I've actually stopped caring about food

Twiglett · 26/04/2007 16:25

I really have

I'm not sure I ever cared particularly that much

but then that's from a background of me enjoying cooking so have quite a good and varied diet of fresh food and lots of fruit and vegbut honestly couldn't tell you last time I read a label

it just seems so nonsensical to worry about it

and I'm quite happy for them to have biscuits or crisps or sweets too or a pizza from Iceland (woodburned) or ice-creams like Fab (which I'm sure were invented by the antithesis of MN foodies)

anybody care to join me in this dim and dingy corner of Mumsnet where most other posters believe we're going straight to hell?

I think the thread was possibly started so that people who generally feed their kids healthy food but actually don't mind if they have the odd biscuit/bar of chocolate/pasty/sausage roll can feel that there are more people out there with the same views.

I think most people who posted on this thread meant no insult to the group of mnetters who have made a decision not to allow there kids 'unhealthy' food.

There are plenty of threads dissing mums who are seen given their kids crap, don't you think this might include a group of mnetters?

Boco · 26/04/2007 18:41

If that's true f&z it's certainly not true of everyone on this thread. I do care about food, and love cooking and love healthy food, but do also lapse and crave the odd bit of junk - no judgement of anyone else and certainly no offence intended to anyone else.

[and very grateful to moondog for two lovely recipes so far]

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2007 18:42

"it just seems so nonsensical to worry about it "

"most other posters believe we're going straight to hell"

"is that Moondog? shall we shove her out of the way?"

"heheheheh think we're crowding out the foody-freakoids now"

"I think thats just cruel, and a little obbsesive."

"I can't bear is people who preach that their kids only eat organic, no additives etc and are really precious about it and then they go on a night out and drink bucketloads, eat crisps, and get a kebab on the way home"

"She's convinced that a teaspoon of sugar is enough to send her son hyper."

these posts (all from this thread) aren't saying "I believe this is the best way to feed my children, how about you?"

these posts are attacking and making fun of people who do things differently to you

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2007 18:43

and Boco no it certainly is not true of everyone on this thread

I am sorry if I implied that it was

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:43

Making a virtue out of not giving a shit what your children eat, boasting (a la "dd had cake for breakfast today", "dd3 lives on lollies") is just a bit sad, really. I don't give a fuck what your children eat either, obviously. But this sort of thread just looks a bit spiteful and childish and, well, pointless really.

Oblomov · 26/04/2007 18:43

I am totally with chloe.
I don't read labels. We eat healthily. Not worried about bad foods either.

Wasn't really taking the mick out of any other mumsnetters. End of.

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:44

Oh, and I am not teaming up with Franny, I just think it's a shit thread.

DumbledoresGirl · 26/04/2007 18:44

Not joining in the argument which this thread seems to have degenerated into, but just responding to the OP: I am with you Twiglett. I always have been. I do try to get my children to have their five a day (they actually average 2 or 3) and I mainly steer clear of the worst processed foods, but I am not a huge label reader and I am mainly just happy to see my children eat 3 meals a day.

I would never want to offer offence to those who read labels assiduously and cook all meals from scratch though. I admire them in a way. But I do not think what they do is necessary for good health.

Aloha · 26/04/2007 18:47

Just got back from Cafe Rouge, where you can feel blissfully middle-class and smug about feeding your children chips, mayonnaise and chicken/fish nuggets and ice cream for tea, and mummy and daddy can get quietly pissed on good quality French beer and house white. Heaven.

I honestly don't think anyone is being personally mean.

Aloha · 26/04/2007 18:47

And I'm a horrid food snob and have admitted to it on other threads.

Oblomov · 26/04/2007 18:47

and I don't agree with greensleeves that , "dd had cake", is making a virtue out of bad eating.
Its just a lighthearted, saying, sometimes I/ dd/ds/ whoever eat nothing but bad things all day. I am no saint. But not going to worry about it either.
I find this acceptable. Not offensive.

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2007 18:47

It's only the posts below that I object to, I think

sorry for my own splatter gun criticism - was unintentional

Twiglett · 26/04/2007 18:49

FFS .. it was a friggin' joke .. and if you think moondog can't take a joke then you are the one with the problem

As for using the words 'freakoids' sorry about that .. that was an attempt at a joke too

But I do have to say that the self-righteous worthiness that seeps through some threads on here get right up my nose .. not specifically talking about food it happens a lot in a lot of subjects

So forgive me if once in a while I like to burst the bubble and be a little more 'Joe Average' and admit to my perceived failings which actually I feel make me normal

I don't just do it with food topics .. I feel the same about loads of topics that have parents quivering before they'll make a decision . .. there was a thread earlier about which breakfast cereal for a 2 year old ... we have actually got to the stage where people are worried over a friggin' breakfast cereal ... my children sometimes have croissants or pain or chocolat or toast and honey .. and you know what .. its good for them!

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 26/04/2007 18:49

F&Z and Greeny, I admire you both immensely. But I have to say, there have been some food threads where the main argument has been your side of the fence (if I may call it that) and they have been extremely offensive to others.

I know, because, although I do not consider myself either a health food fan or a junk food fan, I have been somewhat disturbed by the ferocity of the argument.

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:49

not the one isolated comment Oblomov. The smug bonding over not giving a crap about what your children eat that is this thread and its purpose. I have been known to utter the words "ds had cake" myself, in fact, under various different circumstances, but usually without smirking and being an inverted snob.

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:50

And DG, it's because of silly childish crap like this that there is a 'fence' to be on either side of.

motherinferior · 26/04/2007 18:50

I agree with Twig.

FrannyandZooey · 26/04/2007 18:51

I didn't find it funny, Twiglett

but then I don't think I was meant to

because the joke was aimed at people like me

I will say again, I don't think this thread is about discussing your own parenting practices

it's about criticising other people's

it's nasty and snidey

I'll leave you to it

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:51

Yes, we know, you've said

DumbledoresGirl · 26/04/2007 18:51

But some people do have lower food standards (if you want to think of it that way) and they do like to start a thread for people of like minds, just to make themselves feel part of a group. Really, what is wrong with that?

Twiglett · 26/04/2007 18:51

oh fuck off

OP posts:
motherinferior · 26/04/2007 18:51

No, FFS, we do not 'not give a crap' about what our children eat. But we find it, for various reasons, impossible to maintain absolute rectitude over their diets. Or the telly they watch. Or their friends.

Greensleeves · 26/04/2007 18:52

Fuck off yourself

Heathcliffscathy · 26/04/2007 18:52

do you feel guilty?

feels like a guilt assuaging thread and there ain't nothing wrong with that.

Porcupine · 26/04/2007 18:52
