Your absolute favourite slow cooker recipe?

Now that autumn has landed I've dusted off the slow cooker. I'm using it about three times a week, but my repertoire is fairly limited. I'm not an extravagant cook by any means.

I've done tagines, casseroles, beef roasts and a curry but looking for more inspiration.

Please can you share your favourite fool-proof slow cooker recipes? Thanks Smile

Things disappear from chat, that's probably why moving it came up. You don't want to lose awesome ideas!

bruffin · 18/10/2016 23:18

this Hairy bikers sausage caserole works well in slow cooker but if using tinned beans dont put them until nearer end.

mymilkshakes00 · 18/10/2016 23:25

Mmmmmmm. Chicken tagine. Yummy.

BlancheBlue · 18/10/2016 23:45

Isn't the cooking specific section for real experts not beginners (like me!) Wink

StrawberryLime · 19/10/2016 00:13

Vegetarian sausage and lentil casserole. Although you could obviously substitute with meat ones!
Sliced sausages, lentils, chopped onions, chopped mushrooms, tin chopped tomatoes, baked beans, and some vegetable stock as well to absorb into the lentils and bulk them up.
I put it all on low for approx. 7 hours.
Yum! Always gets totally eaten up by everyone in this house and that's a nigh on impossible job usually as someone or other usually complains at something! fussy gits

clippityclop · 19/10/2016 00:21

Marking my place. Need to use my slow cooker again.

Very tender and very cheap: turkey drumstick. Costs about £1.60 and feeds three people. Reminds me of Christmas! I do this for Sunday "roast" when I am going to be too busy to do a proper Sunday dinner on the day.

I've used several recipes for it, all good, but to get it very tender I cook it for longer than recommended, about 18 hours in total. Add the veg for the last 6-8 hours only.

You're meant to brown the drumstick on all sides in a frying pan before putting it into the slow cooker. To save myself effort and brown it very evenly, I deep fry it in the chip fryer for a few minutes instead.

The only awkward thing is that my slow cooker is a tiny bit too small to accommodate the drumstick - supermarket drumsticks all seem to be the same length, regardless how plump they are - so I must use a cleaver to break the end of the bone and fold it to fit in the slow cooker!

I made a veggie chilli today in mine and it's one thing that both the kids will actually eat! I use an Aldi's Passata as a base, add Quorn mince (pre fried in olive oil), garlic, onions, celery... Also make a lot of curries and this time of year a veggie stew (I'm a veggie - my kdis and husband aren't). Dumplings seem to do really well in the slow cooker!

Whatever I make, I usually start it off on the hob in a pan then when it's boiling, dump it in the slow cooker. Mine was a secondhand one my husband found abandoned in a cupboard at work and so I ever had a recipe book with it - just make things randomly.

A really easy tea is summat made in the slow cooker with an Aldi's cake mix made in the breadmaker for pudding!

I won't lose sleep over it, but posted in Chat deliberately. Those of us interested in cooking don't always reside in the cooking-specific topics.
Only thing with that though is that threads in chat go "poof" after so many days never to be seen again.
Moving it would mean people wanting slow cooker recipes would be able to find them all for years to come!
Shame to lose so many yummy recipes....

StrawberryLime · 19/10/2016 01:03

If anyone's on Facebook, there's a great group called Slow Cooked Wonders on there with tons of fab ideas if you're wanting extra inspiration!

StrawberryLime · 19/10/2016 01:07

Steak and mushroom pudding!

Wearegoingtobedlehem How do you make this please, sounds yummy!

Bababing1 · 19/10/2016 03:33

Placemarking

bullshift · 19/10/2016 09:40

As soon as I posted that, I realised it would go poof! from Chat.

Happy to have it moved, HQ, but still want people who don't visit the cooking section to be able to see it as there are so many super recipes on here now Grin

These all look fabulous! Marking my spot! Can you seriously do bolognaise and chilli in a slow cooker without frying the mince first?

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 19/10/2016 10:46

Joffrey when I use quorn mince in chilli or anything with the slow cooker, I just throw it in frozen. Tastes no different and saves time.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 19/10/2016 11:33

Love a slow cooker thread. Agree re skinless, boneless chicken thighs.

I often whip together this chicken stew thing:

8 chicken thighs
onion strips
pepper strips
stock cube
passata/chopped toms
herbs
paprika

That's it really. It's soooo flavoursome.

The only thing I find with slow cooker meals is that things reduce down so so much! That recipe ^^ could do 3 of us. I mean, it could do more, but if me and DH have a regular portion (cereal bowl), DS has some, then there's another portion for one lunch say, but that's it!

FrankiesKnuckle · 19/10/2016 12:42

Currently cooking this keema curry, smells gorgeous!

I sub beef mince for lamb mince and brown off first (that's the only pre cooking I do)
Also sub the 3 fresh tomatoes for a tin of chopped ones.
I'm using chick peas today instead of peas.
I use frozen chopped onions, lazy garlic and chili. Bung it all in for 7-8 hours.
Tastes even better the next day too.

Thanks, Sissy - you've saved me some time!

BlancheBlue · 19/10/2016 13:43

I started a thread in food but no help. Can anyone recommend a decent slow cooker?

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 19/10/2016 14:31

This lamb recipe is my family's slow-cooker fave:

8 lamb chops
1 chopped onion
1 440g tin chopped tomatoes
1-2 tsps paprika
1-2 tsps dried parsley
About 2 tbsps sour cream

Fry the chops for colour then put in the pot. Fry the onions until golden then chuck them on the top with the paprika, parsley and tomatoes. Cook on high for 4 hours, or low if you're out all day. Either works fine. At the end of cooking, stir in a good dollop of sour cream and let it heat through for 10 mins. Serve with boiled rice.

Hungry now Grin

KindergartenKop · 19/10/2016 16:00

Bacon, lentil and tomato soup.
Red and green lentils.
Tin of tomatoes.
3 rashers of bacon.

Very bacony given the amount in it.

RubyGoat · 19/10/2016 16:03

Any chance the thread could be moved shortly before it's due to go poof? I agree it will get more traffic here it's a shame to lose it later.

VanillaSugarandTeamPortia · 19/10/2016 16:07

Blanche I got mine for £25 from Aldi. It works fine.

bruffin · 19/10/2016 16:14

BlancheBlue
i have this slow cooker and love it I have had a few over the years but this one is my favorite by far. It can also be used on the hob and washes up really well. This is the 4.5ltr and i can get a whole chicken in it, but there is also a 6.5ltr version.
