Weird Food ... what unusual things do your kids like to eat?

My ds (2.5) loves mussels. When he was 22 months, we went on holiday to Holland and ordered a huge bucket of them. He must have eaten half of them without pausing for breath.

Now he has them every weekend as a treat. It's the only food he gets truly absorbed in.

I like the idea of wide-ranging tastes in food. I don't want to go down the pasta route all week (hardly ever do anyway), but do anyone else's kids like unusual stuff that I could add to his repertoire?

Those herring roll mop type things from Ikea
Sushi here too, and prawns and mussels, squid, kidneys...

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 19:12

Fantastic, all of it! Beats bloody pasta (which has its uses about once a fortnight at best).

ggglimpopo · 28/04/2007 19:20

DD2 adores mussels and had her birthday party last year in a restuarant that specialises in mussels.

Ds loves langoustines

DD2 eats raw dijon grain mustard by the spoonful - ugh.

Scootergirl · 28/04/2007 19:24

DD, who is 3, LOVES beef jerky and particularly the shredded kind which is like beef dust.... She sometimes sticks her face in the tub and licks round to get the last bits out

pointydog · 28/04/2007 19:26

it's a bit freaky how many of you are saying houmus, olives and seafood. Is that mnetters favourite food?

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 19:27

My first encounter with mussels was on a school trip to France when I was 12 (first year of secondary school). That would have been 1977/1978. I remember that the hostel served mussels as the main course, and all the other kids gagged and refused to eat them.

I ate the bloody lot. My plate was so high with mussel shells it nearly touched the roof.

My ds doesn't like Marmite, though. Very disappointed about that.

Pointy for us sea food is walking down to the village and buying what has been caught so we have it quite a lot and so DD id big ion fish particulalry fish pie with lots of bits in it.

controlfreaky2 · 28/04/2007 21:40

a lot of these things are v v salty..... which is probably their attraction to the dcs..... capers / anchovies / olives / smoked foods / salami / chorizo..... too much salt is bad idea (for anyone)

SeeYouEntee · 28/04/2007 21:41

DD has a seemingly limitless capacity for olive-eating.

She also loves sardines and pilchards.

pointydog · 28/04/2007 21:49

oo controlfreaky, adding some sizzle. Children only after the salt! The SALT!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 28/04/2007 21:52

More seafood here! All 3 DCs (aged 5, 3 & 2) eat prawns, crab and lobster. (especially crab meat mixed with cayenne, finely chopped ginger, spring onions & red pepper & baked in oven till crispy on top).

DD1 has loved parma ham since she was about 2.
DS1 is a Japanese rice cracker fiend
DD2 will eat any cheese known to man.

Crispy duck and pancakes is their absolute favourite. Which is alright by me!

pointydog · 28/04/2007 21:53

I just see salt now

Rachmumoftwo · 28/04/2007 21:58

My 2 dds can often be found 2 doors down with our Thai neighbour eating all sorts of lovely food. They love it, especially sesame prawn toast and noodles. They also like sushi, a mild curry, goat, venison and duck. Yes, I do tell them what it is, rather than serve it up as 'meat' & keep quiet.

QueenofBleach · 28/04/2007 22:45

Duchess that sounds fab might have to try it some time

pointydog · 28/04/2007 22:58

this thread now needs someone to refute the salt

mamazon · 28/04/2007 23:00

DS fave food is ham & jam sarnies.

they make me feel ill just thinking of them but he loves them.

and they are so nice he doesn't even complain about the wholegrain bread if he has them

butterflywings · 28/04/2007 23:03

I know it's not really what you're looking for, but my DD loves cheese and jam sandwiches... Sometimes with a slice of luncheon meat in them too!

Not my personal favourite...

butterflywings · 28/04/2007 23:04

lol, mamazon - just read your post!

seeker · 28/04/2007 23:04

DS is a natural for a Victorian orphanage - his favourite foods (after chocolate, of course) are bacon fat, brussel sprouts and the stem end of asparagus (he says the flowery end that everyone else likes is yucky)
