I just got back from Cyprus and every morning I had it for breakfast- grilled halloumi, grilled ham, mushrooms, scrambled egg in a grilled pitta. Blooming delicious! Tastes so good grilled in a salad with figs and pomegranate... drools

I am pregnant and am now daydreaming about halloumi... Grin

CaptainWarbeck · 12/07/2016 08:49

Aaah under that sounds delicious

SuburbanRhonda · 12/07/2016 08:57

Fry bacon. Remove from pan then fry halloumi in bacon fat.

Sounds like a year's intake of salt in one meal Grin

I've seen recipes that say it can replace paneer. No no no! Paneer works because it's flavourless and absorbs spices in Indian recipes. Extra salty cheese is definitely not what you need in a curry.

minipie · 12/07/2016 09:53

We fry it with a tiny bit of oil on a cast iron pan (non stick does NOT work)

The key is to eat the cheese as soon as possible after cooking - which is why it's often rubbish if you order in a pub or restaurant.

We fry up chopped peppers, tomatoes, pine nuts, parsley or mint, sometimes aubergine and mix it into cous cous. Then lay the fried halloumi on the cous cous. Yum.

It goes best with sweet flavours IMO to contrast with the salt.

bruffin · 12/07/2016 16:29

Just grill it, it doesnt need oil

CointreauVersial · 12/07/2016 21:23

Have just tried kungfuupanda's pasta sauce recipe - OMG, delicious!

DH and DCs loved it too, although I was a little heavy-handed with the chilli. It will make a very yummy change from the usual halloumi salad.

jennieflower · 12/07/2016 22:21

I can't be the only lazy arse that heats halloumi in the microwave, surely?

Obviuosly barbecuing is the way to serve it properly but I always keep a few chunks back when preparing kebabs to sneak in the microwave with a bit of oil and some smoked paprika to scoff whilst I'm preparing a barbecue

jennieflower · 12/07/2016 22:24

*obviously

orangina · 12/07/2016 22:28

Grate into spaghetti with chopped baby tomatoes, fresh basil and olive oil. Delicious.

[Can add a bit of bacon/pancetta to the mixture too....]

noiwontmoveover · 12/07/2016 22:33

A lot of people choose Houlloumi because they' think they're making a healthy choice.
but it's worth pointing out that regular Houlloumi is REALLY fattening.

Just because something sounds healthy doesn't mean it is.

noiwontmoveover · 12/07/2016 22:33

Halloumi.

NameChanger22 · 12/07/2016 23:04

Fry it and stick it in a tortilla wrap with lettuce and sweet chilli sauce.

But there are so many great ideas and links in this thread, Bengal'

  • you may love it just as it is but others might not appreciate the salty polystyrene-ness of the unadorned prodct.

How do we get it moved to food/recipes so that it doesn't disappear in a puff of smoke in 60 days? MNHQ.?

I can't believe this thread has gone so long before I've remembered my favourite thing to do with halloumi, which is a recreation of a Pret wrap.

Halloumi and falafel wrap with some pickle, roast veg (or those jar peppers), bit of salad maybe.

Have just tried kungfuupanda's pasta sauce recipe - OMG, delicious!

It's lovely, isn't it? Had it last night!

Igneococcus · 13/07/2016 08:21

The halloumi parcels fuzzyheaded posted earlier are dp's absolutely most favourite meal. They sound a bit strange at first but it all works amazingly well together.
I also make a fattoush-style salad, recipe was in a Sainsburys magazine a few years ago, I think. Mixed lettuce leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, pitas in pieces, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with sumac then toasted under a hot grill, pan-fried slices of halloumi and a dressing made with lemon juice, sumac, sweet chilli sauce and olive oil, delicious and very quick.

OliviaStabler · 13/07/2016 11:18

I tried the halloumi sliced, dipped in egg then semolina and fried. Amazing!

MadameDePompom · 13/07/2016 11:35

I've never heard of that before! Sounds amaaaazing. I'm sure there's some ancient semolina knocking around a cupboard somewhere.

Candyperfumegirl · 13/07/2016 13:01

We love halloumi in our house, we are veggies so it makes a good meat alternative.

Halloumi burgers

Halloumi skewers

Our fave is coating it harrisa paste or sumac then in grilling it. Serve alonside some falafel, stuffed vine leaves & a tabboulah salad. With hummus & pitta bread. Yum.

CeeBeeBee · 13/07/2016 13:17

We put fried strips of halloummi in fajitas with a tomato and vegetable sauce. Or with cous cous and roasted Mediterranean vegetables.

Dd loves the nacho cheese joke but it needs to be said in an American accent to really make her guffaw.

Paulat2112 · 13/07/2016 13:36

I had only tried halloumi once before and thought it was okay, but after reading this i got some yesterday.

Well for lunch yesterday i cooked a few really nice chicken goujons, fried up some slices of halloumi and put them in a lovely stonebaked roll along with some nandos garlic sauce, was amazing!!

Today i sliced up some more and just put some sweet chili sauce on it and ate it like that!

Was heaven!!
