Are Supermarkets getting too GREEDY

HI, i just joined this site today and after reading about a topic on supermarkets, i decided to have my say on the subject. Everything has just got so expensive. that i have found it alot cheaper to shop in the asian shops. when you but say fruit from a supermarket it is always under ripe and eventually never ripens and then ends up in the bin. Which i hate as i do not like to waste food. The other day i went to a asian shop to get 2 lamb chops and 1 red pepper and ( wait for it ) the chops cost 66p and they had all the fat trimmed off also. the red pepper was 30p. I know that mums dont have much time on there hands but shopping around realy does pay off.Markets are much cheaper too than supermarkets. I think the supermarkets make a huge profit out of us....

By the way - if Mumsnet can put the chief on teli about the Eastenders fiasco they can surely do some sort of campaign about food. After all it is the FUEL of the nation.

ppeatfruit · 11/01/2011 11:36

Thanks fifiSmile I did back down in the end though! I sometimes think that most people would prefer to exist on cheap supplements than good, fresh, proper food!!

Fifichef · 11/01/2011 16:37

Unfortunately ppea you've said it in 'one' Fortunately we are not that naive to think that we are the majority but I certainly don't understand the negativity and never will. I am interested to know whether all the children in France get a free school meal - do you know? Under the thread Am i being unreasonable there is some chat on free school meals that you migh be able to add to!!

ppeatfruit · 12/01/2011 09:34

i don't teach here Fifi so i don't know. I've always thought that in Britain parents expect to pay far too little for the D.Cs school meals; free meals excluded of course.!

Hello Guys, I have another BEEF about T--cos
again today and I'm bloody fuming too.
Yesterday i had to pop into a t--cos express ( really to get change for parking metre )Anyway i was passing an isle and happened to see a SPECIAL OFFER (WHAT A JOKE ) they had 4 tins of tuna in a pack and they were slashed down from ( wait for it) £6.64 to £3.00. I was totally taken back as there was no way that they were £6.64 in the first place. So i stood there and had a moan with the security guard and then took a picture with my mobile phone. I promptly went home and rang the customer service to have a rant. They asked me some questions and told me they would sort it out with the store as it was wrong. We need to get on this asap. Also guys my topic on face book must be there as someone has asked to join it, so maybe we should start something up on Twitter.TTFN Kaz.

I do not know why they have blocked some of my message here as i blocked out some of the message (T----s ) and now it may not make much sense, so i hope you get the idea.

I didn't know you couldn't use whole names on here i've used them before and they weren't CENSORED ('cos that's what it amounts to) Shock

Fifichef · 12/01/2011 22:34

kaz - good point about the tuna - we'll have to think up a good name for tacky's 'where every little elps' Is that how mumsnet censors? it doesn't make sense because we can still read it.
One theory about your tuna. After HughFW's fish programme tonight this famous store may be trying to offload their tuna quickly because it was revealed that their tuna is not ethically caught although they say it is on the tin. Tomorrow night he is to confront them about it.
Let us know what happens to the tuna instore.
Another trick is this bogof lark - the price ccharged is more than was originally charged for one
Will have another look on twitter kaz

that article started well Fifi but the end was a bit negative wasn't it? good news on the whole though.Thank you for yr good wishes kaz and Fifi.

Wormshuffler · 14/01/2011 07:41

Hiya yes It was me who asked to join the fbook group and I found it by typing the name of it in the search box at the top.
Thanks for the link to that article this is the bit that makes my blood boil...."However the government is mindful of placing unnecessary costs on to business especially in a period of economic difficulty, which is why we plan to issue a consultation on how best to take matters forward. ----didn't they make 30 billion pounds profit last year???????

Fifichef · 14/01/2011 09:52

How right you are wormshuffler - the amount it will cost will be a drop in the ocean to the supermarkets. The polititians and the media mamby pamby round the subject because they all stand to gain in some way from the food business.
I can't believe that there was no mention of the cofirmation of a regulator being appointed in my newspaper this week. To me it is big news - obviously not to them - I'm livid. They are worried, I would think, about loosing advertisement revenue from the big 4 - quite often whole pages.

Well, I'm pleased to say that I have had a reply from Daniel Kawczynski about his question to the PM on a supermarket ombudsman. When I've worked out how to do the link I'll put it on here!

Wormshuffler - what did you type in the search box for the fbook group please?

Fifichef · 14/01/2011 10:31

Sorry folks - have just realised that my link is a year old. The most up to date info is in Dan's letter which I am hoping to post soon!

Wormshuffler · 14/01/2011 13:43

Are supermarkets getting too greedy into facebook search.

ppeatfruit · 14/01/2011 16:35

Welcome wormshuffler i SOO agree about the S.M.'s profits. i also wonder whatever happened to the monopolies commission?

Fifichef · 17/01/2011 12:55

Hi to you all - hope you had a good weekend.
I've been unable to work out how to do a link for my letter so I'm going to physically type it in here.

13th Jan'11

Dear Fifi

Thank you for contacting me about the establishment of an ombudsman to oversee the operation of the grocery market.

In it's Programme for Government, the new government set out it's commitment to establishing an ombudsman to proactively enforce the Grocery Supply Code of Practice(GSCOP).

I am strongly supportive of this commitment and am pleased that, in responding to it's consultation on the establishement of such an ombudsman, the government has announced that it will bring forward new legislation in order to set up a Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA). However, I am afraid that it is too early to know whether the Bill can be introduced in this session of the Parliament or the next.

It is my understanding that the GCA will have the power to receive complaints about the way the supermarkets interact with theit primary suppliers from anyone in the supply chain at home or overseas, and deal with them anonymously. This includes farmers who may not directly supply the large supermarkets.

The businesses that grow and produce our food are worth more than £80 billion to the economy and employ 3.6 million people - and they need a fair market. The new GCA will help to strike a balance between food producers getting a fair deal, and supermarkets ensuring their customers can get the high quality food they want at a price they can afford.

I take a keen interest in this issue and am lobbying the Prime Minister to bring this legislation in as soon as possible.

I do hope that this is useful, and thank you again for taking the time to contact me.

Yours....

Daniel Kawczynski MP

Your comments please.

lifeinlimbo · 17/01/2011 14:03

I wonder if there are any farmers still on this thread? It would be wonderful if farms set up farm shops in local communities. Fresh fruit, veg and meat, direct from the farmer mmmm.

ppeatfruit · 17/01/2011 14:34

Well done fifi that does sound good on the whole.Daniel Kawczynski seems on the ball. lifein i agree with you but it takes the farmers a lot of organisation etc.
