Weird Food ... what unusual things do your kids like to eat?

My ds (2.5) loves mussels. When he was 22 months, we went on holiday to Holland and ordered a huge bucket of them. He must have eaten half of them without pausing for breath.

Now he has them every weekend as a treat. It's the only food he gets truly absorbed in.

I like the idea of wide-ranging tastes in food. I don't want to go down the pasta route all week (hardly ever do anyway), but do anyone else's kids like unusual stuff that I could add to his repertoire?

black olives
Sushi

mrsflowerpot · 28/04/2007 16:59

chorizo. both mine love it (and ds is a spectacularly fussy eater)

also spinach - was the only veg ds would eat for ages

collision · 28/04/2007 17:00

ds1 likes black olives, raw chickpeas, salami and pepperoni, raw mushrooms

ds2 is a pain but does like hummus!

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 17:05

Olives, he doesn't like (as yet).
Sushi ... I'll definitely try him with that.
Chorizo - another definite.
Spinach - don't think he's had that yet, but he does love broccoli so I'll get it a go.
Hummus - doesn't like.
Salami - he loves it.

Oh, and he's not keen on mushrooms as yet, which is a (minor) disappointment because I love 'em.

dd likes olives, prawns dipped in brown sauce!, crayfish.

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 17:10

I've noticed that if children like olives, the majority tend to be girls.

Wonder why?

Cos they go nicely with their martinis and painted nails.

edam slices between white bread and then squashed and pressed completely flat.

The pressing disgusts me

I always preferred raw veg as a kid. Makes me wonder why we bother cooking it for them.

Edam sandwiches? Yeeech. I do remember as a kid pulling the crust off processed bread, and then rolling the dough into a ball and eating it. (Bread was stodgier in the 1970s). But because I was a kid, the dough was always grey from dirt.

Happy memories.

Anchovies!!! Yum, I'm going to give him some of those.

My mum used to eat raw tripe with vinegar!!

I haven't given him liver or kidney yet (hog it all for myself), but I think I will. Just cut the liver into thin strips and give it a light fry. Dunno about the kidney though.

Naaaaaaa, IT'S MINE.

Ds (6 in August) loves and always has loved:
-olives - black or green

  • hummus - all varieties
  • smoked salmon
-chorizo - chunky and thin
  • in fact any Italian cured meat
  • raw mushrooms
  • rocket
  • king prawns

in fact the only things he doesn't like are peppers, cooked mushrooms and jaffa cakes

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 17:53

That's a couple of times raw mushrooms have been mentioned. I've alway given them too him cooked, so I'll leave that out next time.

Plenty of trace elements in them, too, and probably much better for you raw.

smoked salmon and had scallops last night in fish pie and loved

sunnysideup · 28/04/2007 18:03

ds is a man of many parts and eats lots of stuff that I'm quite surprised about really, like radishes or sushi, but I think his most unusual combination recently was shreddies dipped in tomato sauce. [vomit emoticon]

DontCallMeBaby · 28/04/2007 18:06

Not unusual, but for an almightily picky child, DD's love of garlic surprises me. She also appears to like very dark chocolate, although that may be purely to spite me (I told her she wouldn't).

rabbleraiser · 28/04/2007 18:13

Love smoked salmon. So does ds.

Scallops - I'm ashamed to admit that I've never had them but I'll bite the bullet (and the purse) this week and try them out.

Never tried him with dark choco - don't like it myself, tbh, so it's not really come into his orbit.

Shreddies and tomato sauce sounds divine. That's tomorrow's breakfast sorted out.
