Breakfast ideas for 2 year old - what is the least bad cereal after weetabix

Im sure this has been asked before but would be grateful to hear some current suggestions.

My ds 2 normally has weetabix then toast or fruit but I and him are getting a bit bored. At the weekend I do things like porridge, pancakes etc but weekdays are very rushed getting ready for nursery and work - we get up at the last minute in this house - so any ideas for anything quick and easy?

What is the next least bad breakfast cereal after weetabix and porridge? Are cheerios in any way healthy?

I know you said you wanted to get away from it but porridge takes only about 4 minutes in the microwave, and that is me doing 2 portions for dts (age 5.) A plastic bowl is so much easier to clean than a porridge crusted pan! Chop up some bananas, or strawberries or add some raspberries or a handful of raisins, or a squidge of honey on top or whatever fruit he likes. Variation that way.

My rule is healthy breakfasts during the week and junky ones during the weekend. That way avoiding the whole nasty-mummy-won't-let-me-have-Coco-Pops routine and avoiding being too much of a dictator over their food!

Are we saying that weetabix is the most healthy breakfast cereal? No way!

You can get Kallo puffed rice which are very good, no added sugar or salt. Also something called Morning Puffs, and we also have puffed quinoa and quinoa flakes (yes, honestly...)

they have a good selection here

We make our own mix from oats and whatever we feel like adding. Dried fruit, fresh fruit, seeds, nuts etc

We limit the sugary cereals to the school holidays, and then only 1 bowl per day. Otherwise they have a wide range: bran flakes, rice krispies, cornflakes, weetabix, raisin wheats, plain oats or porridge (we only allow a bit of sugar on the weetabix though). My mum tells me that I should make a protein breakfast because some research has shown that it is better for children's sight, plus it lasts longer etc However, my kids are pretty fussy on the ready-proteins front, and I just haven't time on school mornings.

If anyone wants specific data give me a shout but I am going to bed in a bit....

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 22:46

Oh and Shreddies have 15.5g sugar per 100g - which has just pushed into teh red (15g seems to be cut-off) - otherwise green/amber.

Cheerios have 35.4g sugar/100g according that table.

Slightlymad-Frosties or some kind of muesli?

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 22:59

Lots of the value/basics/smartprice products seem to be better than the comparable 'luxuary' products actually.
