So DH has just told me that the DCs diet today has been rubbish. I disagree what do you think?

Ok so it's not exactly going to win awards for healthy day of the year but I genuinely don't think what they've eaten today is too bad.

Two Weetabix with raisins (and sugar)
Slice toast with marmite
Strawberry and banana smoothie

Lunch spaghetti bolognese which had mushrooms peppers onions, tomatoes in it as well as beef mince and some lentils and herbs
Muller fruit corner for pudding
Water to Drink

Large lemon curd cupcake at movie time (plus a lick of the bowl each)

Ham roll with crisps and grapes, another lemon cupcake and a glass of milk

It's not that bad is it?

Novack... I do know that technically speaking mushrooms are a fungus not a vegetable. But as they are full of nutrients, antioxidants, some fibre and have zero fat and Low sugar then it is valid to count them in the 'five a day category' especially as the nutrients are not broken down by cooking.
Similarly cooked tomatoes are extremely healthy and better than raw and I guess that is why I class them as a veg in this situation.

So novack, all Americans are too thick to know about vegetables etc and all have crap diets? Is that actually what you just said?

Insulting and generally about a whole country! Amazing!

You clearly have issues with food and will most likely pass them on to your children. Good luck with the eating disorders.

Re 2 lollies - I think this is the problem. What is the REAL difference between having a glass of diluted orange juice and a bowl of strawberries and raspberries than having it all mushed up and frozen in a lolly?

None. Except other people's presumptions.

Also, there is more to a healthy diet than just having skinny kids who appear to be healthy. Your body is a complex combination of systems and needs all sorts of nutrients for both short term and long term health. What you feed your kids has an immediate effect, but it also can help prevent cancer and diabetes and heart disease when they are older. If you fill them up with empty calories (ie sugar, fat) then that means they are eating less of the nutrients they need for long term survival. I'm sorry to sound preachy about this, but my father is a leading scientist in this field (works on aging and the causes of cancer) and there is just so much more to it than whether your kids are skinny or not.

Lemon curd is amazing on homemade buns! Anyway my dd (3) has had:
b- 2 weetabix, a satsuma and a yoghurt
s- nothing today but usually has breadsticks/crackers and cheese or cucumber and carrot sticks
l- cheese sandwich, a banana, a small gingerbread man
s- half a bag of quavers
d- 2 fishfingers, broccoli, peas

I usually cook from scratch but had a birthday party to go to so was a quick dinner today!

mumblecrumble, the difference is that a glass of diluted orange juice has no fiber. If you actually mush up the strawberries and raspberries and include the pulp in the lolly, then that has fiber and is better than the juice. But if you strain out all the pulp, then really there is no difference and personally I put that in the same category as a cake or cookie. Doesn't mean that I don't let my kids have them, but I do not feed them on a regular basis and don't view them as a substitute for fruit.

i was just about to ask where are the lemons in the lemon curd recipe! then you updated! they sound yummy.

mine wouldnt normally get yog and cake on the same day, and we occasionally get those corner yogurts as a treat but we have just come back from 4 days staying with relatives and they had one every dinner time as a'pudding' we rarely do pudding in our house.

i think it sounds ok, technically three 'treats' but it is the holidays, hell not only did mine have the corner yog every day they also got a small packet of haribo each day, again courtesy of relatives. but they also ate lots of fruit and veg as normal.

today mine have had

cereal (normally one or two weetabix with a handful of rice crispies or cheerios on the top) or toast or porridge (cant remember which child had which)

snacks of a cereal bar, apples, bananas, small oranges, grapes and some more cereal but dry in a bowl! carrot and cucumber sticks

lunch was cheese sandwiches or crackers with cheese and pickle, grapes and home made mcvitites type biscuit each, plus water to drink.

dinner was a chicken, bacon casserole done in the slow cooker with toms, mushrooms, red wine, shallots and served with mash, carrots and green beans.

the snacks have been here and there throught the day, they can help themselves to fruit and do so and the older three cut up some cucumber/carrot etc for them all to have, they had a bit of hummous with those.

the strawberry and banana smoothie was homemade the op says? so i assume just whizzed in a blender with a bit of milk? which is ok.

Also, there is a huge difference between store bought baked goods and homemade ones. I think the problem is less in Europe than in the US, but most store bought baked goods have hydrogenated vegetable oils which truly are horribly bad for you. My father says everything is ok in moderation except cigarettes, motorcycles and hydrogenated vegetable oils (he is also not very positive about high fructose corn syrup).

mumblecrumble - It depends if it's one or the other though doesn't it. In our house lolly's come out if dc are hot and want to cool down. Not after dinner. So they would still be having a bowl of greek yoghurt with berries after dinner and then if they'd had two lollies as well, that would be a lot of sugar.

But I do understand what you are saying.

i quite often sustitute normal plain flr for half plain and half wholemeal in cakes etc, esp little pear cakes and banana ones etc. i figure it makes them slightly healthier and the kids still like them, you can often put in less sugar than a recipe says as well :)

This thread is an eye opener, people care that much?! Oh dear. I am just weaning my first BLW cos I can't be arsed putting that much thought into it! So he's only 7.5 months old but I want to join in Grin today he had:

Brekkie: Porridge fingers with Ellas Purple Puree stirred in, water

Lunch: Chicken goujons and potato salad (both homemade) water

Dinner: Omelette strips with cheese, onion, ham Shock and tomato, toast fingers. Kiwi fruit. Water.

He had the runs hence egg and bread for tea doubt the kiwi will help but he loves a) fruit and b) green things so I couldn't resist!

Do people not give ham to babies then? Blush
