Feeling nosey and trying to work out some sort of routine now I'm back at work. Would love to know:-

1 - Do you give your children a snack when they get home from school or do you cook tea straight away?

2 - What time (roughly) do your kids have their evening meal?

3 - Do you and your DP/DH eat with children or later?

4 - Do you all eat the same meal or do you make seperate dishes for children and adults?

5 - Do your children have "supper" (ie milk and biscuit) before they get into bed?

Thanks.

DS1 is at school, DS2 not. I work 4 days per week, they have a nanny then.

1 - Do you give your children a snack when they get home from school or do you cook tea straight away? On way home normally - a bagel, fruit bun, foccacia etc

2 - What time (roughly) do your kids have their evening meal? 5pm

3 - Do you and your DP/DH eat with children or later? When we're there (me on 1 day don't work, at weekends). DH doesn't get home from work until around 8pm so save his on day I don't work. Nanny doesn't have her meal there.

4 - Do you all eat the same meal or do you make seperate dishes for children and adults? Same meal if I'm there. When I'm working DH & I have a separate meal.

5 - Do your children have "supper" (ie milk and biscuit) before they get into bed? Yes, warm milk and toast or a wrap, just milk for little one.

Well done nogin

1 - Do you give your children a snack when they get home from school or do you cook tea straight away? - Doesn't finish school until 5pm - so takes packed tea (sandwiches & yoghourt plus fruit/cheese/tomatoes) to eat there before clubs. She has a snack when we get in - sometimes cake, sometimes crisps, often with some fruit. She doesn't usually want anything else tbh.

2 - What time (roughly) do your kids have their evening meal? Has packed tea at school.

3 - Do you and your DP/DH eat with children or later? We eat later - not usually before 8pm

4 - Do you all eat the same meal or do you make seperate dishes for children and adults? At weekends we al eat together - same meal, but I choose things she likes - like roasts etc. We save spicy foods for the weekday evenings as she doesn't like them.

5 - Do your children have "supper" (ie milk and biscuit) before they get into bed? Not usually - but she does have apple juice before the bedtime routine !

I'm shocked that so many of you eat so early - we don't get into the house before 5.30pm and dh is very rarely home until 7pm. DD goes to bed at 7pm (she is 6) and it is frankly a rush to get her homework and bath done by 7pm without cooking a meal as well ! I don't think she needs two cooked meals a day - so on school days she has cooked lunch and packed tea - at the weekend we may have two cooked meals !

Am now feeling like a shabby culinary failure mummy !

Hulababy · 24/03/2007 14:00

scatterbrain - we eat at 6:30 as it is when DH gets in from work, and it has always been important to me and DH that we all eat together as often as possible, exp during the week. Besides I can't wait till after DD is in bed - I'd be snacking all the time beforhand!

BeckleSpeckledEgg · 24/03/2007 14:01

1 - I don't give them a snack when they get home but they are always allowed to help themselves from the fruit bowl and usually do.

2 - We have our evening meal around 6 - 6.30 depending on what time DH gets home.

3 - We all eat together, I think that's important.

4 - We all have the same meal, DCs rarely eat all of theirs but there will always be something they will eat. Occasionally I will do them separate meal if I know they won't eat any of what DH has ie stew.

5 - They have milk or water before they go to bed but bedtime is not too long after dinner.

scatterbrain · 24/03/2007 14:06

Hulababy - wouldn't work for us becuase of timings ! DD needs to be in bed at 7pm - so it's non negotiable in the week.

My dad used to come in at 5.55 on the dot and the tea was always going onto plates as his key went in the door ! Mother didn't work though !

USAUKMum · 24/03/2007 14:06

DD(6) & DS(2.8)

  1. Both have a snack when we get home from school run (3:30ish).

2&3.We all eat together at 6:30, lucky DH works only 30min commute and is home by 6:15.

4.We all eat the same meal, but DC may have it presented in differnt way (e.g. rice next chicken instead of chicken on top of rice). When we have a veggie meal or prawns then DC get fish fingers or sausages to go with the meal.

  1. No, they go to bed not long after dinner (7:30 for DS & 8 for DD) so are not hungry
NorksBride · 24/03/2007 14:10

1 - Snack - crackers/toast/fruit or biscuits

2 - Between 5.30 and 6.00pm.

3 - We eat with the DCs (it's a bit early but I prefer that to after 8pm)

4 - We eat the same meals.

5 - No supper. 5yo has water in her bedroom but she has the bladder to cope.

The DCs are aged 2, 3 & 5 btw.

saadia · 24/03/2007 14:11
  1. Kids have milk and fruit and "something sugary" - biscuit, cake or chocolate buttons on arriving home at about 3.45pm
  1. Kids eat at around 6pn
  1. I eat with kids, dh when he gets home any time between 7.30 and 9.
  1. Usually we all eat the same meal
  1. Kids don't have supper.
Spaghettisauce · 24/03/2007 14:16

1 - Do you give your children a snack when they get home from school or do you cook tea straight away?
They have a snack

2 - What time (roughly) do your kids have their evening meal?
About 7pm.

3 - Do you and your DP/DH eat with children or later?
With them, unless DH comes home late, then I eat with the kids if I'm really hungry and with DH if I can wait.

4 - Do you all eat the same meal or do you make seperate dishes for children and adults?
We all eat the same.

5 - Do your children have "supper" (ie milk and biscuit) before they get into bed?
No, they go to bed shortly after dinner anyway.

ambercat · 24/03/2007 14:17

1 - no, snack ,cook tea early

2- 4.30-5pm

3- dh away alot so tend to eat with kids then have a bowl of cerial later when their in bed.

4- only one meal cooked in this house!

5- milk and sometimes fruit

fortyplus · 24/03/2007 14:23

My 2 are 11 & 13 but the routine has never varied much - apart from bedtime.

1 - Do you give your children a snack when they get home from school or do you cook tea straight away? - Only give a snack if they're straight out to play sport. They always have a big drink as they never drink enough at school.

2 - What time (roughly) do your kids have their evening meal? Depends on evening activities - any time between 5 and 7pm

3 - Do you and your DP/DH eat with children or later? Usually with them

4 - Do you all eat the same meal or do you make seperate dishes for children and adults? Usually the same

5 - Do your children have "supper" (ie milk and biscuit) before they get into bed? No - biscuits too sugary to give at bedtime imo.

lapsedrunner · 24/03/2007 14:24

DS is 4.5 and finishes Kindergarten at 14:30.

1 - A snack, usually bread based.
2 - 5pm

5 - An apple before bed

mumlove · 24/03/2007 14:41

Mercy · 24/03/2007 14:53

For those of you whose children go to bed soon after dinner, what do you do about baths and stories?

I'm a SAHM and I find the hours between getting home from school and bedtime just seem to race by. I'd be terrible as a WOHM

NuttyMuffins · 24/03/2007 14:56

1 - Yes, usually fruit or a peice of cake.

2 - 5:30ish

3 - I normally do yes.

4 - Almost always the same.

5 - They always have milk or hot choc, and sometimes a biscuit or half a pecie of toast.

purpleturtleegg · 24/03/2007 15:25

Mercy, we all eat together at 5.30, then go up shortly after 6 for a quick bath, downstairs for milk and story, then up to bed by 7.

Dh does most of the bath/bed routine for dd (5) and ds1 (4) if he's in, while I handle baby ds2. If dh is at work then bathtime is a fairly hands-off business for the older two, while I sort out ds2.

We don't have a bath every night, we tend to baths earlier before dinner (both DC had severe bath phobias when little, so never got into the routine). We go upstairs at 7:15 for DS, pjs, teeth & stories finished by 7:30-7:40, meanwhile, DH does reading with DD downstairs, then up for teeth, pjs & stories done at 8pm.

nikkie · 24/03/2007 20:19
