And, if so, how often? what kind of steak? and do your dc enjoy it?

IdaClair · 30/04/2014 20:53

Yes. About once a fortnight or so. Rump or sirloin. DCs enjoy it very much and like it rare.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 30/04/2014 20:53

Not often no, mostly because I haven't got decent pans. Dc love it, as do I actually. I really need to get a good girdle pan or steak frying pan or what ever it is you cook a decent steak on.

PetiteRaleuse · 30/04/2014 20:53

Yes, about once a fortnight. Usually with chips or sauteed potatoes. Sometimes if am feeling like it will do a red wine or shallot sauce. I'm not sure which cut it would be in English though - I use several cuts depending on what's on offer. The kids do enjoy it but they are none fussy toddlers.

AryaOfHouseSnark · 30/04/2014 20:54

Oh and sirloin usually. I like fillet too, but wouldn't have a Clue how to cook it nicely.

TippiShagpile · 30/04/2014 20:54

Yes - dc love fillet steak (as do I). Once every couple of weeks.

Slongette · 30/04/2014 20:54

I've just had a nice rump steak - DS is too young and DH works away during the week so it was a little treat to myself.

I'd say we/I have it about once a week.... Depending on how flush I'm feeling! The bit of rump was about £3 from waitrose.

SpiderRoaster · 30/04/2014 20:55

Yes.

Once or twice a month would be more but isn't great for you!

Rib eye steak is more tender and is DPs preferred choice, I like a sirloin. Has to be with homemade peppercorn sauce.

Dd (2.5) isn't much fussed for it really, she doesn't really enjoy meat in general but she likes the peppercorn sauce.

The key to cooking a good steak is to have a hot plate to let it rest on after you've cooked it. I tend to fry mine, really hot pan, little olive oil on the steak, not the pan, then cook 3-4 min each side for m-w. Rest on hot plate whilst you do sauce in pan.

EyelinerQueen · 30/04/2014 20:55

Oooh yes.

Ribeye - the proper aged stuff from a fab farm shop. DP is the steak chef. He has a designated griddle pan.

He does a wee fillet for 5 year old DD which she loves and insists on having it medium rare Grin .

FriendlyFeatures · 30/04/2014 20:55

Yes, sirloin, every couple of weeks dd loves it

AryaOfHouseSnark · 30/04/2014 20:57

How do you make your peppercorn sauce Spider ?

Slongette · 30/04/2014 20:58

When you cook it make sure it's at room temperature then you don't have to cook it forever and risk over cooking!

nilbyname · 30/04/2014 20:59

Yes, 1/week.

Rump is what we like to eat from our local award winning butcher.

Generously seasons and rubbed with a little oil, I cook it on the LeCrueset griddle pan for 2/3mins on either side and then let it rest for 15minutes wrapped in tin foil next to the stove.

Serve with either stilton stuffed mushrooms or home made peppercorn sauce, chips and sautéed spinach. Tarragon mustard for the Mr.

catinbootz · 30/04/2014 21:03

I can't cook steak I always ruin it

EBearhug · 30/04/2014 21:05

Yes. I had fillet steak on Monday as a birthday treat to myself, and it was beautiful, almost melting in the mouth. Medium rare, with a creamy pepper sauce.

It was always my sister's birthday dinner of choice, less so mine, but I did fancy it this time.

Lunaballoon · 30/04/2014 21:05

Probably about one a month. Fillet for a special treat, followed by sirloin or skirt. As others have said, the key is to let it rest for a bit before serving.

CalamitouslyWrong · 30/04/2014 21:07

No. DH is a weirdo who won't eat it (he's horribly fussy) so I never cook it.

itiswhatitiswhatitis · 30/04/2014 21:08

Probably only have it 4/5 times year. Prefer rib eye 2 minutes either side in griddle pan, sometimes make a Roquefort sauce to go with it

SilasGreenback · 30/04/2014 21:09

Yes once or twice a month. Ribeye or fillet medium rare/rare. Usually cook it on gas BBQ unless weather is truly awful.

ncjustbecause · 30/04/2014 21:11

super-thin sirloin, cooked one min each side, served with horseradish sauce . both dc love steak.

Oblomov · 30/04/2014 21:14

Ribeye. With home made chips and Boursin filled mushrooms. On the grill. With grain mustard. Ds1 loves tasting quite a lot of daddy's!!

PaperPomPom · 30/04/2014 21:16

We have it once a fortnight or so. I pan cook it, rump or sirloin. A couple of weeks ago I went all 1980s and did steak Diane, which was great.

CointreauVersial · 30/04/2014 21:19

I do sometimes, but it's quite pricy, with three DCs with adult-sized appetites.

Also DH has a phobia of gristle/fat, and spends half the time poncing about cutting tiny bits off, or spitting bits out (regardless of how tender/beautifully cooked the steak), and I get cross with all the waste and moaning.

I generally cook sirloin or fillet. Steak at room temp, coat with oil, hot pan, leave to rest, yada yada. No sauce needed.

Mintyy · 30/04/2014 21:27

I've just cooked some tonight. My dc both like it. We had extra matured sirloin, cut thick, with chips, mixed salad and creamy horseradish.

Last time I cooked steak at home was for ds's birthday treat (7 months ago) so I'm now feeling a bit mean when I see you lot having it a couple of times a month.

OP posts:
JuniperTisane · 30/04/2014 21:28

Yes. Well, DH does, usually sirloin. He considers himself an expert and I have to agree he does it very well.

I would like to think the DSs do like it but unfortunately they never get to find out because they are only little and we save good steak for when they are out of the way Smile

neversleepagain · 30/04/2014 21:39

Two or three times a month, rib eye. DP likes his medium rare, I have mine rare and our 19 month old twins love rare steak too!
