paratke in taste testing as am on a diet.

but if you find me a yummy one for santa then i will be v v v v happy.

sadchops · 28/11/2007 16:29

GET THE COIONTREEAU CREAM DC

bagpuss · 28/11/2007 16:32

Pennies, I think so yes! .

Oh, I also have a new tester on my team since last time - ds2 now 2.5 wasn't even weaned then, but his current appetite will make up for it this time I'm sure.

foxinsocks · 28/11/2007 17:19

why are you cancelling the office Christmas party? (How is new job?)

I (and ds) have mine with brandy cream. I find the M&S ones fair very well warmed up. The Waitrose ones are slightly more delicate in the microwave and I do them for 10 less seconds. I like them far better warmed up with the cream on the side.

Dh (and dd) are brandy butter fiends and have theirs cold with the brandy butter spread on the top like you'd spread butter on bread!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 28/11/2007 17:28

i gotta say mince pies are, as the name inplies, mince.
yuck

but welcome back DC! (you miss canada? i thought you didn't like it there??)

DaddyCool · 29/11/2007 08:46

well, we miss some of it. grass is always greener no matter where we are it seems.

i'm cancelling the xmas party due to a vote of we the management believing it to be naff and simply an expensive opportunity for our staff to get pissed and fight each other.

I've got the sainsbury's ones today. My initial impression is that they are identical to previous years but who knows. It's a bit early for me and mince pies so I'll wait an hour or so before giving my verdict.

at you lot being able to test mince pies from all the lovely supermarkets we don't have.

We have Tescos but they won't have mince pies yet. And they only do bog standard ones.

DaddyCool · 29/11/2007 09:06

it sucks to be you

Hooray for this thread! I thought of it when I bought some mini mince pies from M&S the other day! (Nice, I thought, but mini was the operative word!)

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 09:18

Oh crikey, this is not going to help me desperately trying to overcome my cravings for mince pies, though I have to admit I'm rather mroe tempted by xmas pud.
We only have tescos near us but I shall send DP into the city to buy whichever one wins.
FWIW, I like a pastry that is quite buttery and melts slightly in my mouth (not so much as the pie falls apart), it also has to be heated with thick double cream that has been glooped beyond recognition.

DaddyCool · 29/11/2007 11:59

ok, i've just had this year's sainsbury's offering and I'm not impressed. I don't think sainsbaggers have it got it right at all.

mediocre pastry, not enough filling, a little sweet and sickly.

Now don't get me wrong, I would eat pretty much any mince pie and I wouldn't kick one out of bed for eating crackers... or wearing skis for that matter, but i just don't think sainsbos have got what it takes to be in the running for america's next t.... sorry, best mince pie for 2007.

anyone agree?

You know DC - sometimes it does!

But I have some mincemeat in the fridge so I may just make some this weekend. NOTHING beats home-made!

VictorianSqualor · 29/11/2007 12:04

I have mincemeat too but I'm crap at pastry, I wonder if the garden centre that does all the posh fudge and stuff will have mince pies?

motherinferior · 29/11/2007 12:16

Hallo, DC, how lovely to see you.

I personally will be using a jar of mincemeat made by the divine Mrs Schadenfreude to make some.

Rhubarb · 29/11/2007 18:39

Putting on a bit of weight I see DC. Shame on you!

Now gerrof yer fat blubbery arse and make yer own pies you lazy Yankee poop-face.

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 08:48

make my OWN pies? what you think I am, a peasant or sommit!?

I hate to admit it but that custard and mince pie from McDonalds looks awfully nice. Might try that bad boy at some point.

OP posts:
purplemonkeydishwasher · 30/11/2007 08:54

dude! i can't belive you let her away with that 'yankee' comment!

i'm so disallusioned now,

DaddyCool · 30/11/2007 10:02

i'm afraid i'm not very patriotic so it didn't bother me too much.... plus, she's rhubarb.

OP posts:
Pennies · 30/11/2007 10:07

MaccyD's? DC you are surely contravening your own rules by moving from the luxury stipulation.

And with custard??? you should be turfed off this research forthwith for contaminating the project.
