I’ve not read the book but found the film really underwhelming. I wanted a thriller and I got meh!

I felt the same! Was expecting much more intrigue. I scored it a 7/10.

Britpopbaby · 07/12/2024 12:05

I thought the performances were great but I wanted something more thriller like.

I thought it was fantastic - but I'd read the book and knew I was getting mainly psephology.

BrandyandGinger · 07/12/2024 23:17

I really enjoyed it. It's essentially a soap opera with very good actors. John Lithgow is always very watchable.
I read the book so I knew what to expect but it's hard film to categorise. It isn't exactly a thriller and it isn't a very serious drama either.
I loved Isabella Rossellini in it. You can tell that's she's never had any work done to her face. She brought a bit of mischief to her role and it worked perfectly.

CrossPurposes · 12/12/2024 18:34

Just back from this and my first takeaway is why did it have a grey filter? So gloomy!

My second takeaway is how preposterous it was.

Fireworknight · 12/12/2024 18:38

Not seen the film, but the book is excellent and well worth a read.

MrsPringledusts · 12/12/2024 18:54

I've not seen it, but this is one of my favourite books, so I'm a bit reluctant to see the film in case it doesn't match the book!

Pelagi · 12/12/2024 18:57

I really enjoyed this film. I hadn’t read the book so I wasn’t already aware of the various twists. The whole thing is totally bonkers, obviously, and impossible for at least one if not two reasons, but the actors were all fab, and the cinematography very poetic.

Lottapianos · 12/12/2024 18:58

I really enjoyed it and found it really engaging. Great performances. The final twist was ridiculous though and the film would have worked perfectly well without it

Collette78 · 12/12/2024 18:59

Ah no I really wanted to see this now I don’t whether to !

BrandyandGinger · 12/12/2024 19:38

I don't want to do spoilers, but the final twist is a more important plot point in the book.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/12/2024 19:42

Oh bugger, just booked tickets for this and I haven't been to the cinema for years...

Ah well, I at least I can get a mango ice-cream tub at the interval, and maybe a box of Paynes Poppets at the kiosk, on the way in.

Cynic17 · 12/12/2024 19:43

I thought it was fantastic.... the feeling of claustrophobia, the sound, the wonderful Ralph Fiennes. And it was a thriller, just without any car chases. I've now gone back to read the book.....for the 3rd time!

iwantavuvezela · 12/12/2024 19:43

Just seen it and loved it

No it’s great! You have to suspend disbelief quite a bit but that’s ok!

Sausagenbacon · 14/12/2024 20:40

I loved it, wonderful acting, and it sounded and looked superb.
Two minor buts though-
While I love watching Stanley Tucci, I think he's become too much of a celebrity to carry roles successfully.
I thought the ending was ridiculous.

CannotBeBothered2025 · 14/12/2024 21:00

I've read the book and loved it and I've seen the film and loved it.

I think people have a misconception about what a thriller film is so I can understand the disappointment but this was a religious political film with some incredible performances. It was a slow burn but a great film.

My husband found it meh as well but he hadn't read the book and I didn't give much away to him. But he watched it as he knew how much I wanted to see it.

Yes the ending was crazy. I did a lot of googling to find out whether the circumstances described are actually physically possible and I concluded they are not 😄

HagathaChristi · 15/12/2024 14:12

While I really enjoyed it, I felt that it was the kind of film that is self conscious about being Oscar-worthy. Personally, I feel that there are better, more deserving films.

BruFord · 15/12/2024 14:14

I saw it with some friends and we all enjoyed it. None of us have read the book though so we didn’t know what to expect. Some fine acting.

I agree that the ending was daft and felt unnecessary.

You sound like the bloke who was sitting next to me in the cinema. Did you not take in all the stuff about closing them off and making sure they couldn't be spied on?

readingmakesmehappy · 15/12/2024 14:24

It looked so beautiful. The costumes and the cinematography were outstanding

@Sheknowsyouknowaye Yes, I thought it was supposed to feel claustrophobic and gloomy!

Oddly I did notice that but the colour palette and tone of the film was desaturated with a grey tinge even when they were outside. Maybe gloomy isn't quite the right word I was reaching for considering the film's subject - maybe drab would have been better.

Sausagenbacon · 15/12/2024 17:18

A weird thing happened at the showing I was at.
The guy behind me found it REALLY funny when the nun ditched the dirt on Trimley, as in roaring with laughter. Most off-putting.
