Gusto boxes

Just started the gusto boxes. Would anyone like to swap recipe choices? / hints?

I’m cooking the prawn farfalle today - about to serve it for lunch but baffled the online recipe and physical recipe card don’t match. One says rocket one says pea shoots - I assume that’s a sub but weird that it’s the physical version that’s correct!

Has anyone else made this one? Or have any tips on choosing gusto meals?

I have Hello Fresh and find the portion size quite erratic. Before DC1 came back from uni we had 3 person meals and quite often there was leftovers, but their 4 person meals can often be a bit stingy if you are not a pudding/afters type family and I often find myself adding some extra veg or using the meat for 3 people and adding a veggie substitute for myself. Not always, but certain recipes. One menu we ended up with 5 green beans each.

I keep using them though because it means I can reduce my Tesco shop to once a month.

Thank you!!

IdesMarchof · 14/02/2021 20:32

We made Goan fish curry today and it was very good - again we halved the chilli though. Would really recommend it

If anybody wants them, I have codes, others might have different offers
cook.gousto.co.uk/raf?promo_code=JUDE42069997&utm_source=iosapp Gives you 50% off your first box and 30% off your first box

Jemimatheragdoll · 15/02/2021 08:54

We've used both Gousto & Hello Fresh - taking advantage of the introductory offers and much prefer Gousto so have continued to use.

Like everyone else, got completely and utterly fed up with meal planning and cooking. Even when I roped others in to cook I still ended up thinking about it-helping them choose what to cook & then invariably end up buying what was needed.

Now dc are back at uni we're just buying for 2 (4 days a week) and adding in a lot of vegetarian dishes. I've also bought a few of the herbs & spices not already in my cupboard and cancelled the odd week and cooked some of our favourites.

As a pp said I'm not a fan of cucumber until Gousto told me to pickle it!

Frazzled2207 · 15/02/2021 09:10

@bonfireheart

Simply Cook is the little boxes, I found it really bland.
Ah yes. Was rubbish. Really odd consistencies in the mini boxes which put me off. Then unlike gousto impossible to recreate. And expensive for what it was. Not recommended.
nomorecrumbs · 15/02/2021 21:50

Ah yes I have looked at Simply Cook but glad I decided not to try them out; boxes of seasonings didn’t appeal to me. I want all of the ingredients in one go!

I also have a referral code if anyone wants it then DM me - 50% off first box then 30% off the next few.

IdesMarchof · 15/02/2021 23:06

We made Thai chicken tonight with ginger greens. I completely messed it up and the chicken was both tough and undercooked when it came to the end of the cooking time. Probably user error but will not be ordering that again!

We've had a fair few Gousto and hello fresh boxes over the last few weeks (I've told myself this week will be the last one...). Like others, I prefer Gousto - HF are nice enough but there's nothing special about them. They also sometimes give you a bigger sachet/pot than you need so you have to check the quantities for everything and sometimes measure things out.

The only Gousto meal I've been disappointed in was the Brazilian one pot chicken with saffron rice. Didn't taste nearly as good as it looked. Everything else has been a hit.

That Normandy casserole looked good but I'd already ordered a HF box for last week. Really disappointed to hear it was indeed good and I missed out 😂

moolady1977 · 15/02/2021 23:30

I've not tried the gusto box only the hello fresh boxes and I'm beginning to run out of recipes to pick from as oh can't eat rice or pasta and a lot of them are those ,are the gusto boxes the same with most recipes pasta or rice based

bonfireheart · 16/02/2021 00:14

MutteringDarkly · 16/02/2021 07:45

Making me hungry. Our order this week is smoky fish stew, and sweet and sticky Chinese pork. Can't wait for Friday... this is our second week of trying it and I already have the envy of people who go for 4. Hmm. Will have to have a look at the budget!

IdesMarchof · 16/02/2021 08:13

@MutteringDarkly we are trying 4 but I actually think it’s too many as the dates were quite short. So basically we have to cook the meals every day for four days which I have found a bit much. Thinking about going down to 3 if the dates aren’t a bit longer on the next few meals

OP posts:
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 16/02/2021 08:16

Our box comes on Monday and we’ve been known to have meal 4 at the weekend . Admittedly we don’t have meat or fish in the mix where dates may becomes a problem, but certainly veg lasts just fine for the full week.

IdesMarchof · 16/02/2021 08:18

Maybe that’s what I need to do @GingerAndTheBiscuits - just make sure one of the meals is a veggie one

OP posts:
SpamIAm · 16/02/2021 13:40

We just freeze the meat if need be, I haven't had issues with the veg going off.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 16/02/2021 13:54

We are enjoying it - on our fifth week now and did it just because we and the kids were getting very bored with my usual meal planning during lockdown.

The kids have never eaten so much veg - that's the thing I like the most about it. The recipes have shown me interesting ways of getting extra veg into a meals. It all feels very healthy.

Favourite so far was the lemony smoked fish and spinach linguini 1646 - I've also since cooked it with stuff bought from Asda.

Also enjoyed the Brazilian haddock Moqueca (974)

We've found the chicken recipes to be less of a hit with everyone but the sweet chilli chicken stir fry was lovely.

The tandoori fish (916) was amazing but not enough for the four of us ( I made it again another day and used extra fish)

I also save the little sachets of herbs etc and use my own form my store cupboard so that I can take the little sachets away with us when we go camping next.

Bonsa · 16/02/2021 14:00

If anyone would like 50% off their first box and 30% off the following three boxes then DM me for a code!

We joined Gousto over a year ago and had only intended to do it for a month but we love it!

LittleFriendSusan · 16/02/2021 16:27

@IdesMarchof

Oh no, we really enjoyed that one!

We had the Katsu chicken yesterday. Everyone else enjoyed it - I thought it was nice enough but don't think I'd bother again (I cooked and not sure it was entirely worth the effort!). Also I should have followed my instinct and flattened the chicken breasts a bit first as I found it difficult to cook through without burning them, but thought i would try as per recipe first.

Our next box should arrive today - we've gone for Miso Tofu, Cheesy lentil stuffed portobello mushrooms, fish tacos & salmon & prawn fish pie.

bonfireheart · 16/02/2021 16:44

DD always orders chicken katsu when we are eating out and none of my attempts at home have been great, until I tried the gousto one and it was a big hit :)

nomorecrumbs · 16/02/2021 17:24

The referral codes are great Grin you shoulda never have to pay full price for a box (I think it’s a bit a bit overpriced at full price but 50% or 30% off is a good deal).

I have a referral code to give to whoever would like it...

Top tip: Gousto chicken breasts tend to be very thick, and don’t always cook through in the time allotted, so cut them across so they are half as thick or cut them lengthways halfway through cooking so they cook evenly inside.

IdesMarchof · 16/02/2021 21:57

@LittleFriendSusan we had the Thai chicken leftovers reheated today and it actually tasted amazing! So I take it back Grin

I’m really looking forward to next week’s box now
