Champions - about a horse rider who became ill.

Another oldie.

War Horse. The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. The Railway Man.

Omg I’d forgotten about the boy in the striped pyjamas. I’d only recommend this to someone I really didn’t like! 🤣 I think it scarred me for life 😢

Same. I could never watch it again. My daughter watched it in the cinema when it first came out, and at the end there was silence from the audience.m

Grave Of The Fireflies

Yes!!! Came on to say this.

Divebar2021 · 25/01/2026 14:48

Well Hamnet is a corker but god I’ve never cried as much as I did in Bridges of Madison County. ( and I’m not much of a crier )

Sophie's Choice

That's harrowing rather than sad

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 25/01/2026 14:54

It's not a sad story but for some reason I cry from beginning to end of The Sound of Music. I also sing. No one will watch it with me. Fair enough.

Life is Beautiful left me a wreck for days. I don't think I could watch it again.

Brief Encounter, Casablanca, Now Voyager, Goodbye Mr Chips ( Robert Donat version), first ten minutes of Up.

JoanChitty · 25/01/2026 14:57

One life. The story of Nicholas Winton who saved mainly Jewish children just before the Second World War. Lots of ugly crying.

Portrait of a lady on fire

ThisChirpyFox · 25/01/2026 15:01

Another one for step mom here.

But also I love watching Changeling. I'm not the biggest fan of Angelina Jolie, but she is amazing in this.

purpleme12 · 25/01/2026 15:06

Well the saddest film I've ever seen is A Monster Calls

Thatcannotberight · 25/01/2026 15:11

A.I. Artificial Intelligence with Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 25/01/2026 15:23

Train Dreams on Netflix, I was an absolute wreck!

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 25/01/2026 15:38

Atonement was just boring.
Sophie's Choice is harrowing!
Do you like old films? The saddest film i know is Au Hazard Balthazar. DH tried to educate the dc on film-this one devastated them. I did get questioned at school when dd said "Daddy made us watch the donkey film and I didn't like it"

Shadowlands. Sobbed like a baby.
The Hours.

upinaballoon · 25/01/2026 15:59

I saw Dr. Zhivago long ago and I always look back on that as being sad and I've never wanted to watch it all again on TV. Just two minutes at the end, with Julie Christie on a tram (?) I can manage, but not all the rest.
