DADDYCOOL'S MINCE PIE DISCUSSION AND RATING 2007!

Hello laaayyddee's, I'm back with my mince pie rating and discussion forum. I missed last year as I was out of the country and stuck with only mince pies from my local bakery which tasted too much of cinnamon and not enough of brandy.

Let me remind you ladies that the taste testing is based ONLY on LUXURY mince pies and not bog-standard ones. Also, if you eat Mr. Kipling pies, you should be ashamed and you have no place to take part in this discussion ()

ok, well the start of this year's taste testing was delicious but a little disspointing as I suspect 1 company is making pies for various supermarkets.

My first taste test was Tesco Finest. Historically an unusual pie which sported a very thin, saucer like shape and very light soft pastry. This year's was different. Pastry was similar but it was a deep filled pie as opposed to it's old saucer like shape.

The dissapointing bit was that on my second taste test, the 'Asda Extra Special' pie, I found that other than the little snow flake punched into the top, IT WAS THE SAME PIE!

Both quite nice pies but I'm dissapointed with the standardisation of these pies.

Btw, I thought Waitrose Luxury pies were the best in 2005 with M&S a close 2nd.

Opinions please.

I test-drove the Benugo mini-mince pies this morning and would say:

  • pleasant rather sweet pastry but pastry to inner ratio excessive; probably inevitable though given the size of the pie which creates a high surface area to volume ratio;
  • inner very chewy and had that faint savouriness you occasionally get in mince pies which is a bit disgusting but otherwise inexplicably quite nice;
  • overall mince pie experience: pleasant with a hint of disgusting but that seems to me to be true of mince pies generally.

I think I like the Co-op mini ones best so far. Different toppings on them instead of pastry lid, sliced pecan, almonds, crumble. Made them lighter. Really nice.

Haven't got an Asda local to me, but I'm blooming well off to find one this afternoon. All in the name of research.

the saisnburys ones - are we talking bog standard sainsburys ones or the ttd ones? The ttd ones are heavenly imo. I have a box of the M&S ones for xmas day though, so I'm hoping they are as nice. I was lured by the advert with the alcoholic cream on them, bought that too.

DaddyCool · 20/12/2007 16:16

We're talking the sainsbury's TTD ones and I don't think much of them.

OK, I think I've found the best ones so far.... Good old M&S

I had the M&S connoisseur ones. They were beautiful. They were by far the best so far... mind you, they were considerably more expensive than the others by 100% £2.99 a box compared to Asda which are a bargain £1.48.

epic thread

have no time to read

but i will now chuck thios into the ring: i prefer waitrose standard (red box) ones to their all butter ones

they are my pie of choice

same last year

found the duchy originals ones tres disappointing

OMG - I think I snaffled an Asda one today (warmed). It had a star on the top so that could possibly have been Tesco?. It was blardy lovely.

DaddyCool · 21/12/2007 10:54

the bad boy with the star on top is Asda. Tesco ones are very similar but with no pattern at all on the top.

Well done to Asda... that's Asda choice!

Oh No. I didn't get the connisseur ones from M&S (spelling wrong but I haven't got a box so I can't look). Got Mini, lattice and puff ones. Will have to go back.

jangly · 21/12/2007 12:45

Ah, there's on o in it!

NomDePlume · 21/12/2007 12:46

I still heart the Tesco Finest ones. I;ve gone for the more elegant mini ones this year. They are fab

jangly · 21/12/2007 14:34

Ooh,I just had one from a WI market. Now that was nice, though you get more filling in shop ones.

DarrellRivers · 21/12/2007 14:50

I had the M+S classic pies this year and they were fabulous,
light sweet pastry with delicious filling
Am trying waitrose tonight but not holding up much hope.
I am dreaming about the M+S pies and wondering when I am going to score my next fix.
