And, if so, how often? what kind of steak? and do your dc enjoy it?

Rarely, maybe once or twice a year, simply can't afford it. However both dc are complete carnivores and would adore a beautiful piece of steak cooked exceptionally well I'm sure. Probably medium in terms of done-ness I'm guessing.

Never cook steak at home and very rarely order it in a restaurant.

DD drifts in and out of vegetarianism and neither myself or DH are that bother.

DS would probably love it though as he's a bit of a meat monster at heart Grin

Bothered not bother!

We do, but not very frequently, as it's so expensive (we only buy organic meat, and steak is about £35 per kilo).
I wish we had a proper griddle pan to do it in though- would be so much lovelier.
I like it with beurre de Paris.

I can still taste a steak I had years ago- was the tastiest thing I've ever eaten, at a restaurant in Uffington, where the white horse is.

Rib-eye is the best IMO. For anyone eating a lot of steak, like me, because of low carbing, I have found Aldi steak cheap but pretty nice and often delicious (though not as nice as the super luxury stuff).

Ribeye here too, room temp, hot pan then rest in foil as someone upthread said. Took me 30 years to learn how to a) cook a steak properly and b) cook an egg properly.

Rarely, due to cost.
But when we have it we have it with Béarnaise sauce, spinach, vine tomatoes, boursin stuffed mushrooms. A glass of good red.
After, coffee and a few pieces of chilli chocolate.

Yum. Hungry now Envy

Another thread that's made me hungry!
Oh yes! (Can you tell I'm a true carnivore? Grin)
Fillet (only me here mostly), thick cut, fried 3 mins on one side in a good hot pan, then 2 mins on the other, served with chunky cut chips and fried onions, with a dollop of whole grain mustard on the side.

We eat steak at least once every week, we'll eat rump, sirloin, ribeye and chateaubriand if we've feeling really flash. We try to get good thick aged cuts, season heavily, fry at a very high heat till rare, rest and then slice against the grain and plate up. Dcs like it too, although dd is a bit squeamish about the fat. Hmm agree that Aldi's steak is incredibly good value and very tasty?

The best cut we have found is so random. It's bloody hard to predict, we have eaten an organic rib eye while the dcs had a Waitrose Essentials Rump and their's was infinitely better and about half the price.

Maybe once a month. I cook sirloin, and we have it with chips, salad and peas.

DS really likes it, but my DDs will eat it, but could take it or leave it. They like the chips, though!

Yes once or twice a month. Rarely eat it out now as butchers locally sell such good quality organic meat that retaurant steak is usually disappointing. Kids have eaten since weaning as so tender. Usually have fillet or fillet tail

We have steak as an occasional treat - usually rib eye from the butchers - dh is the steak chef here and is very particular about how he cooks it. We all like it rare, although tbh it's often a Saturday night treat for just dh and I. Ds1 requested steak and chips for his birthday meal last year though Smile

Dh deglazes the pan with a little red wine - we aren't big on fancy sauces. We like it served with homemade chips, Dijon mustard, sauteed mushrooms and a really good green salad tossed in vinaigrette.

AryaOfHouseSnark
Peppercorn sauce: use pan from steaks for extra flavour, and use butter at then end to season steak. With melted butter add plain flour to make a paste (take off the heat too do it) then add some beef stock bit at at time and back on the heat (approx mug full) let it boil and keep whisking in to a gravy, add double cream (as much or little as you want, i like it really creamy, so add shit loads!) then add black cracked pepper. You need a good couple of table spoons but its up to you how much you like the kick. Keep it boiling and it'll reduce down.

If I've got the flour / butter wrong at the beginning, I just thicken up with corn flour. I judge all peppercorn sauces on my own, as I love my own Grin Too much stock makes it like a gravy, and not enough cream is boring and dull. DP also likes it thick too, like a gravy.

I like fillet steak and so does dd. We tend to have it on rare occasions, maybe 3-4 times a year. Fillet steak that is decent is ££££s (about £10 for two small ones) from the butcher.

Occasionally at home (Every 3-4 months), but quite often if we go out.

Is quite expensive, so didn't want to ruin it, as I thought it was hard to cook; till I researched it. Gordon Ramsay's method seems best.

I like entrecote (rib steak?)
Always make sure it is at room temperature first. Rub some olive oil into both sides of meat.
Heat pan till it smokes (don't add fat.)
Put steak in, cook on same side until fully cooked, then turn.
Take out of pan, leave to rest for 15 mins (covered) before serving.

I make a sauce out of the jus, some red wine (deglaze pan) and a bit of cream and a bit of roquefort and black pepper.

Serve with french style green beans (boiled then cooked in butter, garlic and onions) and saute potatoes

If you use your pan from the steaks, aren't they cold by the time the sauce is cooked?

Report
SquidgyMummy · 30/04/2014 23:02

no, cover in the steak paper from butcher and cover with padded oven gloves

Report
BIWI · 30/04/2014 23:02

Not very often, because we all like thick fillet steaks, which are really expensive!

Oh, and yes - both DC really enjoy steak.

We often to go a local Italian restaurant, and they/I might order the fillet steak there as well, so it's on the menu more often than I might cook it.

Probably have it about once a fortnight, favourite cut is rib eye cooked medium to well done.

DD used to eat it up until aged about 10. She suddenly became extremely fussy with food and I got fed up of feeding hers to the dog so now I don't bother making her steak Grin

Maybe once a year, although we do like it. DH and I that is. One of my DCs doesn't like potatoes or any sort of plain food (only likes pasta, curries, noodles etc) so probably wouldn't eat it. The other probably would, although she's not keen on chips.

I like it medium rare with a mushroom and blue cheese sauce.

We occasionally treat ourselves to a bit of fillet to make beef stroganoff too.
