Are Supermarkets getting too GREEDY

HI, i just joined this site today and after reading about a topic on supermarkets, i decided to have my say on the subject. Everything has just got so expensive. that i have found it alot cheaper to shop in the asian shops. when you but say fruit from a supermarket it is always under ripe and eventually never ripens and then ends up in the bin. Which i hate as i do not like to waste food. The other day i went to a asian shop to get 2 lamb chops and 1 red pepper and ( wait for it ) the chops cost 66p and they had all the fat trimmed off also. the red pepper was 30p. I know that mums dont have much time on there hands but shopping around realy does pay off.Markets are much cheaper too than supermarkets. I think the supermarkets make a huge profit out of us....

Hi ppeatfruit - thanks for the suggestion of echinacea. When I posted my tickly throat problem echinacea was suggested as well as Manuka honey. As I love honey I went for that.Bought some last week and have finished the jar. Problem has improved but ofcourse it may return. Will try echinacea next if improvement is not long lasting.

ppeatfruit · 15/11/2010 15:31

Good Fifi if it returns try the acupressure on the previous page it's very effective. I looove Manuka honey to eat and it 's amazing on mossy bites! You can probably tell I'm into alternative health stuff!

Fifichef · 15/11/2010 22:16

Yes ppeatfruit - I'm all for natural remedies as well. As I think is with you I'm also into decent food and quite happy with less of it if it costs a bit more! Long live the 'appreciative bunch'.

ppeatfruit · 16/11/2010 13:56

My dil emailed me about an EU directive which talks about disallowing all natural remedies and supplements Shock .I'm going to start a campaign for freedom of choice if it's true.

Fifichef · 16/11/2010 20:19

Not sure but did here something about this EU directive but I don't think it applies to 'all' natural remedies - only certain ones.

ppeatfruit · 17/11/2010 08:38

Yes it wasn't clear on the email, I'm not technically up to putting it through for you. But Iam unhappy that the EU seems to have been hijacked by corporate lobbyists, so much for democracy eh?

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 11:58

Don't worry ppea have looked on the internet and have read a fairly up to date comment about it by Rosamund Parker UKIP MEP. She says that nobody has been allowed to vote on it and suggests that vested interests are at work. Apparently discussions took place behind closed doors. If there is one thing that depresses me it is all the corruption that goes on within governing establishmens - all the way down to town council level.
Before this 'fighting for the farmer' arrived with Kas's contribution on here I had been keen to also campaign on the deviousness that food labelling is. These huge SM chains employ scheming marketing personnel to get around all sorts of things in an attempt to pull the wool over our eyes. I'm sure now that I'm sounding a cynical and miserable person but all I would like to see and read is THE TRUTH

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 12:06

PS. Did you say that you live in France some of the time ppea? Oh how I envy you. The French do respect their food and as far as I could tell, from holidays spent there, they don't put up with any old rubbish. DH and I, owing to monetary restraint, have only in the past few years been able to visit France. We love it and can't wait till next time. This year we caught the ferry to Santander and then motored all the way up the Western coast of France and returned from Cherbourg. We had a wonderful time.

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 12:09

PS again - I've got that wrong it's Bacon who's in France I think - haven't time to look back through now - is it you bacon?? in France I mean?

ppeatfruit · 17/11/2010 12:25

No Fifi it's me! We get the freshest food from our local market and we know the stallholders and the growers it's fab! It's not perfect though Macdonalds is v. popular Shock

kazwencol · 17/11/2010 12:43

Hi Fifi and ppeat, still no luck with facebook yet,SOORRY im not helping much here i feel. I am still interested in doing the petition. Fifi are NO,10 going to let us put a petition on there or do we have to have the signatures first before that can happen. Im also wondering wether mumsnet themselves could help us as this link is still going and i feel that people have lots to say on this matter. What do you think guys ???
Kaz

ppeatfruit · 17/11/2010 13:42

Yes there's a topic on campaigns isn't there?you could try it kaz.Smile

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 20:32

Yes Kaz - once No10 have got their Epetition site up and running I believe that we can give people our own special link to our post on there, so I'm sure that we can keep posting the link on here. There's an interesting post on here about what we feed our children with alot of interesting comment - I believe it's after the Panorama program this week about obesity and junk food.
Don't worry Kaz I'm a self taught computer user and a semi technophope - find my son's assistance a great help! Can quite understand your difficulties with facebook. I've quite alot of free time at the mo so will look into the 'campaign' thingy on here because if we can start that we might beable to join it up with the No 10 one. Infact I'll email No10 and ask them again 'when are they going to pull their finger out' Lets face it we are getting near to the end of the year now.

Mean't to add this am that my DH came home with a Poinsettia from Tesco's - where very little helps! It cost all of £2.50. Yes very admirable - a bargain at the price - I'm extremely happy with that, but at the same time I'm very concerned as to what the grower has made from it.

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 20:39

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnet_campaigns
Kaz - if you click on this link and read the advice at the top of the page it says that it is not for us to post our own petitions on but to discuss petitions that mumsnet has started up!! Killjoys!

Fifichef · 17/11/2010 21:36

Have just been on the No.10 website where they list the petitions that they have rejected. One of them is Stop Tesco's expansion in the UK and unfair tactics used against it's rivals Over the past 5 years they've rejected 38,265!
There is an update on there explaining that there is a review going on at the mo looking into how they operate their digital communications. The future of e-petitions are part of this abd they are expecting the results shortly. So I suppose - more delay.

ppeatfruit · 18/11/2010 10:52

That's typical of govts. they're all hand in hand with big business and we thought we lived in a democracy!!!

ppeatfruit · 18/11/2010 10:55

Fifi perhaps we should suggest that mumsnet take on board OUR petitions!

Fifichef · 18/11/2010 16:20

On their campaigns page mumsnet says ' Have your say' Which issues should Mumsnet throw it's campaigning weight behind. Whatever your thoughts, this is the place to raise them. Over to you!
We could try putting something on there but if there is any 'whiff' of petition they'll take it off.
If they think our cause is worthy they might take it up - the only thing is that it may have to be more 'family' orientated.

ppeatfruit · 18/11/2010 16:49

Problem being we talk about petitions on here don't we? they only have to look OOOOOH it's like Big Mother!! Get it?!

Fifichef · 18/11/2010 21:53

Nice one ppea - like it!! Probably have words tomorrow.

Fifichef · 20/11/2010 16:31

Hi all - thought I should post something to keep us on here a bit longer. Getting back to my grouse about labelling - I read the other day that Tesco labelled a piece of meat as being beef topside but it was top flank - subsequently they were fined. How much of this misrepresentation goes on? Let's face it - just looking at a piece of meat - how many of us will know the front from the back? The result with this 'little' error is that the customer would roast it and have a dense, probably rather tough piece of meat and wonder what they had done wrong with it. Topside costs more than top flank - draw the obvious conclusion. If any of you have tales about labelling - let's be having you!!

ppeatfruit · 21/11/2010 15:33

Could the thread be removed then? I didn't know.

kazwencol · 26/11/2010 18:41

Fifichef and PPeatfruit,
Hi Ya guys just to let you know that I do not have a computor thats working at the moment and thats why I havent been able to get on here. Hopefully I will get one in the new year in the January sales. I will try to come on here whenever I get a chance so I hope this thread is still here when I do. I also saw the news about tescos and selling flank and saying it was topside. They are a disgrace and i cannot beleive they didnt know. Thank god that the butcher noticed it when he did as i wouldnt be able to notice it myself. I wonder how many other products they are doing that with UUUUMMMMM !
BY for now folks and talk to you soon.KAZ
