Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

Thanks Dame

Americas I do find Greek yogurt with a drizzle of honey quite comforting. Maybe I should get baking that banana bread too. Thank you.

Have to confess that the Green & Blacks Easter eggs that I spotted earlier are looking very tempting. I might get one. It's dark chocolate at least.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 16/04/2014 20:03

everything in moderation....

on this subject though I was trying to think what foods I would find "comforting" because even the old stuff like mashed potato and cheese sandwiches and copious amounts of chocolate used to make me feel guilty and now I get no lasting pleasure AND the guilt. I'd rather have just really good really tasty food. I'm not sure what "comforts" me but I def feel so good after something like a feta, quinoa, coriander and lime salad or huge bowl of raspberries or some nuts and dried cranberries. So, actually, why the hell am I still gorging on food that doesn't satisfy me in any way?

Coumarin · 16/04/2014 21:08

Yes. I cracked and had two slices of toast with Nutella after my last post. Then I went to the shop for some food bits (hoping to find comforting healthy food.) and wondered why so suddenly felt really tired and kind of out of it.

Now it could be hormones/pmt or it's the bread (whole meal but still...) and sugar. I can actually physically feel how crap it is. I've never been able to do that before.

Rummikub · 16/04/2014 22:28

Hi

The banana muffins sound tasty. Would it go against the spirit of them if I used butter instead of coconut oil?

I'm doing quite badly at the moment, just bread and 4 mini lindt chocolate eggs today. Oh and a bacon butty. And a handful of crisps with guacamole.

Interesting idea of something that's comforting but healthy. I find stew with dumplings comforting. Guess if I made it with lots of veg?

You all sound like your doing amazingly well!

stilllearnin · 16/04/2014 22:45

I'm struggling with the holidays a bit. Today I didn't want to cook. My parents are staying with me - my mum and I emptied the fridge and said lets just steam all this veg and stir fry the rest. A plate of veg later, I felt miles better. Thing was no matter how tired and lazy I was feeling, the last thing I wanted to do was go to the shop to get a couple of pizzas! I'm planning to attempt to roast a whole cauliflower tomorrow!

stilllearnin · 16/04/2014 22:48

Comfort food new style is something like pukka detox tea. You won't find me polishing my halo just yet tho- I still find getting the balance throughout the day just beyond my reach. There seem to be lots of things waiting to trip me up!

Coumarin · 16/04/2014 22:58

I didn't do well today. Generally the only unhealthy thing was the Nutella on toast but I didn't eat enough fruit and veg either. Despite craving comfort food I also lose my appetite when on my period.

So I'm writing today off and putting in more effort tomorrow. I found some popcorn and snack bars whilst out food shopping. The popcorn only has sea salt added and very lightly and the bars are all natural, raw and cold pressed. Think they're by Nàked.

Having read the ingredients on the bars I think I could whip some up with my new blender toy. Worth a try anyway.

Coumarin · 16/04/2014 22:59

Let us know how the cauliflower turns out stillearnin

Bizkit · 17/04/2014 09:56

I wanna give green smoothies a go, has any one got any good ones I can start with?
I have at the mo got an avocado, spinach, kale, lemons, limes, milled flax seeds, I'm worried it will taste foul if I just bung anything in need a recipe?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/04/2014 13:13

You need fruit in green smoothies but blitzed fruit is bad for your teeth so I'm not convinced tbh. Ice cream would definitely make then more palatableWink

Boiled eggs for breakfast

Spinach, tomato, avocado and seeds salad with smoked mackerel. Yoghurt and banana and grapes.

Not sure about dinner yet...

AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/04/2014 14:17

Bizkit you want to mix things up in the following amounts:
2cups veg
2cups liquid base
3cups fruit

This am I had 1 banana, 1 cup of frozen blueberries, 1 cup frozen spinach, 2 cups water, teaspoon of agave and DH and I shared it

AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/04/2014 14:18

(And then I brushed my teeth Wink)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/04/2014 14:34

Sorry,I used to work for a dentist. They are very anti juice even if you brush your teethBlush

AmericasTorturedBrow · 17/04/2014 15:40

ah well - maybe the oil pulling will redress the balance?!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/04/2014 16:16

Ha ha possibly Grin

Coumarin · 17/04/2014 17:04

What if you suck it through a straw Dame ?

Yes don't just throw anything in Biz I did that and the result were not good to say the least.

fuzzpig · 17/04/2014 17:44

TBH I am perfectly happy eating lots of veg so I have no intention of drinking them :o

I love eating tons of veg too but I do love a smoothie - juices I can't be arsed with (tried that, too much faff and I'm not convinced they end up being that good for you once you remove all the fiber that helps you break down the sugars), but a smoothie, yes.

In fact I've just had one for lunch (alongside some sugar snap peas and mini heirloom toms)....avocado, pineapple, coconut milk, chia seeds and spinach

it might make up for the late night mexican hot chocolate I sent DH out to get yesterday Blush

Bizkit · 17/04/2014 21:19

I did a smoothie earlier, 1cup spinach 1cup kale, 1cup almond milk, half an avocado and just a handful of berries, so not much fruit and it tasted fine, although I need to invest in a better machine ten whizz it up in.

Coumarin · 17/04/2014 22:08

Adding ice cubes before you whisk it up makes it even nicer Bizkit

I'm very happy eating lots of veg too but smoothies are a quick and easy way of getting even more raw veg in. Plus things like raw ginger, wheatgrass, seeds, spirulina powder which I wouldn't normal eat. I don't do juices either which is why I like the nutribullet I bought.

Pretty good day food wise today. Porridge and berries for breakfast. Banana and Nàked snack bar mid morning. Tuna pimped up salad for lunch. Smoothie and apple mid afternoon. Roasted tri coloured peppers, red onion, tomatoes and courgette with chicken, feta and bulger wheat, quinoa and barley for dinner.

Drank 2 litres of water and now having a peppermint tea.

Smoothie was spinach, pea shoots, bit of kale, strawberries, chia seeds, coconut oil and coconut water. Added ice cubes before blending too. Looked terrible but tasted good.

Sleepwhenidie · 17/04/2014 22:14

Hi-I thought I'd lost you all ! To be fair I deserve to be kicked off the thread, based on this week (on holiday) and a new low today...fish and chips for lunch and pasta (yes, white) this evening. All routine and planning is completely out of the window - also no exercise, I feel rubbish, tired, bloated and extremely grumpy (not great on holiday!). The only good thing is that we are coming home in a few days, bit of a light at the end of the tunnel Grin.

Rummikub · 18/04/2014 00:11

I'll raise you nachos with cheese!

Coumarin · 18/04/2014 01:42

You know I've never had nachos! Are they nice Rummi ?

Hi Sleep Hope it hasn't been all bad. The fish and chops sound good.

Rummikub · 18/04/2014 03:26

Yes they are. With lots of guacamole and salsa. I could almost convince myself they're healthy!

Coumarin · 18/04/2014 09:42
Smile

Sleep I meant fish and chips obviously. Fish and chops doesn't sound too nice at all.
