Third thread of healthy eating, no calorie counting just good, healthy food for us and our families.

I'm finding the healthy eating tough atm too Fuzzpig. The in-Limbo state of moving house isn't very conducive to good habits and routine. I just had a lovely big salad with roast butternut squash and pumpkin seeds for lunch though - delicious!

Sleepwhenidie · 03/10/2014 13:54

Fuzz - sorry you have been feeling rough. Be kind to yourself, it sounds like you are doing a great job - love the disguised fish strategy Grin! holmes you too. Try and remember that its normal for life and our way of eating to work in phases, sometimes we are super-virtuous and in a cleansing phase, sometimes we are in a maintenance phase and sometimes it all goes a little awry and we can't/don't take the best care and attention but it will pass too Smile. All normal.

I got the HFW book and tried the satay style roast chicken and also roast sprouts with lentils and walnuts. I wasn't bowled over by the chicken, think I prefer basic garlic and lemon tbh. Sprouts were nice though, my DH adores sprouts weirdo so was a big fan. Can't see the DC's going for it anytime soon however Grin. Some fantastic looking recipes in there.

stilllearnin · 03/10/2014 16:16

Sleep I can confirm your DH is a weirdo as sprouts are not even food but clearly some kind of waste product. I have similar thoughts about fish (who thought that was an appetising looking creature) Smile

Fuzz as you say you are doing better so just concentrate on that. The sugar trap must be a nightmare with ME. My teeth have seen off my sugar consumption (I am serious) - it is just too painful!

I know life gets in the way but I just cannot understand how I so completely got mIndfull eating 2 weeks ago and now it's like I've never heard of it? We were at a festival at the weekend so late nights and beer, and then I went straight to working away, then straight to a funeral...but I've been back at home 2 days and I really cannot see why I shouldn't eat salad wraps all day long with the occasional samosa and bottle of beer? Looking to reboot some creative cooking as soon as I get some headspace.

holmessweetholmes · 03/10/2014 16:50

I'm afraid I'm another sprout-loving weirdo Grin. I am fortunate in that I love all vegetables. Oh... except okra, which is a slimy abomination.

Cantdothisagain · 03/10/2014 19:56

Sprout lover here too. I like all veg except okra which I like you Holmes despise!

I'm fussy about fruit though...

shortaris1 · 03/10/2014 20:51

Sprouts...eek!

I'm not a fruit fan really can't

LOVE veg though.

holmessweetholmes · 03/10/2014 22:57

I like all fruit too. I just wish I didn't like chocolate and cake so muchGrin . I didn't really have a sweet tooth before I had the dc. Now I can't really have chocolate in the house as I can't leave it alone! And the whole 'one square of dark chocolate after dinner' thing just doesn't appeal - I'm a milk chocolate fan. Also, rather dangerously, I am moving just down the road from Cartmel - the original home of sticky toffee pudding. They sell it everywhere round there!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 04/10/2014 18:29

Oh god I miss veg, crunchy chewy vegetables. Stupid braces

Cantdothisagain · 04/10/2014 20:19

Have any of you tried avocado mayo? In this months Waitrose mag - recipe is turkey burgers in whole grain buns with sweet potato chips and avocado mayo - my dinner - it's amazing...

shortaris1 · 05/10/2014 22:50

I haven't but it sounds lush can't

Hope you're doing okay fuzz It's a horrible thing isn't it?

Meal plan done for the next week and all pretty good barring a takeaway with a friend on Wednesday. It's good to be organised!

holmessweetholmes · 05/10/2014 23:09

Mmm - lovely roast chicken and salad for lunch today! Freezer is nearly empty now. Four sleeps until the big move ! The evening we move in may well have to involve pub grub or a trip to the local chippy as we'll be without any of our stuff until the following day, but after that I am looking forward to finding some lovely local produce!

stilllearnin · 06/10/2014 07:13

Holmes- how exciting!! I've had a nasty bug which saw me collapsing (it's my new response to anything!). Work is massive at the minute and I'm also going out more (which is fun!) so it's all been a bit hectic. So my priority this week is meal planning. My folks come back from France this week which means smelly cheese and French patisserie cakes for me Grin

holmessweetholmes · 06/10/2014 07:56

Mmm - smelly cheese!

Cantdothisagain · 06/10/2014 10:56

Mmm to smelly cheese! Collapsing doesn't sound good though. I hope you are ok.

Good luck Holmes! Exciting times.

holmessweetholmes · 06/10/2014 11:14

Eek - thanks folks!

Notmaisieinmorningside · 06/10/2014 15:54

Good luck with the move Holmes

Still I had a bout of collapsing at the beginning of the year and it was horrible, hope you get better soon. Patisserie and cheese should help in the meantime though...

holmessweetholmes · 06/10/2014 22:07

Collapsing sounds a bit scary, Notmaisie and Still. Hope you are feeling better now!

stilllearnin · 06/10/2014 23:17

I am fine. I was told I'd probably had mini strokes last year but the neurologist wasn't concerned enough to do a scan. Apparently once you faint for any reason, you're more likely to do it again. Personally, I'm not in favour of it but my body has other ideas. I do like the idea that cake and cheese might be midicinal thoughGrin

I've had to get food on the run recently and in boots and sainsbury I've found hard boiled eggs in the sandwich section. In boots it was in a little tub with a tiny amount of spinach - what?? So my question is, is there an egg thing going on that I don't know about? Some kind of celebrity diet?

stilllearnin · 06/10/2014 23:23

My word - what is up with my spelling?! I've been fighting technology all day- time for bedSmile

Bramshott · 07/10/2014 10:21

Sorry to hear about the fainting! Good luck with the move holmes.

Right - I am away every weekend from 17 Oct to 9 Nov and am DETERMINED to stay healthy this year!! So this weekend is all about the batch cooking and meal planning.... I was thinking of:

Bananas
Flapjacks with extra fruit & nuts
Couscous with sesame seeds, pine nuts and tuna for lunches
A big batch of that dal with sweet potato and smoked haddock

I have also bought some chicken livers, thinking that keeping my iron levels up has got to me good, but am not quite sure what to do with them. Some sort of stew I guess (or could make a chicken liver pate). Does anyone have any good liver recipes?

Any other ideas for things I can batch cook in advance which will pack a nutritional punch but not be too difficult to digest on the run?!

AmericasTorturedBrow · 07/10/2014 17:19

Oooh Bramshott you must use the chicken livers for Jamie's Down'n'Dirty Cajun Rice, it's awesome. I cook the livers down so they resemble mince and the DC gobble it up. I make up a huge batch minus the rice, add rice to the amount we'll eat fresh then freeze the rest and add rice when later defrosted and cooked

Sleepwhenidie · 07/10/2014 22:14

That rice sounds good Americas! How are you doing? Training going well?

Fainting not good Still!

I made HFW lamb curry tonight (didn't have time to soak cashews to make cashew cream so used coconut milk), it was delicious-more heat in curry needed next time though. Served with cauliflower rice pilaf from Hemsley Hemsley, first time I've tried it and it was fab.

Neeko · 08/10/2014 07:51

Holmes. Good luck with the move. Exciting times Smile

Still. Sorry to hear about the fainting. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon.

Bramshot. Where are you going all those weekends?

Americas. I bet that tastes lovely.

Very up and down here this week. Stressful and extremely busy day yesterday which resulted in a McDonald's for tea as I wasn't prepared. Sadly, they don't even taste nice any more Shock. No such nonsense today.
Managed my longest running distance of 3.56 miles on Saturday. Hoping to gradually increase it so I can do a 10k in the spring.

Bramshott · 08/10/2014 09:12

Ooh, that rice idea sounds really good Americas. Do you have the recipe by any chance - I can't find it online (obviously too new!).

I am off to Brighton every weekend because that's where the Festival I work on is (it's a classical festival). I am clinging to the fact that in just a month it will all be done for another year!

stilllearnin · 08/10/2014 21:23

That sound lovely Bramshott, but I fully appreciate it is really hard work and exhausting.

Neeko - I've never had McD's (i can eat you under the table on the pizza front). Do you mean that it doesn't taste nice because you taste food differently or is it a recipe change Smile
