I've made a couple recently that I want to show off to people... We could all go 'ooooh' at each other's efforts!

Finished the postbox cake. Not too happy with the man and would have liked to do the top again but I ran out of time.

The lilac cake isn't finished yet. Need to add a few finishing touches.

I've got about a million cakes to finish tomorrow for mothers day.

Alpaca, I've been meaning to formally invite you for Brew

You know it would be everso rude to turn up empty handed?

:o

I am both subtle and dignified.

My dcs loved Mistlethrush's garden cake. Full of potatoey, parsnipy, carroty, appley goodness.

Nannycook I bought a plastic mould to make letters like you have used on your pink castle cake but I couldn't get them out without the fondant ripping, is there something I'm missing (probably!)

5madthings · 29/03/2014 17:13

I had a set of little metal cutters of the alphabet, they came in a little tin. For doing letters. I find moulds tricky, they say to dust with cornflour?

AuntFlossy · 29/03/2014 17:25

Thanks guys :))

nannycook · 29/03/2014 17:34

Tinkerball, the trick is to get the fondant really thin almost see through you can either give them a sharp whack against the work top, or I find it easier to use a fine paint brush and gently push the icing out.hope that helps.

5madthings · 29/03/2014 17:36

What kind of fondant, do you make it or buy it? I buy ready to roll icing. Make butter or fudge icing etc.you can buy alsorts now and there are some fab online suppliers I have seen.

MikeLitoris · 29/03/2014 18:46

Flower paste is best for letters. Roll it very thin.

AlpacaPicnic · 30/03/2014 13:56

Why thank you fuckyou I would be delighted! I'll bring cheesecake, lemon drizzle and a Guinness chocolate cake

I made a strawberries and cream layered sponge, covered with cheesecake 'buttercream' last week... But I ate it all before I remembered to take a photo!
Hmm, will have to make another one Wink

Middle of cricket ball was filled with white chocolate and raspberry ganache, and the base should have had a heart of the same in each slice, but sadly I never did find out what happened to it or get any photos of it once cut Sad.

5madthings · 01/04/2014 18:27

Oh no stealth that sucks :(

How did you get heart shapes in each slice?!!

stealthsquiggle · 01/04/2014 18:53

5madthings those cake pops look great - how do you get the coating so smooth? - whenever I try and coat cake pops with white chocolate or anything like it it seizes Angry and even my dark choc ones are nowhere near that perfect.

Hidden centre cake was my first play with this, which I bought myself in the US with a "mad money" Amazon card I won. I now need to try it again on a cake that I actually get to cut!

stealthsquiggle · 01/04/2014 18:59

Nannycook - do you have a wood texture plate that you use for the doors and windows on your castle? I have been contemplating putting one on a wishlist but so far have done wood (for arks, pirate ships and the like) "freehand"

5madthings · 01/04/2014 20:18

I put my cake pops in the freezer for an hour or so before I dip them in the melted choc and then tap them to get any excess off. It sets really quickly and smoothly then :)

My Amazon wishlist is now there pages long with various crafty/bakey accessories!

Taffeta · 01/04/2014 20:30

Cake pops from last Easter. A bit of a faff for me, in two minds about whether to make some this year....

stealthsquiggle · 01/04/2014 21:23

I think maybe I froze my cake pops too long (a week Grin) and/or let them thaw too much so there was too much moisture - hence the chocolate problems. Next time I think I will take them out of the freezer in small batches so that they are coated before they get damp.

Taffeta · 01/04/2014 21:27

stealth - I find the best coating for cake pops are candy melts. Hobbycraft do them or you can get them online. They have a thicker consistency than normal melted chocolate.
