Are Supermarkets getting too GREEDY

HI, i just joined this site today and after reading about a topic on supermarkets, i decided to have my say on the subject. Everything has just got so expensive. that i have found it alot cheaper to shop in the asian shops. when you but say fruit from a supermarket it is always under ripe and eventually never ripens and then ends up in the bin. Which i hate as i do not like to waste food. The other day i went to a asian shop to get 2 lamb chops and 1 red pepper and ( wait for it ) the chops cost 66p and they had all the fat trimmed off also. the red pepper was 30p. I know that mums dont have much time on there hands but shopping around realy does pay off.Markets are much cheaper too than supermarkets. I think the supermarkets make a huge profit out of us....

Hi Kaz - have found it impossible to get a contact on the net for HFW so think I may have to put pen to paper. I'll try to do that tomorrow. On the hfw website it states that they won't reply to emails unless they're something to do with River Cottage sales or the courses that they do there.

Fifichef · 19/10/2010 10:09

G'day Kaz - overnight I've had other thoughts about contacting Hugh F W. I am thinking that it would be best to get our petition together first and then with his help - present it personally to No.10 if we have been successful and collected thousands of signatures. I think that we have almost exhausted our thread on here so if it goes please contact me at [[email protected]]
Let me know if you get a good result from facebook and we'll keep our eye open for the No.10 website to reopen for petitions.
If we are successful with alot of support I will also try to rope the TV chef Lesley Waters in also - Hugh is good mates with her and they don't live too far from one another.
I should have looked up the website link so that we can both keep and eye on it but am afraid if I click back I'll lose all this so will put it on in a minute.

Fifichef · 19/10/2010 10:15

Kas - forgot already, not to do the words first and then click back to look for the address because I lost what I'd typed and had to do this again.

HI Fifi, I think that your right about waiting although it was a good idea to get in touch with him but it would look better when we have a petition in hour hands. I have saved this thread so not sure wether that will make a difference, I hope so but if we do loose this thread on here i will stay in touch with you on that e-mail. Also I will let you know when the facebook thing is up and running so you can have a look at it. I hoping to do that sooner rather than later as i havent done it properly as i am the only member on it and thats not what it should be.Kaz

What about this; We The Undersigned are protesting about the emphasis on cheapness, over quality leading to exploitation in the production of food and goods in most Supermarkets.?

ppeatfruit · 19/10/2010 14:57

For some reason I can't post more than 6 lines on here so i'll carry on.. feel free to muck about with the wording above it's just a start. Yes the producers are respected more in France but things are changing and not for the better they LOVE Macdonalds Angry Sad

kazwencol · 20/10/2010 13:30

HI GUYS, Well i now have it up on facebook under the heading of " Are Super Markets Getting Too Greedy" you have to look on groups and join up so i hope that i have done it correctly with my friends help (Bless Him )so let me know if you can find it ok and sign up if you can. KAZ

OP posts:
Fifichef · 21/10/2010 12:37

Hi ppeatfruit - yes, like the wording - have made a note of it.
Kas - need some help - have signed up to facebook but don't know how to find your bit - can you help?
Now that the 'financial' business has been sorted we must keep our eye open on the No.10 website. If nothing happens soon I will get in touch with them again!

ppeatfruit · 21/10/2010 15:52

Yes Kaz I'm on Facebook i searched for it but only the mumsnet discussion came up as a title and no more that I could find, HELP!! I also had a thought; what about le prince he's a slow food, organic fan isn't he?

Fifichef · 22/10/2010 10:44

Kaz - have searched through all the groups on facebook - is it under one of the headings - 'general interest', 'business' etc.? Been through the whole lot and it's not there - can you give us a link please??
Ppeatfruit - not sure that HRH would feel that he could get involved in a 'commercial' arguement.

ppeatfruit · 22/10/2010 13:19

You could be right Fifi but he does supply GOOD products ( though too sugary for me)!To the best ones!

kazwencol · 23/10/2010 15:28

Thanks for that Kaz - saves looking again and trying all angles. These things are really frustrating - technology is sometimes enough to drive you round the bend!

ppeatfruit · 24/10/2010 20:30

Yes thanks Kaz i know how frustrating these things can be I'm still not fully au fait with facebook.

livvylouis · 25/10/2010 14:17

Hi ladies, I have just read the whole thread, just wanted to say you can count on my support.

I can't stand supermarkets, poor quality food at high prices in my opinion. Due to our deminishing income we have relied on SM, mainly Tesco for our weekly shop because we "thought" it would be cheapest. I am fed up, we spending a huge amount each week on shopping which is very poor quality. So my dh and I have sent ourselves a challenge over the next month to buy all of our fresh produce (and dry if poss) from local independant shops, on our usual budget.

I'm pretty sure that with some careful meal planning and only buying seasonal produce that we can do our weekly shop for less than our SM shop. I will let you know how we get on!

Fifichef · 25/10/2010 17:05

Good to hear from you livvylouis - we thought that our thread had all but dried up. I am sure that there are many like us with the same opinions but unfortuantely I think we could be in the minority - many just don't seem to care that they are being manipulated and ripped off. As long as food is cheap it seems that quality is not important. Our concern is also for farmers/suppliers who are having the juice squeezed out of them. Supermarkets have become too 'all controlling'.
Good luck with your shopping plan I am very fortunate in having a local butcher and greengrocer. I can assure you that all of their produce is cheaper than the supermarket. Not only that, alot of it is produced locally. Dry goods aren't so easily obtained and, due to lack of purchasing power, are almost bound to be more expensive from small local shops. The bad thing is that most of the local privately owned shops have gone and now 'annoyingly' are being replaced by the big 4- 'serving the community ofcourse'!!!!

Fifichef · 27/10/2010 11:00

Come on mumsnetters, try to keep this thread going with your comments on the supermarkets and what you don't like or think is fair about them! We're trying to keep this thread open with supermarket grumbles until we're able to set up a petition to 10 Downing Street. They're going to open up the petition website before the end of the year and we want to let you all know what the link is going to be so that you can sign up to it. We want to collect at least 500 signatures - this ensures that it gets presented to someone in government. The SM's now have too much control over everything - we think that their greed needs to be limited!!

livvylouis · 28/10/2010 12:28

Supermarkets are over priced! If people buy seasonal produce from local independent stores i'm sure they can save money.
I know at some independant stores you can pay a premium for certain items, but you can save on others, plus the produce is so much fresher and better quality.

My dc's love going to the butchers and greengrocers and we often go to our local pick your own fruit farm. They know that the chicken they are eating is an animal, that carrots grow in dirt and that you pick apples from a tree. I work with children and too many of them dont know the basics of where our food comes from, it's know wonder they dont mind eating prepacked junk food!

Anyway rant over, support your local grocers!

kazwencol · 28/10/2010 13:12
