Weird Food ... what unusual things do your kids like to eat?

My ds (2.5) loves mussels. When he was 22 months, we went on holiday to Holland and ordered a huge bucket of them. He must have eaten half of them without pausing for breath.

Now he has them every weekend as a treat. It's the only food he gets truly absorbed in.

I like the idea of wide-ranging tastes in food. I don't want to go down the pasta route all week (hardly ever do anyway), but do anyone else's kids like unusual stuff that I could add to his repertoire?

and ds1 doesn't like chips - would rather have crispbread than chips with his tea !

CaptainUnderpants · 29/04/2007 09:03

Youngest loves really mature cheddar.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 29/04/2007 09:27

sunflower seeds
and uncooked pasta.

She would rather have seeds than sweets which is good but a but suprising.

Sunnflower seeds are a favourite in our house aswell !

I have reviewed this thread and would recommend that due to high numbers of seafood and olive eaters, that these items should no longer be called unusual.

Having said that, my DCs hate olives and pick them off pizza etc. (climbingthewalls - so there's 3 children that don't like them).

pointydog · 29/04/2007 11:35

I agree duchess. These foods are obviously not unusual at all.

Mmmm speccy, I'm going to try that now! Sounds good. I love liver.

Duchess you can claim your DCs are the unusual ones not liking olives then!

JARM · 29/04/2007 17:30

Another one whose kids dont like chips, or beans, tinned spaghetti or eggs - not complaining, but they rarely eat anything much.

Certainly nothing on the lists below - but then as me and DH dont eat fish, isnt unusual.

We are very much good wholesome british food - meats and veg!

Girls also wont eat spaghetti or noodles - think its the long thin thing - they gag on it.

Black olives, those prawn dumplings in Wagamama, garlic sausage (nice) (20 months old dd)

erm, I have a child who hates chips? Is thast unusual enough for you??

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 30/04/2007 12:40

DD2 doesn't generally do 'kid's food', although she does love chips and would give her right arm for sausages. She is a total carnivore and devours black pudding like it was a plate of chocolate buttons! She likes anything with a bit of a kick - curry, onion bahjia, salsa etc. She seems to prefer peppery to salty. She is very partial to calamari (and fish in general) she helped me make kedgeree a few weeks ago, but ate half the smoked haddock (which had been boiled in milk) whilst flaking it up for me. She is 3, BTW.

Inrockuptible · 30/04/2007 12:52

Why are all these foods you are listing considered 'weird'?

haggisaggis · 30/04/2007 12:58

Mine (7 & 4) like shellfish but hate olives.

THey also both love cucumber and lettuce (I hate both) and have been known to fight over spinach.

rabbleraiser · 30/04/2007 13:10

Inrock, you're right, it's not weird food ... it's just interesting to see what other kids eat which is away from the normal presentation of pasta/chips/baked beans, etc.
