I’ve not read the book but found the film really underwhelming. I wanted a thriller and I got meh!

'The guy behind me found it REALLY funny when the nun ditched the dirt on Trimley, as in roaring with laughter. Most off-putting'

I HATE it when people roar their heads off in the cinema 🙄 there were a few mildly amusing moments in the film but nothing that hilarious!

Sheknowsyouknowaye · 16/12/2024 08:02

We went to our local independent cinema and we were about the youngest in the audience. Several mobile phones went off during the performance - we had satnav instructions, an alarm and a phone ringing - despite the announcement on screen to turn phones off. There were also people who kept oo-ing and ah-ing at things (weird and distracting) and a couple behind us periodically discussing what was going on, not as quietly as they probably though. What is wrong with people? It's not your bloody front room!

Sausagenbacon · 16/12/2024 10:36

I love going to the cinema, but always feel tense until the film starts, in case there are dicks in the audience.
Fwiw, I think Conclave is a film that needs to be seen at the cinema.

I thought it was fantastic.... the feeling of claustrophobia, the sound, the wonderful Ralph Fiennes. And it was a thriller, just without any car chases. I've now gone back to read the book.....for the 3rd time!

I loved it so much, I saw it a second time today, this time with a friend.

I liked the ending, in fact I liked everything about the film. I adore Ralph Fiennes

Toddlerteaplease · 24/12/2024 14:38

I've seen it twice. And don't for with an RC bishop, as he enjoyed it. But spent most of it commenting that the cardinals Mozzetas and rochets were too long. 🤣🤣

Toddlerteaplease · 24/12/2024 14:38

Don't go!

Lentilweaver · 06/01/2025 22:32

I hated the ending. Totally contrived, as was Vincent's Chat GPT speech. Liked the atmosphere.

nonbinaryfinery · 06/01/2025 22:35

I loved it, and the book.

Janlar · 06/01/2025 23:14

I enjoyed it, nice to watch something a bit more unusual and thought the acting was good. If you have booked don't be put off going, even if it isn't a classic you may well enjoy it

Lentilweaver · 06/01/2025 23:23

Yes I did enjoy watching a movie without CGI and superheroes and with plenty of dialogue. Good cinematography. Liked Ralph Fiennes and Tucci. Just did not like the final premise.

user1486915549 · 21/01/2025 19:04

Saw this today. I loved the political intrigue and self interest from the cardinals. I thought the final twist was totally unnecessary. It was a good enough twist without it.

TwentyKittens · 21/01/2025 19:14

I loved this film! The cinematography was amazing, and the pacing and acting excellent.

I did wonder when the thriller bit would be happening because I wouldn't particularly call it one, even though there were thriller bits in it.

I spent the whole film though thinking Anthony Head was in it, and wondering who was playing the Irish nun before realising she wasn't Irish.

The penultimate twist wasn't much of a twist for me, it was obvious as soon as the results of the first vote what would happen.

The final twist seemed a bit over the top though.

I loved that parts of it were in Latin and Italian and Spanish.

A weird thing happened at the showing I was at.
The guy behind me found it REALLY funny when the nun ditched the dirt on Trimley, as in roaring with laughter. Most off-putting.

This happened during one of the sadder parts of We Live in Time when I went to see it! In fact the bloke got up and started walking up and down the cinema laughing.

HoarFrostedWorld · 21/01/2025 22:51

they could have found a way to make the ending something scientifically plausible, which this wasn't. There are lots of similar things they could have done, slight changes to the backstory etc, that would have come up with something far-fetched but possible, that would have got the same point across.

upinaballoon · 28/02/2025 20:13

Was it meant to be a thriller? I didn't know so I didn't care. I liked it and would like to see it again. I liked the quietness of it. I learned some Italian following a visit to Rome many years ago so I enjoyed lots about it.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/03/2025 06:31

i thought it was excellent
and thought the ending was a great twist.

tiredoflondonbutnotlife · 26/03/2025 05:03

Beautifully shot in beautiful buildings. Great performances. Well written. Thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I could have done without the final twist at the end. Unnecessary.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 26/03/2025 06:26

The ending of the book is more nuanced than the film appears to be at first sight. The book has a lot of apparently inconsequential details woven into it which make the ending perfectly believable. I didn't see any of these in the film. In the book it's more of an explanation than a twist.

I agree with @tiredoflondonbutnotlife that it's a great watch for a number of reasons but none of them has to do with puzzling out 'what on earth is going on here', which is the main point of the book. Similarly the book is a great read but obviously without the impressive visuals of the film. I wouldn't even put them in the same genre.

Fatloss · 26/03/2025 06:35

I loved the film.As a Catholic I know some parts are unbelievable or just wrong but it isn’t a documentary.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/03/2025 07:01

I thought it was very good, although I haven't read the book, so if there was a car chase and a fight on the roof of the train that they omitted from the film I don't think it lost anything.

Quite topical too....🤔

HappydaysArehere · 26/03/2025 07:28

Loved the book.

colouringindoors · 26/03/2025 23:32

Finally saw it. Thought the cinematography was excellent and I enjoyed the insight into the process and possible politics. The last scene, with three nuns leaving the building and the door closing behind them was interesting to me - the door closing behind any known biological females having role in the Vatican?

SueblueNZ · 27/03/2025 01:19

I saw it with my partner and another couple, aged 68-75 and all of us lapsed/recovering Catholics.
Despite the antipathy I, as a feminist, have for the Catholic church, I went for the pomp, drama, white smoke process and high-campness of silly uniformed men. I got most of that - was disappointed that we didn't get to see the billowing white smoke. Stanley, Ralph and Isobella were great, as was the cinematography, costuming etc.
I agree that the outcome was laughingly implausible. It gave everyone in the cinema I attended a good giggle.

It’s to symbolise Freedom now the conclave has ended.

Was very disappointed with this film, the ending was just daft!!!
