I’ve not read the book but found the film really underwhelming. I wanted a thriller and I got meh!

Well I guess this is going to get a lot of streaming views in the next week or so

Saw it in the cinema and thought it was terrible. Was surprised that it kept picking up awards. I was really disappointed as the trailer looked so promising and thought we would get to know more about what happens behind the doors of a conclave but it was just a bunch of guys backstabbing each other. Maybe that is true to life, who knows.

And don’t get me started on the ending, it was awful and made me think I have just wasted two hours of my life watching this

Hoping the real life one that will be starting soon is more interesting than this film was

We watched it last night as we’d missed it at the cinema. It seemed like the perfect time to watch it. The whole family really enjoyed it from start to finish. I guess it’s a bit of a marmite film.

We’ll be watching it again - my 4th time. I love Ralph Fiennes

LivelyMintViper · 23/04/2025 18:36

I couldn't get past John Lithgow being an alien.

We watched it on Monday. It was good I thought, apart from the ending.

Watched last night. Ending was daft however I liked watching the process of the voting.

I thought it was a bit like a play you might see at the NT. Absorbing but definitely not a thriller (although I hadn’t heard that it was meant to be). Good film.

We watched it on Amazon Prime and loved it.
The acting was suburb (am a huge Ralph Fiennes fan) and it looked beautiful.

Don't care if the ending was 'far out' - it's fiction, people!

I read the book over Easter and burst out laughing at the start of the reveal at the end. Then it didn’t go how I thought it would so I ended the book slightly disappointed. I watched the movie on Prime and thought it was a bit dull too. It just felt like it was missing something.

NewAgeNewMe · 08/05/2025 07:35

Topical though!

I really enjoyed it and found it really engaging. Great performances. The final twist was ridiculous though and the film would have worked perfectly well without it

Exactly this

Watched it on Monday, loved it … until the end, surprised to hear it is in the book, it seemed forced

ErrolTheDragon · 08/05/2025 08:06

We watched it at home, enjoyed it though the ending didn’t really work - the ‘twist’ was almost irrelevant, I just couldn’t see the cardinals actually picking that person regardless of it. I mean it’d be nice but…no. Perhaps the book was better in that regard?

It occurred to me when we visited the Vatican, walking through the Sistine Chapel and reinforced by seeing the film with men in fancy outfits tended by monochrome women, thats an environment that’s got to fuck with your head and sense of your importance in the world.

This was exactly how I felt. The ending actually weakened an otherwise enjoyable film.

As a PP said, you need to read the book. A lot of unspoken thoughts are in there that makes it easier. It doesn’t make the ending such a surprise. Although I completely agree that the story doesn’t actually need it.
