Breakfast ideas for 2 year old - what is the least bad cereal after weetabix

Im sure this has been asked before but would be grateful to hear some current suggestions.

My ds 2 normally has weetabix then toast or fruit but I and him are getting a bit bored. At the weekend I do things like porridge, pancakes etc but weekdays are very rushed getting ready for nursery and work - we get up at the last minute in this house - so any ideas for anything quick and easy?

What is the next least bad breakfast cereal after weetabix and porridge? Are cheerios in any way healthy?

shreddies? rice crispies?

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 21:44

CHeerios are full of sugar and/or sweeteners.

What about bog standard rice crispies or cornflakes, shreddies maybe.

I am sorry I havn't checked the labelling recently - but these would be the first I would check out. The ones to avoid if you are looking for least bad are obviously the chocolate ones, sugar coated (frosties/ricicle type things) and crunchy nut type varieties - probably anything aimed at kids actually ...

Washersaurus · 25/04/2007 21:44

We often ponder this question as the routine of weetabix or porridge with fruit can get a bit dull.

Sometimes we give DS a boiled egg and soldiers (which he loves to eat from a poncey Alessi egg cup), or scrambled egg for breakfast - they are ready in minutes.

Dottydot · 25/04/2007 21:45

Not Tesco's chocolate hoops, oh no...

Washersaurus · 25/04/2007 21:46

We also have bitesize shreddies which I don't think are too bad

ChasingSquirrels · 25/04/2007 21:46

ds1 has tesco malt wheats, which don't seem to have added crap. and they taste quite nice. tesco instant hot oat porridge is really quick - 20 secs in m/wave - I add in some pureed fruit for ds2. guess where i shop - lol.

Most of the others have got sugar in them, and I can't see a 2 year old eating shredded wheat, somehow. My dd (2.3) went off the healthy cereals months ago, so I'm afraid I now just give her Shreddies, or Cheerios. I suppose the wholegrain ones even with added sugar are better than coco pops etc.

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 21:48

I thought shreddies would be fairly innoculous....willing to be corrected tho.

jdd0709 · 25/04/2007 21:49

Good idea with the scrambled eggs and shredies and rice krispies sound ok, will have a look - I looked at Cornflakes but they have a lot of salt would you believe tho he does sometimes have some of mine. I think ds would love boiled egg and soldiers but unfortunately I have a thing about runny egg - makes me heave even thinking about it. Maybe will get dp to do him one. Thanks!

Cheerios are Nestle btw if that's something which concerns you

jdd0709 · 25/04/2007 21:51

so bite size shreddies - what is the evrdict? Anyone got some in the cupboard to have a look?

Kallo do a no-sugar puffed rice. And I think most puffed rice cereals don't have much sugar. Ditto corn flakes, tbh. Yes, there's sugar, but the g of sugar/100g is pretty low.

Muesli?
I like the Dorset Cereals around at the moment.

ShrinkingViolet · 25/04/2007 21:52

we sometimes do poached eggs in the microwave - once you've worked out hwo long to do them for so that they don't explode everywhere you don't get the runniness factor

Washersaurus · 25/04/2007 21:54

jdd - I also can't stand runny egg, I don't even like washing up the egg cups (blurgh) - that is why DH always prepares that particular breakfast

NotanOtter · 25/04/2007 21:54

i only allow;
Weetabix
all Bran
shreddies
porridge
muesli ( but check sugar content they vary HUGELY)
Shredded Wheat
Ready Brek

jdd0709 · 25/04/2007 21:55

cool, he likes raisins, that sounds good - muesli sounds healthy but is utterly alien to me - do you have to soak it or anything?

You can get own-brand cereals which look just like Sugar Puffs but aren't sugary. My ds liked those for a while. I eat the real Sugar Puffs...

NotanOtter · 25/04/2007 21:56

I am a bit fussy about cereals!!

Dottydot · 25/04/2007 21:56

We've got about 8 varieties of cereal on top of our fridge (stacked 2/3 high) and the rule is one lot of sweet stuff and then 'good' stuff to follow (ds's have at least 3 bowls of cereal each, each morning - we get through 2 - 3 packets of cereal a week...). Good stuff however includes rice krispies, special K (which they are addicted to) and shreddies.

OldieMum · 25/04/2007 21:57

Bite-size shredded wheat do well on the low-salt front, but they are very boring. We ate them for years but have finally had too many. DD (4) has rice pops, which she likes. We rotate this with porridge and toast (though she announced last week that she now dislikes porridge). Don't know where to go from here!
