Mumsnet Village Show - An Afternoon Tea Tray for One

Slubberdegullion · 26/06/2007 13:46

So here we are again.

So far the rules are:

Tea tray for one

Can include anything you want suitable for a summer high tea (sandwiches, scones, cake, biscuits etc) with suitable cutlery and crockery and the like. (Silver service if you are terribly posh)

Five quid budget (on top of what you already have in your larder).

SlightlyMadScientist is the judge (heaven help us...is she properly qualified???)

Oh and all entries will be anonymous this time (A, B, C etc).

Time limit is 9pm next sunday so we can be judged before bed time.

The rules will obviously be bent or completely ignored but so long as its tea ish then anything goes.

Not posting pics till later

MrsTweedy · 29/06/2007 14:10

I'm not joining in this one as I have a major deadline and a mad weekend looming but I'm really enjoying everyone's efforts so far. My afternoon tea tray atm would be a mug of tea and a penguin which couldn't compete.

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 14:46

Could Entrant E please attend the marquee.....?

May I ask a couple of questions about your Scone

  1. Does it contain any ellicit ingrediants of any kind?
  2. Was it homebaked?
  3. If not - where did you get it...it looks rather delicious?
EntrantF · 29/06/2007 19:51

Mine are up.

A very polite question for madamme judge.

Is it still OK for my DC to do an entry tomorrow? Perleeeeeeeeeeeeese?
They are very anxious to have a go, and they have a little tea set they would like to display upon.

Thank you.

May I also add that your ankles look very slim with that apron on.

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 20:33

OF course...so long as your DC uploads his entry prior to jusging that is absolutely fine.

If your DC would kindly use an alternative entrance ticket (e.g. Entrant H) that would be kindly appreciated.

TigiCupCakes · 29/06/2007 20:45

My entry will be slightly delayed, the homemade jam is still bubbling, and the homemade champagne still fermenting. I am just in the process of finely crocheting my homemade teabags for my homegrown organic tea leaves. I will have my handknitted tablecloth ready to iron in a moment after it has come through my mangle. It smells of the aromatic scent of my garden grown rosepetals which was used in the final rinse.
My entry will be uploaded as soon as I can get it all ready.

FrannyandZooey · 29/06/2007 20:59

Entrant F is my kind of gal

now that's a decent portion of food at last

shame she has the berserk idea of putting mint in sandwiches

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 21:03

Well mint is far better than peanut butter!!!

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 21:07

Oh and just so as you all know I have had an emergency request to judge at the NetMums village show on Sunday. Although I will in all likelyhood be back on home turf by late evening to judge the entries it does mean that I shall be unavailable to endorse any requests of me.

FrannyandZooey · 29/06/2007 21:09

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 21:10

Don't you just love men?

MrsFish · 29/06/2007 21:37

Whe he brings home the pay packet yes

MrsTweedy · 29/06/2007 22:04

Very surprised to see people put jam on top of clotted cream, looks weird to me! Surely the jam goes on first, then the cream can be piled on top?
And of course milk should go in tea after it's been poured.

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 22:09

What if I like my tea black?

Slubberdegullion · 29/06/2007 22:11

Oh no Mrs Tweedy I'm with F, cream is the substitute for butter, and therefore goes on first.

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 29/06/2007 22:12

In my world milk goes in 2nd.

This comment may well cause a kick off I know. I will alert the popcorn gumbies forthwith.

OP posts:
MrsFish · 29/06/2007 22:20

I do milk second, and after a search on afternoon teas, it seems commonplace for jam to go on second

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 22:24

I think what they are saying is that Entry E lacks milk althogether....that had already been noted on the judges comment card

MrsFish · 29/06/2007 22:26

Aren't some teas meant to be drunk black?

MrsTweedy · 29/06/2007 22:27

Still think scone-jam-cream looks nicer; the jam breaks up the beigyness. Personally prefer cream tea scones without sultanas in, too. Are there differences between a Devonshire and a Cornish cream tea?

SconesandMajesticSandwiches · 29/06/2007 22:30

Not being too familiar with teas I also assumed that some (fruit/herbal?) were supposed to be drunk black...I was therefore not going to comment

MrsTweedy · 29/06/2007 22:32

Some teas are meant to be drunk black, or with lemon, I only mentioned the milk thing because of the jam or cream first query.
