Your absolute favourite slow cooker recipe?

bullshift · 17/10/2016 20:12

Now that autumn has landed I've dusted off the slow cooker. I'm using it about three times a week, but my repertoire is fairly limited. I'm not an extravagant cook by any means.

I've done tagines, casseroles, beef roasts and a curry but looking for more inspiration.

Please can you share your favourite fool-proof slow cooker recipes? Thanks Smile

Shamelessly place marking as all I make is chilli, casseroles and shepherds pie.

Thanks all, seriously tempted now...

Yawnyawnallday · 18/10/2016 18:07

[note taking] thanks for the tips all.

I need to use mine a few times next week due to working late. Great ideas, especially like that there is variation on stew/casserole/mince ideas. Thanks! X

I've currently got a lamb and lentil stew in mine. New recipe I got from here: www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/robin-miller/hearty-lamb-and-lentil-stew-recipe.html

Don't know what it's like yet but I used less herbs than it stated and I used lamb stock rather than chicken.

My winner so far though has been pulled pork. I use a Schwartz mix that you mix with tomato purée and sugar. Could probably make it from scratch but I'm not complicating a slow cooker dinner as the point of it as I don't need to think about anything. Just chuck it all in and go. I do thicken thensauce at the end though as the meat juice makes it watery.

Bloody hell, these all sound amazing. Excellent work.

I love this white bean chicken chili: www.budgetbytes.com/2015/01/slow-cooker-white-chicken-chili/

That website actually has a whole slow cooker section but the only other recipe I've tried is the black bean soup, which was also good.

Confusednotcom · 18/10/2016 18:52

Place marking! The Sara Lewis recipe books for slow cookers (hamlyn) are v good.
Loving the ribs ideas.

I've got a lentil and spinach daal in mine just now (just add the yoghurt in at the end) - cheap as anything and lasts for days. I chuck a few chickpeas in too, and anything that's lying about in the fridge. A Girl Called Jack linky

I do this for 9 hours in the slow cooker with a couple of thinly sliced red onions in the bottom of the pan-really delicious. You get lots of jerky gravy which freezes really well and makes a good addition to other dishes (it's great on roasted chicken thighs).

jimijack · 18/10/2016 19:54

Red lentils, tin beans, tin Tom's, chunky carrots, red onion, white onion, 2 veg stock cubes, paprika, water, any other veg going off in the bottom of the fridge, low for 6-8 hours.
Bloody lovely

PlaidMaid · 18/10/2016 20:23

Bodicea what size bottle of BBQ sauce for your super easy pulled chicken please?!

Nataleejah · 18/10/2016 20:27

Meat jelly.
2 pigs trotters, 1 chicken leg, garlic, carrot. Leave overnight. In the morning strip the meat and refridgerate. Serve with hot potatoes.

bullshift · 18/10/2016 20:48

I think I'll pass on the trotters Confused

I did gammon for the first time in mine today. ''Twas a complete revelation! I have never had gammon so tender... just bunged 1kg joint in, about 150ml water and left on low from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

Nataleejah · 18/10/2016 21:07

Gammon hock?

Enkopkaffetak · 18/10/2016 21:10

Chicken Chickpea and apricot Tagine A firm favourite in our family.

Lasagne. Make a Bolognese Sauce. Mix a tub of ricotta with 3/4 of a packet of grated mozzarella.

Layer sauce, Lasagne sheet, cheese, sauce, sheet, cheese, sauce.

Cook on low for 3-ish hours. Take lid off, sprinkle the rest of the mozzarella on and cook for another 30 minutes with the lid off.

Chelsea26 · 18/10/2016 21:19

blanche and everyone else
Seriously the most delicious easy chilli ever
Frozen chopped onions
Frozen chopped peppers
Beef mince
Jar of red (hot and sweet) jalapeños - liquid too
Pinch of thyme
2 x bovril/oxo cubes

Stick all in slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours.

Can use fresh veg of course but frozen makes it so easy.

We have chilli fries with this

So fries topped with the chilli and then cheese, raw red onion, extra jalapeños, sour cream and American mustard on top - so so good!

Roygrace · 18/10/2016 21:47

I made this and it went down a storm!

Any one mind if we move this out of chat? Thanks

bullshift · 18/10/2016 22:11

I won't lose sleep over it, but posted in Chat deliberately. Those of us interested in cooking don't always reside in the cooking-specific topics.

VanillaSugarandChristmasSpice · 18/10/2016 22:24

I didn't even know there was a cooking specific section! How can we make this permanent?
