Would like to make one for dd's 1st birthday , do you think I would be able to get hold of a HUGE paper cup for the base IFYWIM !!!?????or would it be best to make it myself out of baking paper ?? & any ideas on the base to cook it in ?? Want to make it look quite authentically like an old fashioned cup cake. Would also like to make tiny mini ones to sit beside it and give to all the kiddies after, can you get mini paper bases?? oooh and some sugar icing wrapped parcels any ideas ???

You can get mini cake cases (less than 1 inch accross) at sainsbury/tesco/asda.

You can get large cake cases about 6-8 inches across but I've only ever seen them for catering. If you do make one (out of paper) I would put it in a pudding basin or it could flop....
Parcels are easy ready roll icing large square/rectangle cake - cut to size and cover then decorate

Blimey Melsey, very Jane Asher

The large cases are often waxed (I think) and for things like saverin - but I haven't seen them recently

melsy · 26/08/2004 22:59

You can buy tin liners made out of greaseproof paper at Lakeland (of course!)
here Could you make a huge cup cake in that? Don't put too much mixture in then it won't rise to the top and you could put icing in to recah the top of the liner. Don't know if that makes sense but hope it helps!

soapbox · 26/08/2004 23:05

Melsy - would these be any good??

from Lakeland - the round ones at the back???

soapbox · 26/08/2004 23:05

Tommy - great minds!!!

lavender1 · 26/08/2004 23:06

Melsy, have never seen these in the shops, but then I go to tescos and don't visit cake shop places....idea....but probably a bit off your original idea but maybe get your greaseproof paper and cut the circle base bit a little larger than your cup cake (use a cake tin that is not too large as your dimensions)...then measure the circumference of the outer bit and cut the grease proof paper the right depth,,,then fold it like you fold a fan until you have gone all the way around...

stick the bottom piece to the base of the cake tin by using marg and a brush, then align the fan-like paper to the sides....get the mixture and out it in

btw if your cake tin is too shallow in depth, maybe you could use a plant pot (although not sure at what temperatures they can tolerate) or use 2 cake tins (the ones with the removable bottoms and balance them on top of one another)....sounds well creative Melsy...much luck...let us know how it goes pleeeaase

P.S. I've had a few tonight as feeling very happy so please excuse the daftness!!

KatieMac · 26/08/2004 23:09

The ones on the link look similar - the ones I remember have larger flukes so might look more cupcake like (IYSWIM)

melsy · 26/08/2004 23:09

OH faberoooney you 2 , what would I do withought you girls, probably pulling my hair out and dissapointed that I cant do what I wanted to do!!!do you think I could dip them in food colouring 1st to make it pink, or are they waxed ?? I know Im mad but I get these ideas & I just HAVE TO do it!!!!!!!!!!Ijm even gonna start practising next week. Would it be good to stand it in a cake tin to cook ??

melsy · 26/08/2004 23:12

Yes I wondered how deep they might be kati mac, i wnat to get the proportions right !!! Its the virgo in me !!or are you talking about the depth of the folds??

You must tell me how you know all this kati, are you a pattiserie chef or caterer??

soapbox · 26/08/2004 23:12

Melsy thin you would need to put it in a cake tin, otherwise the cake might flop. Just take it out once its cooked. (Don't forget if its messy after baking in it, you an always take that one off and put it in a fresh one for decorating.

I think it sounds a fab idea - your DD is a very lucky girl!!

KatieMac · 26/08/2004 23:13

Yes do put it in a tin (or casserole dish) to cook it won't be very stable and I'd use a farily stiff cake mixture

melsy · 26/08/2004 23:15

aww thankyou soapbox, Im an arty farty who thinks they can put their mind to anything !!!! Think I may have to accept some messy mistakes b4 I get it right though!!! Expect tears over the next few weeks !!!

soapbox · 26/08/2004 23:17

Well do let us know how it goes - I'll be expecting some photos of the end result. Might crib from you if it works - DD(6) would love the idea I'm sure!!

melsy · 26/08/2004 23:20

Just read that theyre silcone , so may be wont be able to dye it pink !!! oooh cant wait to try !! need to buy some ready made sugar flowers too and need ideas for what to put on it ; glitter, mini flowers, vermicelli ???????

OP posts:
soapbox · 26/08/2004 23:22

Melsy - Siansburies do some nice Barbie shakers of mixed cup cake toppings. All in pastel colours. They also do flowers etc. The barbie glittery one is DD's favorite.

Papillon · 27/08/2004 09:46
