So DH has just told me that the DCs diet today has been rubbish. I disagree what do you think?

Ok so it's not exactly going to win awards for healthy day of the year but I genuinely don't think what they've eaten today is too bad.

Two Weetabix with raisins (and sugar)
Slice toast with marmite
Strawberry and banana smoothie

Lunch spaghetti bolognese which had mushrooms peppers onions, tomatoes in it as well as beef mince and some lentils and herbs
Muller fruit corner for pudding
Water to Drink

Large lemon curd cupcake at movie time (plus a lick of the bowl each)

Ham roll with crisps and grapes, another lemon cupcake and a glass of milk

It's not that bad is it?

2 lollies, yoghurt with berries, added to the rest of the fruit they eat throughout the day - yes, too much.

Also, what is the need for two lollies? It's just greed. Lollies are nice, they've had one. Dh says 'oh but they like them'. Well yes, but they might also like chocolate buttons for breakfast everyday, it's not going to happen.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 22:09

Arguably fruits a lot different to chocolate buttons.

A couple of fruit lollies on a hot day in the summer hols - I'm with your dp!

CoteDAzur · 06/08/2012 22:09

When I was weaning DD, her paediatrician had said to hold off kiwi until she was 2 (3?) because of risk of allergies. She had said people worry too much about strawberries and not enough about kiwi.

PooPooInMyToes · 06/08/2012 22:10

So now we get the "a roll isn't a sandwich" point made. How pointless and pedantic Hmm

MrsBaggins · 06/08/2012 22:11

Agree bythemoonlight
four packets of crispsHmm
hoiks up judgey pants Grin

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 22:13

Home made fruit lollies and fruit and Greek
Yoghurt?

Come on! Come on! Seriously?

ComeonComeon · 06/08/2012 22:13

Your body responds to the sugar in the same way though. The concentrated sugar in juice not good, fruit as a snack ok.

My HV is pretty laid-back about weaning - I vaguely thought as I gave him the kiwi that it was prob one of these seedy fruits you're meant to watch. He's had strawbs loads already with no ill effects so prob ok.

TheSkiingGardener · 06/08/2012 22:13

Novack you forgot to mention the fact that the peppers aren't vegetables either. I assume since you are so perfect that that was a rare slip from you.

I cannot believe how much Daily Mail science is on this thread and how people cannot see the constituents of the meals when being so judgy.

No wonder the western worlds diets are so buggered, if this is how we make decisions. I think what those children ate was fine, if you bake cakes and it's the holidays then ( shock, horror) having 2 is not going to condemn you to an early death.

Happypiglet · 06/08/2012 22:13

But Sofia people have an issue with yogurt....I know they are sugary but it is not empty sugar is it... They have calcium and protein too plus prob other stuff I am too thick to know about! Despite the fact that I am not American!
Yes what we feed our kids will affect their health. But in a few years what they eat will be out of my control and I want my DC to not rebel against a veg and wholegrain regime because they only ever had humus for a snack!
Yes a fruit juice with musher up fruit is not as good as a few carrot sticks and cucumber but this is the real world and it is a darn site better than an Orange Maid.
And also re the skinny thing as obesity is one of the major predictlor for lots of killer diseases I think it is relevant if kids are a healthy weight.
and never try smoking or drinking as teenagers

ComeonComeon · 06/08/2012 22:14

The words 'home made' don't magically make cake or lollies healthy I'm afraid.

PooPooInMyToes · 06/08/2012 22:15

Jesus Christ! Two ice lollies on a hot day is too much!?

Some parents on here are so fucking uptight i can hear their arse cheeks squeaking!

I can be bothered with it and so am off to bed where i hope to dream about normal people to remind me that not all of society is so fucking paranoid about their children's diets!

CoteDAzur · 06/08/2012 22:16

I wasn't talking to you, Poo Poo. I was talking to the person who replied to my "Spag bol is the only real meal there" with "Sandwich is not a meal? Don't tell my kids!".

If you find this thread pointless, there are others on MN.

ethelb · 06/08/2012 22:16

Novack as a plant scientist I can tell you there is no scientific distinction for a vegetable it is purely culinary. Vegetables and fruit are not mutually exclusive brings.

Are you one of those thickos who goes on about birds not being animals? You sound very stupid.

ComeonComeon · 06/08/2012 22:16

I'm playing devil's advocate a bit though as I am in agreement with everyone who says a little bit of evwrythig is best and that OP gave her DCs a lovely varied diet.

Homemade as an apology for junk food gets my goat though.

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 22:17

It's not magic. Mashed up fruit. Frozen with a bit if fruit juice.

Sounds fine to me.

Happypiglet · 06/08/2012 22:17

My typing is just pants tonight!

Fedupnagging · 06/08/2012 22:17

Just knew this thread would turn a bit nasty-competitive feeding!

It's great whilst you can control what your dc's are eating but just wait until they are older and have more freedom and you start to lose that control. Mine are teenagers and whilst I sometimes always provide healthy well balanced meals, they do tend to buy large amounts of junk. Griggs sausage rolls being a favourite Shock.

Btw OP, in answer to your original question, I think the days food is fine especially the cupcakes-yumm!

ComeonComeon · 06/08/2012 22:18

Lol at ethelb

And at PooPoo

PicklesThePottyMouthedParrot · 06/08/2012 22:18

You can improve with home made. No ones saying a cake is heathly but like you say to me it's about moderation.

I have lovely memories as a child of helping make cakes and licking the bowl.

Viewofthehills · 06/08/2012 22:18

Sofia, What does your Dad think about artificial sweeteners like aspartame?
I avoid it like the plague as it gives my kids stomach cramps and diahorrea, as well as making them hyperactive and silly (I wondered if my 14 yr old DD had found some alcohol recently, but it was sugar free Vimto)

PooPooInMyToes · 06/08/2012 22:18

Cote. If you wish to speak to one poster only and have no replies from others then you would need to pm, otherwise its a public thread where we are all entitled to comment.

Jinsei · 06/08/2012 22:18

Well, it's obviously a lot of sugar and salt etc, but long as they're not eating like that every day, I think it's fine. Everything in moderation!

Today, dd (7) has had cereal (either special K or porridge) with semi-skimmed milk. No sugar but she usually adds fresh blueberries to the porridge. (DH did breakfast so I wasn't there.)

Toasted cheese sandwich for lunch on wholemeal bread, with cherry tomatoes, two raw carrots and a plum. Water to drink.

Pasta for dinner with prawns, wilted spinach leaves and roast veg (sweet potato, tomato, onion & mushrooms). Diluted orange juice to drink. No pudding today but she did have a boiled sweet after dinner.Grin

No snacks as it rarely occurs to dd to eat between meals - she just isn't that interested! Today was a fairly typical menu, I think, but we do enjoy our treats now and then. Yesterday we shared a crepe with strawberries and whipped cream. Yum!

seeker · 06/08/2012 22:19

I bt if the op's children had had he bolognqise for supper and the sandwich for lunch everyone would be waiting it was a brilliant diet.

And if you bake 12 fairly cakes, surely you are going to eat most of them th day you cook them? Or otherwise what's the poin?

bythemoonlight · 06/08/2012 22:19

I think some people on this thread do not realise how much sugar there is in fruit.

Snacking on fruit all day can do real damage to teeth.

mumblecrumble · 06/08/2012 22:19

fruit lollies (its been a slow day here - sorry i am so dull!) Strain the fruit? DO people do that?

Homemade often does mean lower sugar, less sweetners and less salt. And more importantly you know how much is in it and can portion appropriatly.

Anyway. Fruit lollies are the best olympic treat. We also had humus.... mmmmmmm humus.....

Someone at work said to me - no wonder you're over weight if yu eat humus. I was like what? And she was telling me how much olive oil is put into it and etc etc. I was completely baffled... my humus is soaked chickpeas, chopped garlic and chilly powder..... Wonder how much fat/sugar/protein etc chickpeas has..

off to google...
