if you don't want to spend 2 hours plus and not get a satisfactory ending...GRRRR!

OP posts:

Kevin Bacon was really underutilised.

Just watched it again

So rose just found the bunker before the others and the screen in there said raised radiation levels - which is what I put Archie's teeth loss down to.

The others were on their way .

She found solace in watching the last episode of friends which is what she cared about .

No clear baddies - just the implosion of society from the inside

The animal's navigation systems were messed up by the noise , the radiation, the chaos . All navigation systems were destroyed.

I really liked it . Scary because it was so easy . Could happen and not that far fetched .

Of course it couldn't! Nothing made sense.

And that's ok. It's not supposed to be realistic. But there has to be some premise for suspending disbelief.

I liked it, had M Night vibes, although lots of questions unanswered.

It really could easily happen. If all the countries that don’t like the USA decided to get together they could do this.

I really liked it. It was refreshing to have a more realistic depiction of what an apocalypse could look like. The lack of information, not knowing what was going on, no great hero coming in to save the day, people trying to keep things going on as normal when their world was falling apart.

You're all wrong, I've just finished it and thought it was excellent. But then, I loved the book as well.

I agree. I've just been talking about it to my colleague and he enjoyed it too.

AchillesLastStand · 13/12/2023 12:36

I’ve just watched it and found it really gripping. The shot of the US flag on the moon was a reference to American hegemony and its decline.

Oreosareawful · 13/12/2023 13:26

I enjoyed it, it was thought provoking.

I liked it and I usually hate films - short attention span!
JR has aged beautifully, I’m similar age and I’d kill for her hair…unless it’s a wig I guess!

Exactly this. So refreshing.

They should make a spin off where we could see Kevin’s side of it!

EmpressSoleil · 13/12/2023 21:22

I just watched this with very low expectations, so maybe that helped. But I thought it was really good and for me, the ending was perfect.

We got the explanation as to what had happened and what was going to happen. We didn't need to see any more of society breaking down. It wasn't that sort of film. There are tons of films that cover that aspect.

There had to be something in place to end the film and I think the girl finally getting to see the last episode of friends was a quirky way to do it. I get sick of films where a hero saves the day. So predictable. I like that you're left not knowing how things will turn out for them.

Nothing. There is nothing about Matthew Perry.

I liked it. I do wonder about those bunkers though. What do the uber rich think is going to happen when they eventually emerge? Life is magically restored to normal?

Stay in their bunkers until it all blows over . . . 😬

It's based on the book which had a similar open ended ending. I kinda liked it- the irony of "I'll be there for you" at the end when we know the entire point of the war was to turn everyone against each other. I quite liked the idea of showing the beginning of an apocalypse rather than the ending, it was unusual.

Edited

This.
I enjoyed it despite it being seriously creepy in places. The irony of her booking the house based on a 'Leave the world behind' advertising line. The fact that they're all dependent on screens - for tv endings, satnav, girlfriend info - but have missed the clues leading up to this event. I thought the 3 stages described at the end was spot on - people do turn on each other. But I did see the end as leading them all to the bunker. After that, well it's anyone's guess - which is pretty accurate in the scenario described.

nothing about him specifically, just the timing of him dying so recently and the movie constantly referencing Friends.

Its also funny that Julia Roberts appeared in Friends and she and Ruth at one point are having a conversation about the series.

ticketstickets · 16/12/2023 23:32

I thought it was great and liked the ending.

I assume they all get to the bunker in one peice, but who knows what happens next?

StillWantingADog · 22/12/2023 00:19

Just watched, ending was a bit “oh” but the more I think about it the more apt it was

it was an excellent portrayal of how people would react when they didn’t know wtf was going on(nor did the viewer). The whole three steps thing explained at the end is a depressing thought and can’t be that hard for anyone determined enough.
as the film showed, we’re extraordinarily vulnerable as a society. Take our communications, create panic, basically the end of life as we know it.

Disappointing movie Julia Roberts does lots of swearing it is ridiculous. I couldn’t finish watching because of that. There is no need! Also there is no explanation of things in the movie 👎bad director and writer.

There is an explanation. If you didn’t watch to the end then you wouldn’t see it. It’s not there explicitly, no one explains it, but you can work it out.

For those of us who watched to the end, liked it but didn’t ‘get it’ please explain. !!!!

There are plenty of explanations in this thread already if you could be bothered to read.

How do you know if you didn’t watch it until the end?
