I've made a couple recently that I want to show off to people... We could all go 'ooooh' at each other's efforts!

One of the GIANT chocolate cakes I used to supply to a local cake shop, this one was for an 18th birthday. They stand about 3.5 inches tall.

Also one of my favourite wedding cakes ever made (because the bride was such a lovely lady) and an Angelina Ballerina cake for a friend.

Lovely blueberry, they always have been! You're so clever.

MikeLitoris · 19/03/2014 20:15

Nanny I made a 2 tier one of those buttercream swirl cakes last month. Much harder than I thought it would be!

blueberry Your cakes are always fab. I love that chocolate one.

nannycook · 19/03/2014 20:29

Up, its OK once you start, but I do find piping on sides hard, not sure why.

RedundantExpat · 19/03/2014 21:11

You are all wizards! amazing.

can I have a tiny little pat on the back, too, though? Have just made cake/muffins for 3 classes with 20 kids each: my 3 DDs' birthdays are tomorrow!

nannycook · 19/03/2014 21:19

Redundant, you truly are a supermam.

RedundantExpat · 19/03/2014 21:40

oh thank you nanny! My cakes look crap-pish so I won't make bother you with a picture of them, but I do feel like marathon baker when THE birthday comes around and I bake for the classes and their party.

Lovecat · 19/03/2014 21:45

Redundant, you are indeed a Stakhanovite cake baker - well impressive!

Now that MN will let me post a few more pics, here are some more of mine - this is my first attempt at a wedding cake, for FIL and (now) MIL's wedding a few years ago. Royal Icing butterflies are bastards... :o

And this is DD's from last year - the middle 'burger' is a chocolate brownie!

And lastly a Charlie and Lola cake I made a few years back, sides and top.

Cute.

stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2014 11:56

Cricket ball cake - it has a "hidden surprise" centre in the base, but I won't get photos of that until it is judged and cut this afternoon

Stealth. Brilliant.

moosemama · 20/03/2014 13:37

Stealth that's fantastic. How did you do the grass? I love my grass/hair nozzle, but think it tends to give cartoon-style grass, rather than anything realistic.

Think I've decided to bite the bullet and try and give my boys the cakes they've asked for. Could be a complete disaster, but it's worth a shot.

I've bought a Blastoise collectable figure to use as a guide and also found a step by step guide to drawing him, so that will help with basic shapes. Haven't formulated the whole plan yet, but think it will probably involve some rice crispie cake moulding for the legs and guns.

As for the ender dragon, there are lots of pictures around from all angles if you Google, but I think I need to find one of it lying down, as I don't want to be getting into cakes standing on four legs and having to use boards for reinforcement. Been watching lots of guides for covering square cakes in fondant and whilst I won't be able to get a sharp line, I think it will be good enough to do the job.

Of course I may still chicken out if I can't come up with a good enough plan for them.

stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2014 14:10

The grass is all extruded fondant (with a sugar gun thingy) because I am crap at piping don't have a grass nozzle.

Ender dragon - could you make him out of blocks of chocolate (with a suitable mould) and make the cake as a generic pixel-y base?

moosemama · 20/03/2014 17:25

Oo a new sugarcraft toy, I will have to investigate that one. Grin

Unfortunately ds1 cant' stand chocolate, so it will have to be cake. He's coeliac as well, which adds a whole new dimension to baking cakes fit for decorating.

HerGraciousMajTheBeardedPotato · 20/03/2014 17:58

Never mind the grass - how did you get that perfect surface on the cricket ball?!?!?! Shock

stealthsquiggle · 20/03/2014 19:34

Cricket ball was polished with hands to get it smooth - I did try to ease the icing all the way round but had to pinch a couple of folds out and trim them off in the end - joins polished out quite well. Then once I had done the seam I sprayed it with clear lustre spray and then 'roughed up' one side of the ball as per DH and DS's instructions - something which all the blokes at the bake off were commenting on Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 21/03/2014 19:58

VanGogh - I cheated and just made the northern hemisphere of my globe cake! I wasn't confident enough to do a whole planet!

The different layers inside -to whomever asked, sorry I've forgotten your name- I made by half filling the hemisphere cake pan with appropriately coloured cake batter, then resting the smaller sized pan inside and 'trapping' it in place with the oven shelves so it wouldn't rise out of shape. It took several trial-and-error sessions to come up with that technique. I made a full cake of the smallest size, and two bigger 'bowls' of cake then sandwiched them together with buttercream and jam.

The technique suggested in the instructions I found were different - they wanted you to bake the smaller cake, then bake the bigger cake with the smaller on inside it, then the biggest with the first two layers inside. But I found that this resulted in under baked gloppy layers.

DD's unassisted Amnesty bake sale cake.

I've bookmarked this thread as reference for all the ideas which are brilliantly ingenious but require relatively little actual skill. The Wimpy Kid one is about my level of ability (if I use pre-rolled fondant).
