Breakfast ideas for 2 year old - what is the least bad cereal after weetabix

Im sure this has been asked before but would be grateful to hear some current suggestions.

My ds 2 normally has weetabix then toast or fruit but I and him are getting a bit bored. At the weekend I do things like porridge, pancakes etc but weekdays are very rushed getting ready for nursery and work - we get up at the last minute in this house - so any ideas for anything quick and easy?

What is the next least bad breakfast cereal after weetabix and porridge? Are cheerios in any way healthy?

Frosted shreddies have less sugar than cheerios

NotanOtter · 25/04/2007 21:57

jdd ...muesli is just add cold milk and eat .. all mine love is although ds1 says it has to be 'swiss'

NotanOtter · 25/04/2007 21:58

they need to not only be low sugar but FILLING for me to approve!

chestnutter · 25/04/2007 21:59

Erm... Cheerios - I didn't think they were that bad???

[guilty hand rising]

That's what ds's claim as well - they're insistent that Cheerios fall into the 'good' category, but oh no, mean mummies only let them have 1 bowl full...

I always stock up on Cdn cheerios when I'm home - the ones here are sugar coated and are awfully sweet

Washersaurus · 25/04/2007 22:04

I'm sure there was a Which report or something about cereals - I can remember downloading a table that charted them all from somewhere (pc has since crashed so no longer have it)

fridayschild · 25/04/2007 22:06

At the risk of sounding like a lentil-weaver, we make our own meusli: various nuts blended to smithereens by the DS1s in the mini blender, and then assorted dried fruits and oats.

This is far too tasty for children to eat on a daily basis, they only get it at the weekend . I smuggle a tub to work and eat it there. Boring old weetabix and porridge in the week, followed by toast if they are still hungry.

Arriety · 25/04/2007 22:06

Readybrek (or generic cheaper brands in our house) is better than weetabix I think as it has no salt or sugar and has niacin and thiamin etc added. And dead easy cos you just warm the milk and chuck it on!

Bellie · 25/04/2007 22:06

dh thinks that cheerios look like go-cat!

Nemo2007 · 25/04/2007 22:07

how does kelloggs multigrain rate?

jdd0709 · 25/04/2007 22:08

so many ideas now! thanks everyone, will go to the supermarket tommorow and get some muesli and shreddies I think and look at the rice pop type things.

Glad it's not just me with an egg phobia - I like the taste of cooked eggs but I can't stand runny or raw - I find it hard to even break an egg into a cake mixture or anything - oftem have to get dp to do it which causes a row as I always accuse him of leaving bits of shell in but can't bear to look.

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 22:15

OK the Which report is a mega document (23 page PDF). Give me a few minutes and I will see if I can summarise a few things....makes v interesting reading BTW, there are a few surprises from what I can see (top line)

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 22:19

can anyone access this or do you need to be a registered member

SlightlyMadSecret · 25/04/2007 22:20
