Here's the previous thread where it all began!

EatBetterers are trying to improve the diets of ourselves and our families. No weighing, restricting, calorie counting etc - just finding joy in nourishing ourselves by making positive changes one step at a time. All welcome! :)

Actually I don't feel bad about the fish and chips , I really enjoyed those. It was the pasta I ate for the sake of it and then thought-why on earth didn't I just eat the steak and asparagus and leave the blimmin pasta at 10pm at night! Also my dad is staying with us and a meal without white carbs is a troubling concept to him Smile. Other problem is the dc's are staying up a bit later with their cousins while the adults have a drink and then it means we don't think about dinner til at least 9.30, by which point all enthusiasm for cooking a healthy meal is out of the window (wine has a lot to answer for Hmm!)

Lots of kickboxing training I have to do next week, for my grading and an event, that should make me feel better. I am also contemplating a 3 day juice 'reboot'/cleanse type thing, anyone tried it?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 18/04/2014 12:04

I had a hot cross bun at 11pm and woke up to my period - do you think the two could be connected? Hmm Grin

Reading about ginger in juices reminded me that I used to eat finely chopped ginger and pineapple in salads, will give it another go.

I can't remember if I updated on my chutney -it worked out really well especially the tomato one, really peps up a bland chicken breast.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 18/04/2014 14:48

my parents arrived last night, all good intention out the window and I had wine and white pasta (DC leftovers) at 9pm. I'm going to have to be very strict with myself the next few weeks while they're here, it's too easy to slip into "holiday mode" and while my mum particularly generally eats very healthily, they've brought hot cross buns and British chocolate with them, and dad particularly likes a few glasses of wine each evening.

sleep I did a juice cleanse last year and got so hungry by day 2 that I allowed raw food into it on the third day, but I have quite a few friends who do it often and swear by it for resetting/cleansing while still have some nutrients/dropping an emergency lb or two! But then I live in LA - it's weird if you don't juice!

god how I love ginger Dame!

Coumarin · 18/04/2014 18:59

Americas You live in the ultimate juicing city? Are there tons of juicing bars? I always imagine everyone there being super fit and healthy. All glossy and glowing. I've never been so basing my view on American reality shows and dramas. Smile

Today has been a total fail on the health front. I've eaten fair bit of Easter egg chocolate and DH is busy making hot cross buns so obviously it'd be rude not to try three one.

Most of the Easter choc is G&B and Divine dark chocolate so could be worse. I really enjoyed it though.

stilllearnin · 18/04/2014 19:47

Reporting back on the whole roasted cauliflower. It was ok. I have a cold but it didn't seem to pick up the flavours I rubbed into it. It's worth trying again and I had the oven on anyway. The other plus is it was easy to cook without danger of all stinky over-cooked cauli!

I'm going to possibly have some wine tonight and off to another festival tomorrow and I'm not prepared. But I would say that emotionally this way of eating is so much better for me. I have over eaten often sometimes to the point of
binging and it was getting worse. So dieting is very very
dodgy. This way I am not depriving myself and so I don't overeat. It's much much more balanced.

Sleepwhenidie · 20/04/2014 17:06

Anyone else amused by the radio silence on the thread at the moment SmileHmm...Easter-kids at home-kids away-periods-being on holiday-parents visiting...should we perhaps think of Tuesday as a fresh start and just pretend the preceding week never happened food-wise? Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/04/2014 17:43

Oh God, I'm so full of roast leg of lamb! I made some sugar free muffins and I've eaten loads and also a few of ds's chocolates. Not too bad tbh compared to other years where I've eaten ds's eggs and had to replace them even before EasterBlush Hmm

fuzzpig · 20/04/2014 17:52

Can we say Wednesday instead :o DCs not back til then!

Rummikub · 20/04/2014 18:27

fuzzpig · 20/04/2014 18:34

Er yes, maybe a clean slate next week would be a good idea.

Yesterday was a chocolate fest. Today wasn't as bad. Porridge as per, spinach, smoked salmon and poached eggs at lunch and a fruit smoothie. Then we had a roast chicken dinner which was gorgeous.

And then dark choc ice cream and half a chocolate hen. Ahem.

Rummikub · 20/04/2014 22:40

Tea toast & nut butter, egg on toast for lunch (big thing for me having lunch by myself!) lamb & spinach curry & rice. Tea & 3 digestives. Am I eating too much? I realise its not great food, but wondering quantity wise.

Sleepwhenidie · 20/04/2014 23:18

Not at all Rummi Smile.

Coumarin there's nothing wrong with today!

Fuzz I don't think I've ever tried duck eggs, are they stronger tasting than hens'?

Rummikub · 21/04/2014 01:48

Thanks sleep :)

AmericasTorturedBrow · 21/04/2014 04:38

I won't bother checking in properly today Blush

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/04/2014 10:14

Coumarin-food was fine!

Duck eggs are amazing, they taste like the best hen's egg everEnvy

fuzzpig · 21/04/2014 10:15

Sleep - I'd describe duck eggs as richer, and with creamier yolks :)

Hi all, I have been reading this thread for encouragement/inspiration to stick with my own plans to eat better, and would like to mention to the pp who was talking about roasting cauliflower, try roasting a romanesco cauliflower in olive oil and add lemon juice to serve its delish, also works well with broccoli.

stilllearnin · 22/04/2014 10:09

Thank you Stella. This was a recipe with cumin, lemon, and sumac but I'll try your suggestion. A fresh start is making me smile too! But I am avoiding that mentality so far as in my mind it sits with dieting hang ups (that's in my mind and I know it'll be different for different people).

Bramshott · 22/04/2014 10:43

Morning all! Hope everyone has had a good Easter?

I survived our holiday remarkably well on the food front - there's something to be said for being in a holiday cottage where the only food in the house is stuff you have actively chosen to buy (and recently!). The local supermarket did a great spelt and pumpkin seed bread which I am still dreaming about, and we just didn't buy too much unhealthy stuff.

Doing less well since we've come back, as my mother bought us an Easter egg and I am eating it, although I don't really even like it Confused...

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2014 13:23

I've just eaten a million little Korean pancakes with spring onions, courgettes, prawns and squid. I skipped breakfast so I could pig out and will have salad for balance later on. Talking of balanced meals ds holding a yorkshire pudding in each hand and saying ' Mum, look, a balanced meal!' made me chuckle of Easter. Grin

Sleepwhenidie · 22/04/2014 13:44

still - its a fresh start with the mindfulness, rather than the food itself. I don't know about everyone else, but I feel like I have just been eating for the sake of it, sometimes when I'm not hungry, sometimes without any enjoyment even and often its been food I know isn't going to make me feel good - that's what needs to be reined in, not the food itself Smile. Bram - your comment re the Easter egg sums it up!

Pancakes sound good Dame - and your DS very funny!

fuzzpig · 22/04/2014 15:13

:o at balanced yorkshires :o

Phew kind of glad holidays are over and we can get back to normal tomorrow. I've actually missed the school run and noticed my sleep got worse on the days we didn't do anything much, particularly when it was awful weather so we stayed inside.

I had a horrendous night. Anxiety, anger and depression through the roof, it was quite scary and I'm freaking exhausted as I didn't sleep til the small hours. And here's the embarrassing bit. I think it might be caffeine related. Sometimes I get these awful nights and it got me wondering if there's a pattern. I don't have pepsi/coke/dr pepper very much at all now, I basically only have it with a meal out and never at home anymore, BUT in places where there's unlimited sodas (like where we went for lunch yesterday) it's easy to overdo it Blush - and because I don't have it often, and drink no tea/coffee, the caffeine really affects me. ME/CFS can also lead to increased sensitivity/bad reactions to all sorts of things so another reason to be careful.

I love it though :( nowt like a really cold Pepsi on a hot day! Clearly I have to limit it to just one, though.
