Anyone used a nutribullet?

chestnut100 · 31/12/2014 16:34

Cutting out a loooong backstory, I've been advised a product like a nutribullet would be beneficial to a health condition my daughter and I share. These are apparently the best on the market but at about £100 are eyewateringly expensive for me to budget for. i dont know anyone personally who has used one, so I'm hoping some of you might be able to recommend(or not as the case may be)

Look forwards to any replies

I've got mine too - yet to try it out but plan to tomorrow. I do worry it's an expensive fad but I'm very guilty of toast / cereal bars and run for breakfast at present which isn't doing me any good.

Can you make and have the smoothies later - just wonder if they would survive a work commute. How about freezing them?

bluebump · 07/01/2015 18:25

I'm loving mine. I find adding a handful of oats helps bulk out a smoothie and helps fill me up. I'm having them for breakfast at the moment but may add a juice to my day too.

By the way those people looking for an offer, I got a voucher from the till in WHSmiths that was £30 off a £60 shop if you opened an account with VERY which brought mine down to £69. The voucher ran out on NYE otherwise I'd post it here but they may do another.

I can't eat banana or avocado. Would a nutribullet be a pointless purchase?

FelixFelix · 08/01/2015 20:04

You can use any fruit or vegetable you want in it. I just used mine to make cauliflower rice to go with my Thai curry tonight.

NotOnMyWatchOhNo · 08/01/2015 20:11

Is the recipe book that comes with it any good?

Morrigu · 08/01/2015 20:25

I was actually thinking of starting a thread about smoothie recipes so thanks for the ideas.

Just make sure you freeze fruit and veg that is approaching the end SaltySea, cuts down any wastage. I've frozen bags of kale, grapes and bananas today.

Favourite morning one of mine is spinach, coconut water, tiny bit of kale, grapefruit and ginger.
Had spinach, cucumber, avocado, lemon and frozen berries today. Strange colour but rather nice.
Love almond milk ones too and often chuck in some chia seeds.

Henbur1702 · 08/01/2015 20:47

Just marking thread for recipes! What are flower sprouts I do sprouting and mIcrogreens but never heard if glower sprouts??

Henbur1702 · 08/01/2015 20:47

Flower

14575 · 08/01/2015 21:29

Do you have to blanche the kale / spinach before freezing please?

14575 · 08/01/2015 21:31

Felixfelix I tried the cauliflower rice this eve but it didn't work?? I used the milling blade, should I have used the other one? Ended up getting magimix out. Confused

Morrigu · 08/01/2015 21:37

Nope no need to blanche at all, stick it straight in a sandwich bag and pop in the freezer.

chestnut100 · 08/01/2015 21:38

Henbur...flower sprouts are new to me too. Discovered them by chance in my local coop. I bought them and googled them back home. They are a new product, taken years to develop and are a cross between regular sprouts and kale. Very delicious!

14575 mine ended up proper blitzed! It's the first time I've used the nutribullet for cauli rice. I think it's too powerful. I tried both blades and it still came out slightly too mushy. I fried it in a pan though which reduced the liquid in it and it still came out quite nice.

Looseleaf · 08/01/2015 21:49

I'm so excited as had a week of Nutribullet smoothies at my parents' over the holidays and was starting to feel brilliant (after headaches which I think was detox-related!) and mine arrives tomorrow hopefully. Lakeland has them for £80 and free postage unless they've changed price since 3 days ago

Looseleaf · 08/01/2015 21:52

Does anyone have a recipe their children like that's still healthy? DS didn't like the kale / fruit mixes we were having. I'm thinking banana / avocado with other stuff might help but not sure what

Mrsstevejones · 09/01/2015 00:46

For my DD - 3, i do frozen spinach - 1 block, frozen strawberries - 4, frozen pineapple - 1 chunk and half an avocado, topped up with water. She only likes them watery, whilst i like them thick.

The strawberry and pineapple work really well together and the spinach taste doesnt really come through. The avocado makes it nice and filling.

I tried her with kale instead of spinach but they were yukky apparently!

SaltySeaBird · 09/01/2015 00:53

Thanks for the freezing advice Morrigu - what about freezing a made up smoothie so I can take it to work and it can defrost for lunchtime? Would that be daft. I'm not sure they would keep well enough otherwise.

didyouwritethe · 09/01/2015 01:04

Lakeland now sell them according to the new catalogue. So could maybe be got there when there's a voucher/offer around.

didyouwritethe · 09/01/2015 01:05

Sorry, I see the Lakeland point has been made.

How about a special deal with Lakeland then, eh, MNHQ?

Mrsstevejones · 09/01/2015 01:22

I know with juices you are supposed to put them in a glass jar and fill to the top so there isnt any contact with air -to preserve the goodness. I read (not sure if its true) that smoothies dont degrade as quickly. If you used loads of frozen stuff and make them like a slush puppy and then kept it cold in cold bag with an ice pack it would probably be nice and cold for lunch. Not sure about freezing however.

Could you not take it all with you? Or chop and pop in the cup and lug blender base to work and blitz there? Would be a faff.

Morrigu · 09/01/2015 07:04

I haven't frozen them myself Salty but I have read that you can if you need to transport, it'll just need a good mix once it has thawed out as it probably will separate. Worth a shot anyway?

Yeah I've read that too, fill to the top in a glass bottle, less area for it to oxidise although they do keep better than juices and things like lemon through it will preserve them better as the ascorbic acid is what is used to prevent fruit and veg from turning brown. Disclaimer, have no idea if all that is true Wink simply what I've read.

VenusRising · 09/01/2015 14:47

No, that lemon juice idea is right Morrigu Grin. If you squirt a bit of lemon juice on top of the smoothie, the acid stops it from oxidising.

I'm sure you could brim fill a small thermos with one, right up to the top and squirt some lemon on top and try and keep it upright.

Tbh, I think they're best drunk fresh, but if you use frozen ingredients and keep it in a insulated thermos travel mug with a squirt of lemon, it would be fine.

SaltySeaBird · 09/01/2015 16:13

Hmmm well I have about an hour and 20 minute commute which includes 10 minute drive, 50 minute train and then 20 minute walk with a steep hill - I'm not sure I could lug the base unit around - just carrying my shoes, purse and a book is enough as I'm normally running for the train as it is!

I might try a very frozen one and see how it fares though.

FelixFelix · 09/01/2015 16:20

DP takes his smoothie to work every morning. He has an hour commute either cycling or car if it's bad weather. He always has banana, oats, honey, yoghurt and milk and it seems to survive the journey.

Kelly1814 · 09/01/2015 16:28

I love mine and everything I put in is frozen..

Frozen spinach balls
Berries
Ginger (I slice and freeze it)

Best thing ever.
