Can't believe I've never tried this before! It's lovely and doesn't taste dairy free (it's the creamy garlic and herb). What vegan foods do you all love Smile

Pesto is very easy to throw together if you have a good food processor, and you can get creative with what you put in - something green, some nuts, bit of oil, nutritional yeast, add in whatever else you fancy. Perhaps a little bit of tofu if you want a creamier pesto. My favourite one I have done so far has been a roasted tomato & aubergine one (basil, pine nuts & walnuts, roasted tomatoes & aubergines & the oil from the roasting pan, some nooch. Yum).

Buying greens in quantity can get expensive - I grew a lot of herbs last summer, this year I hope to grow a lot more greens and veg as well.

The Sainsbury's free from cheese Wensleydale with cranberry style Is Not Good Envy (

FishlessCake · 02/02/2017 14:03

I've just bought sheese sweet chilli which is lovely, not as nice as the garlic and herb but still good. Also got tofurky Italian sausage and polish style sausage. Also artisan grains veg and cashew nut roast.

Just remembered something else, Iceland croquettes Blush are suitable. All other brands have dairy, also goodfellas sweet pizza things the apple one is suitable (haven't tried it).

Thank you so much for this! Sporadically try veganism, this has inspired me to have another go.

FishlessCake · 03/02/2017 08:21

@Fieldandgrasses that's brilliant Grin and good luck. After a month I found it was easy.

Can definitely recomend the tofurkey Italian sausages, had them in a baguette with caramelised onions and salsa.

Nutcrafter nut cheeses are excellent (and I'm pretty sure soya/gluten free) but not sure how easy they are to get outside vegan fairs/ festivals (they sell them in my local health food shop but that's because they are made locally). They are also expensive at £8-£11 but the black ash is absolutely to die for, everyone I know who has tried it go nuts for it (no pun intended!)

Also locally we have sgaia mheats which are seitan based burgers and steaks and are fab.

Drinking alpro chocolate soya milk just now which is a lovely treat :)

Vegan Supermarket Finds (UK) group on Facebook is good for finding accidentally vegan stuff.

The Free From cornetto cones in Tesco are lovely. Also from Tesco I like the caramel chocolates (made by choices). for sweets goody good stuff do nice cola bottles etc.

Not sure if everyone knows this but the cheese in Tesco/ Sainsbury's is made by sheese so if you don't like one you won't like the other. For my part I don't like cheddar sheese or plain cheddar spread at all but I like the Wensleydale with cranberries, the Greek style and I love the sweet chilli spread. Sheese usually give out loads of free samples at vegan festivals so a good place to try out the different kinds.

I get the vegan kind box too and I love that every month I get to try a few new vegan goodies. Some of my favourite have been ten acre cheese and onion crisps and these little microwave cakes where you just add vegan marg and water.

Raspberry ruffles are good too. I'm a huge crisp addict and love walkers prawn cocktail and salt and vinegar, bacon crispies from coop, Texas bbq pringles, skips, sweet chilli sun bites- lots out there as well as the fail safe ready salted.

Sorry got a bit excited there :) vegan for 8 years love finding new products (and I do eat a very whole foods, fruit and veg based diet but the occasional processed treats are fun!)

FishlessCake · 03/02/2017 14:23

Forgot about raspberry ripple Smile they are lovely. Thanks kiki. The last vegan fayre I went to I ended up spending a small fortune, I felt so greedy afterwards I must have eaten about 5 different cakes Blush

That's good to know about Tesco/Sainsbos cheese being the same as scheese, thanks kiki. Can't believe you like the Wensleydale and Cranberry style! I honesty almost bought it back up. I really love dairy Wensleydale & Cranberry though. Perhaps if you're further removed from the 'real' thing your taste buds are more accepting!

I made a vegan 'Parmesan' last night grinding cashews with nooch to go on top of my pasta, worked really well, will def do that again. The milling attachment on my nutribullet made short work of it.

After you mentioned vegan kind box I did some googling and found a similar company that does a gluten free version, vegan tuck box, so have ordered one to try. Thanks for the inspiration!

FishlessCake · 03/02/2017 20:36

Search good Carma foods, they make a vegan Parmesan. It's really nice but very expensive as all that's in it is ground almonds, nutritional yeast plus either basil/garlic/chilli. Very simple to make.
I heard that about tesco too, but don't find their soft cheese spread tastes like sheese. What it does taste just like though is the filling in those tuc sandwiches Grin which is very tasty!

I like Cheezly Mozzarella and Cheezly soy-free Cheddar, and the Redwood Christmas selection packs of special flavours. Not keen on Sheese at all though.

Grindelwaldswand · 03/02/2017 21:22

Alpro Vanilla Ice cream and Koko milk i Found violife to be quite sickly and not cheesy at all then again i used to love extra strong cheddar before i went DF so nothing replicates it for me

FishlessCake · 03/02/2017 21:46

Someone told me to leave it aslong as possible before trying vegan cheese. I waited about 4mnths but my cheese eating wasn't a thing other than cheddar/Philadelphia and processed cheese slices (grilled on toast) Blush

kikisparks · 03/02/2017 23:41

I get what you mean about the vegan festivals Fishless, I never spend less than £100 and it mostly seems to go on cakes! Blush Phoenix, hope you enjoy your tuck box! I absolutely loved cheese as a veggie and didn't like cheese alternatives when I first went vegan but 8 years on I think my tastebuds have changed Grin

PhoenixJasmine · 04/02/2017 05:16

I guess it's like gluten free stuff - it's almost always easier/nicer to make food that is naturally gluten free, OR homemade gluten free versions from scratch, than shop-bought processed gluten free stuff.

FishlessCake · 04/02/2017 12:31

I'm trying my nut roast for dinner today, it's cooking now and smells amazing but it's only small and the whole thing is about 1000cals (I'm guessing all the nuts).

OP posts:
FishlessCake · 04/02/2017 19:50

Well that nutroast was so tasty. I ate half Blush but with lots of veg so not so bad.

If the calories were mostly nuts then it's good fats! That's what I tell myself anyway Grin

Today has mostly been basic ingredients/scratch cooking, but I used some BFree quinoa&chia wraps (the only brand I've found both vegan and gluten free) cut into strips and then baked in the oven for around 8 mins to crisp them up and use them to dip/scoop into some homemade hummus, guacamole and salsa for lunch (along with some veg crudités). Worked very well and will def be making them again. Not sure what to call them - I guess they're kinda tortilla chips!?!

FishlessCake · 04/02/2017 21:11

Wow those found lovely Phoenix have never heard of those wraps before

OP posts:
PhoenixJasmine · 04/02/2017 21:16

Obligatory boasty pic then Grin

I bulk ordered bread, bagels, wraps and pittas from BFree online. None of the other gluten free brands I used to buy are vegan.

Sheese and other great vegan foods
FishlessCake · 05/02/2017 02:30

What a feast! Looks lovely and not boasty at all, vegan food porn Wink

Stilllivinginazoo · 06/02/2017 10:48

I agree fishcake that's not a boasty pic.looks very very yummy wishes technology was such I could eat it from a picture

FishlessCake · 06/02/2017 12:09

Well I urge you all to try the tofurkey polish style sausages. They are the nicest vegan sausage I've tried Smile

OP posts:
PhoenixJasmine · 06/02/2017 18:41

All the best vegan sausages are gluten based :(

OrchidaceousRose · 06/02/2017 19:07

Violife cheeses were a bit meh until DH hit on idea of cutting thick slices and frying them halloumi style- makes a crusty edge and oozy middle.

Coconut collaborative chocolate pots, coyo yoghurts especially salted caramel, fry's chocolate creams, Amy's Mac n Cheeze, koko milk, koko strawberry yoghurts.

Also recently discovered adding cubed celeriac to a tomato pasta sauce, simmer til celeriac is soft then blitz- makes a very "creamy" sauce.
