I've made a couple recently that I want to show off to people... We could all go 'ooooh' at each other's efforts!

God why do I post everything twice!

pixiegumboot · 22/03/2014 20:25

So how do I get the icing to roll out properly, is it because I'm buying shite supermarket roll out icing? Do I need to go to a proper cake supplies shop?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/03/2014 20:34

How are you doing it Pixie?

I use a specially designed silicone mat from Lakeland for rolling out icing (I use the supermarket stuff) and pastry. Dust the mat and rolling pin with icing sugar and make sure everything is scrupulously clean before starting.

moosemama · 22/03/2014 20:53

Having the right tools really helps. Silicone icing mat and silicone rolling pin, hands and rolling pin covered in a very slight/smidge of white vegetable fat (like Trex).

I don't use icing sugar for rolling out, as it's too messy and dries the icing which can sometimes make it crack.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 22/03/2014 21:06

Well, I've only used fondant icing a few times so that's a tip I will try and remember, I usually still have some of my once a year packet of Trex (bought for mince pie making) left when the DCs birthdays roll round in Jan.

icing sugar has worked well for me so far but did dull my black icing slightly.

moosemama · 22/03/2014 21:11

You only need the slightest hint of Trex, but it revolutionised my cake decorating when someone gave me that tip. Definitely worth a try. Also really useful when you are molding sugarpaste to stop it sticking to your fingers/hands. Again just the lightest of coating and it won't stick.

Name changed so I won't be recognised...

Here is a piñata cake I made for dd's birthday.

Wow these are all amazing! I love decorating cupcakes and biscuits not sure if I've got any pictures on this computer will have a look.
I was so excited for dd 1st birthday to start making fancy cakes DH doesn't really like a fuss made of his birthday Hmm so just bake a cake for him never really decorate it but turns out we're away for her birthday do you think I am traumatising her by not making a first birthday cake?! Wink We will have the family round for tea when we're home but quite a lot on at the moment so don't think we'll make a big party she's very shy anyway...

birdbrain21 · 22/03/2014 21:28

found a picture of some cupcakes I made recently for some friends, hope they don't out me I'm rubbish at thinking of name changes...

Does the Trex not stop the icing sticking to the marzipan when covering the cake, or sticking together when modelling or attaching models to the cake?

I roll out between sheets of cling-film and use cooled, boiled water as glue. I dust my hands with cornflour and then 'polish' the icing with my hands to ease it over the cake and give it a smooth sheen.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 23/03/2014 07:59

Love the cupcakes!

birdbrain21 · 23/03/2014 09:53

hergraciousmaj are you talking about my cupcakes?! Smile I'm still quite new to the whole decorating thing so feel very proud if anything ever works out!

Tinkerball · 23/03/2014 14:23

I bought a silicone mat and its rubbish, as the icing still sticks, can anyone recommend a decent one? Supermarket icing is fine, Morrisons is nice and is what I use.

5madthings · 23/03/2014 15:22

I roll it out on clingfilm and then you can pick it up on the clingfilm and flip it onto the cake, that's how I did the circles on my captain america cake. No icing sugar as I didn't want to disclosure it, tho if you use it you can generally rub/polish it off.

moosemama · 23/03/2014 19:35

HerGracious, I don't use marzipan with sugarpaste, only with royal icing, so I don't know, sorry.

It doesn't stop modelled paste from sticking together though. I've used it plenty of times and not had any problems with modelling. I usually use water to stick sugarpaste as well, but do use edible glue for larger pieces that are likely to be subject to a lot of gravity pull, iyswim.

I want one of those American 'The Mat' icing sheets that you can use to roll and flip sugarpaste, but they are ridiculously over-priced for what they are. I've never got on with using clingfilm, but then clingfilm and I are old enemies as I can't seem to handle it without getting it all either stuck to itself or ripped in the wrong places - and I always lose the end of the roll. Blush

Tinkerball sorry, I can't remember where I got mine from now, but it was definitely an online sugarcraft supplies shop. The silicone has enough grab to stop the sugarpaste sliding around as you roll and so you can lift it onto the cake, but you can still lift it off and reposition if you want to. I like the fact mine has printed guides/measures for sizing up the icing as well - makes life a lot easier.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 23/03/2014 19:37

Mine sounds similar to Moosemama's, got it from Lakeland.

cardamomginger · 23/03/2014 19:53
