The usual week before my period sadness is hitting and I need a release.

What are your go to films if you want to cry your eyes out?

On old 1960's movie called "Shenandoah" starring the great James Stewart about a large family, headed by pacifist widowed patriarch Stewart, which is reluctantly caught up in the American Civil War when the youngest son, Boy, is abducted by soldiers.

I haven't seen it for ages, because I've gotten older, I find some things touch my heart more than they did when I was younger. I can feel myself tearing up, getting ready for some snotty sobbing, just thinking about the film.

At his best, Stewart could be terrific, and this was probably his best.

Bridge to Terabithia.

Another plus, it's a short movie!

I don't think I could cope. The book had me a wreck.

Some picture books will have you in tears. Try "Badger's Parting Gifts". Just lovely, makes you teary but is also very joyous and life affirming.

I used to be a Teacher-Librarian in NSW. I don't know if you have that specific role in the UK. Each year I would try to familiarise the children with the short listed best books for my state. One was "Old Pig" which was about an anthropomorphised Grandma Pig preparing for her death. It sounds maudlin but it wasn't, it just had a solid reality and was firmly aimed at infants. I read it to a class of 6 year olds and was snivelling by the end, and some of the kids thought it was funny, but I explained it reminded of my personal experience and they accepted that. One little girl whose dad had died a couple of years before (I knew because I was reasonably friendly with the mum), but had never spoken about it at school came up to me and told me that her daddy had died, so I supposed it served a purpose.

The way we were

Yes! I've been reading these recommendations thinking "Really"??!! Most of them are far too saccharine for me. But this is a huge favourite of mine. And the ending does make me feel so sad ...

All of us strangers

I cried for a week every time I thought about this film after watching it. Clare Foy, Jamie Bell, Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal were all brilliant.

I second this. First watched it with my mum and omg.

Maraudingmarauders · 22/04/2026 22:37

Supernova with Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the cinema.
