Got a fridge full of nonsense, or indeed, rather lacking in anything?

This thread is to help those stumped for ideas with what they have lurking in their fridge/freezer/cupboard and need to knock something up.

I am here quite a lot, and as a professional (resting) cook I would relish the challenge to help people out!

Actually, thinking about it, I wonder if animal shelters might be able to make sure of items like left over weetabix?

youretoastmildred · 05/01/2014 13:54

Natasha, you mean crunched up as bedding?

With dogs I don't think it matters! Smile Can see where you are coming from if you don't like them though. I was just thinking that I hate waste and would feel guilty about throwing food out to add to landfill if it could be used somewhere else.

IDismyname · 05/01/2014 16:05

Giveme - Google "New Recipes with Weetabix" - you get quite a lot of interesting replies, most of which involve copious amounts of chocolate...

Hang on... who has the chocolate mountain upthread....???

Re chutney - I get rid of a jar of the stuff in this recipe by Hugh FW
www.rivercottage.net/recipes/lamb-squash-curry/

Not sure if it would accommodate a jar of pickled onions, though!

I have some chicken breasts, black pudding, bacon and pate. Was thinking of chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with the pate and black pudding, will this work??

ancientbuchanan · 05/01/2014 22:56

MmeD,

Did the pomegranate icecream today but didn't have lime, so put some Turkish sour cherry jam instead. Pomegranate by itself doesn't work. Quite nice, would be nicer with more sour cherries. And v v rich. The boys liked it.

Now to despatch the black pudding. But tomorrow we are out, we have tradition of seeing French Friends and having a galette des rois.

youretoastmildred · 05/01/2014 23:03

sharon, I am not expert but I think that would be terribly overwhelming. Why not just eat them separately? so one meal of bacon, black pudding (and mushrooms and tomatoes); and paté and crudités and melba toast another time; and the chicken breasts probably need something, but more vegetables / herbs than anything else.... just lemon, olive oil and garlic ... or are they all just at the point of becoming inedible this second?

I went through with the chicken stuffed with black pudding and pate (just a tiny bit) and wrapped in bacon. DH loved it.

silkknickers · 09/01/2014 18:26

Madame Defarge, I have one portion of cottage pie left over from tonight. I want to bulk it up in some way and give to the 2 DSs tomorrow. any ideas????

cjbk1 · 09/01/2014 18:31

loads of oranges?

TisTheSeasonToBeUnreasonable · 10/01/2014 12:05

Oooh loving this thread!! I have:

Beef mince
Broccoli
Carrots
Sweet potato
Red onion
Double cream

And food cupboard staples! I was going to make spag Bol but perhaps you have other plans ...it even an amazing spag Bol recipe

DuskAndShiver · 10/01/2014 12:09

Ok I am going to pipe here although I am no expert...

cjb - orange salad for pudding? (with grand marnier or cointreau in it?)

Or marmalade - which should be made with seville oranges but if you add a lemon for extra sourness / bitterness maybe that would work

Tishtheseason - you could make a kind of potato pie with the carrots, sweet potato and cream - like a mad cousin of potatoes dauphinoise. It would be quite sweet, though, and might need some real potato as well

cjbk1 · 10/01/2014 19:13

Lovely ideas thanks

Just spied this thread after starting one of my own...is there a cheats way to make onion bhajis?

We're having a tikka tonight but I only have sr/plain flour available atm...can I use either of those? Or shall I just leave them for tonight?

Also, any other accompaniments I might be able to knock up quickly.

tyvm Smile

lucysmam · 11/01/2014 13:59

Aaaand...what shall I make with the reduced joint of pork dp has just brought back from asda? (doing a roast chicken tomorrow)

PigletJohn · 11/01/2014 20:01

if it's reduced for BB date, surely you should cook it, and save the chicken?

lucysmam · 11/01/2014 20:02

I've frozen it...never had any problems freezing to be cooked at a later date Smile

MadameDefarge · 11/01/2014 22:03
