Third thread of healthy eating, no calorie counting just good, healthy food for us and our families.

Sleep - raw apple. And actually, it wasn't even technically overnight oats (that would have required organisation Grin).

I used normal porridge instead of jumbo oats, because they soak really quickly. So... oats, milk, half a grated apple, cinnamon and a bit of nutmeg (I'm a big nutmeg fan!). Leave for 20 mins, then add a dollop of yoghurt and a swirl of maple syrup.

holmessweetholmes · 27/05/2015 08:38

Never eaten avocados Shortaris Shock. You've been missing out! I like them mashed or sliced on stuff, in a salad or made into guacamole. Will type out my super duper guac recipe if you're interested.

shortaris1 · 27/05/2015 14:26

Ooh Holmes I'd love that. I have eaten them with crisps as Guacamole, just never in a more healthy way! One came in my food shop today but it's as hard as the jobs of hell so I'll need to wait for it to ripen.

shortaris1 · 27/05/2015 14:27

Hobs of hell even

holmessweetholmes · 27/05/2015 15:34

Ok... 1 large ripe avocado (definitely no hobs of hell!), half a small onion roughly chopped, 1 crushed clove garlic, 2 tbsps Greek yoghurt, juice of half a lime, small bunch of fresh coriander, a bit of chopped red chilli or a splash of tabasco sauce, salt and black pepper.

Put all ingredients in food processor except a bit of the coriander which you can chop and sprinkle on after. Whizz until relatively smooth.

The yoghurt is my own addition to the usual ingredients. I find it makes for a nice creamy texture.

I like to serve my guacamole as a side dish with chilli con carne or Mexican chicken, or as an extra filling in burritos, or as a dip with tortillas obvs.

shortaris1 · 28/05/2015 07:32

Thanks Holmes. Once this thing is no longer suitable to use as a weapon I'll give that a go!

Bramshott · 28/05/2015 19:32

I love avocado. Rarely comes in our veg box though, so I have to make a concerted effort to remember to buy it (and then get reminded how expensive they are!)

Camping was good thanks, although still a bit of a meat-fest. Adopting a similar approach to this weekend when I am away with work. Packing a large quinoa salad, a couple of portions of sleep's smoked haddock dal, and a huge bunch of bananas!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 29/05/2015 15:37

HelloSmile

Well, I'm doing really well and have lost loads of weight, not through choice though Hmm

I read last week that taking turmeric tablets are a great anti inflammatory so got some and within 2 days I had the most raging heart burn ever that hasn't gone even though I stopped taking them. I felt the discomfort literally within an hour of taking the first capsule. I can't take anything like neurofen or codeine so I think this is a natural version and it's knocked me for six. I think it's left me with an inflamed osophegas (sp?) it's killed my appetite totally, so I'm eating but minuscule meals and drinking tons of water to try and neutralise the acid. I've read that taking antacids is counterproductive although I did take Gaviscon for a couple of days. It's not getting worse, I think I've just got to ride it out and wait for it to heal. Apples after meals definitely help - I think it works like taking Apple cider vinegar, which is too strong atm for me to take. I've started taking probiotics too which should help.

Dear God, I'm so cross with myself for taking them though, I should've known betterHmm

Anyway, how's everyone else doing? I've been up the allotment a couple of times and still managing to walk every day. My dad commented on my mobility and said I'm noticeably steadier and walking further- YayGrin

Aww - hope you are back to normal soon, Dame. I had a sort of similar thing recently. I saw some multivitamins reduced in the supermarket and bought them. I didn't notice they were actually multivitamins with minerals and therefore had iron in. I don't react well to iron supplements - they mess with my stomach. So I had several days of constipation and nausea before I realised, and then about a month of low -level stomach pain which has only just gone! Sometimes our efforts to be healthy backfire, don't they!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/05/2015 14:40

Oh Holmes, poor you! Glad it's settled down now. I had a dreadful evening and after much googling have decided not to take antacids as it's counterproductive apparently. So, mega doses of pro biotics and glass of cider vengeance in water with meals plus shed loads of ginger and ginger tea plus chewing gum for 20 mins after each meal. So far, I'm much better today. No wonder people mistake heartburn for heart attacks, it's awful!

Food today - banana, yog, probiotics, bananas and almonds. Lunch was steamed cod, brown rice and spinach with chopped celery.

Had a near miss with some smoked haddock as I didn't realise it was dyed with turmeric! Good job mum pointed it out , so ds had it and I had cod instead.

I'm exhausted, it's been such a difficult week as I've felt so awful but fingers crossed it's on the turn now.

Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better, Dame. Hope it's all sorted quickly.

I'm a bit down because I'm supposed to be doing my first half marathon on Sunday, but have come down with a cold which has turned into a horrible hacking cough. I haven't run for over a week now and I really shouldn't attempt the HM unless I am feeling 100%, which is pretty unlikely. I was going to find it hard enough even on tip - top form, so I fear I'm going to have to pull out. Sad I wouldn't mind so much but it will be the 3rd time I've entered myself for one and had tw pull out.

After getting myself pretty fit again over the last couple of months (although still heavier than I'd been for the previous year) it feels like a bit of a blow. Feeling generally run-down - bad skin, lethargic. Bleurgh.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/06/2015 11:37

Oh Holmes, what a shame, I am sorry but you're right you shouldn't attempt when feeling so roughSadThanks

I'm gradually feeling better, but my goodness it upset me so much! Rooibos tea seems to be helping loads, small meals and chewing gum after eating.

Just walked 2 miles, was raining and blustery but felt lovelySmile

Neeko · 02/06/2015 20:04

Sorry to hear that Holmes. Take care of yourself.

shortaris1 · 03/06/2015 09:39

Ah that's rough Holmes. Hope you feel better soon.

Loving the kitchen in my new house and have made some great stuff from Jamie's 15 minute meals over the last week. Just halved the quantities and had leftovers 2 nights later to make them work for 1 person! Love finding all the ingredients too, first time trying bulghur wheat and preserved lemon! I know, I'm easily pleased Grin

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2015 10:35

Thanks for the sympathy, folks. In the absence of running for the moment, I'm trying to focus on good, nourishing food instead. Although I've been getting fitter with all the running, I've been using that as a bit of an excuse to inhale biscuits etc! Feeling a bit large around the middle!

So, trying to go for 3 healthy meals a day with no snacking unless I'm desperate, in which case a bit of celery and peanut butter or a couple of slices of apple.

Shortaris - that all sounds good. What's your new kitchen like? . I've got a rather old and vaguely farmhouse-style pine kitchen in my new house. It's not exactly fashionable these days and I wouldn't have chosen that style but actually I really like it. Partly because it's square, with lots of cupboard space and a breakfast bar. But it's definitely homely rather than cheffy!

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2015 10:39

Oh I meant to say - read about Vietnamese rolls on another thread the other day and really want to make them. They sound like a fresher (not fried) and healthier version of spring rolls. I just need to find somewhere that sells spring roll wrappers / rice paper rounds. Anyone made them?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 03/06/2015 12:17

Yes, Tesco do Vietnamese roll kits,I have one in my cupboard but not tried it yet.

I love Vietnamese food, I used to go to a fantastic cafe in Deptford when I lived in London , brilliant place, used to be the only non Vietnamese person thereGrin

I've just bought some Manuka honey for my stomach. There was some in waitrose that was 33 quid a jarShockShockShockShockShockShock I didn't get anyGrin

holmessweetholmes · 03/06/2015 12:19

Cool! I don't think my Tesco does those though. Might have to find an oriental food shop. I've never been to a Vietnamese restaurant actually - wonder if there's one near here...

Bramshott · 04/06/2015 21:44

We tried Vietnamese rolls once but they were difficult to keep warm and cold they were bleurghhh!

Venison steaks with new potatoes tonight - I love venison! Going to read my Hugh's Light and Easy for ideas for the weekend.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/06/2015 22:46

We had a whole chicken in the slow cooker and gravy made with the juices, sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, cauli and broccoli.

Feel loads better today but still being very careful with what I eat. Had porridge for breakfast and boiled eggs and salad for lunch. Plus cider vinegar and honeyGrin

New house kitchen is not that exciting really Holmes, pale wood cupboards and granite/faux granite worktops but it's the first place I've owned so I'm loving organising it.

Made lots of use of Amazon to buy extra shelving, baskets etc as the cupboards go round corners IYSWIM and there's a fair bit of space that's hard to reach. Especially with short arms!

Made your guacamole the other day when bloody avocado finally ripened!

Glad you're feeling better Dame, that sounds awful!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/06/2015 14:12

Oh short, your kitchen sounds fab! Feeling a bit better each day, if I get hungry it seems to come back so I'm being very careful to eat regularly. Had a huge craving for roe on toast so popped into waitrose to get some, yum!Smile Left over chicken for dinner tonight and Dh and ds are having pizza.

stilllearnin · 05/06/2015 19:37

Hello! Glad you are getting there dame. How is the walking. holmes sorry your HM plans have been postponed. You will get there and soon.

I went to the dentist (which I love btw) and popped into waitrose for the first time ever! Stocked up on sumac Smile

Feeling really low still interspersed with euphoria! Eating has been...variable!
