if you don't want to spend 2 hours plus and not get a satisfactory ending...GRRRR!

OP posts:
AIstolemylunch · 10/12/2023 22:06

Yeah that's what I thought too, but I did wonder if maybe the daughter had locked herself in the bunker and then out.

CauliflowerBalti · 10/12/2023 22:53

The Spanish lady was telling him about the plane crash and 50 bodies on the beach, but in a very garbled and confused way.

CauliflowerBalti · 10/12/2023 22:57

That post was supposed to be a reply. Why didn’t that work?!

I quite enjoyed it. I especially liked that Rose got to know the ending of Friends, but we didn’t get to know the ending of the film.

The general lack of arsedeness about their kids and each other baffled me. I wouldn’t let them out of my sight. Rose wouldn’t have been able to run away.

The dancing scene was weird. And made worse by having subtitles on. The lyrics to that song are perfectly juvenile and facile and awful.

The cinematography was absolutely outstanding. Some of those tracking shots were insane. I’d love to see a making of and I’ll watch it again just to watch the camera fly around them in the car, or Julia Roberts walking upstairs.

But I liked the messages in it. I enjoyed it.

mishmased · 10/12/2023 23:58

Arghh...wish I had seen this thread earlier. I put it on while hanging clothes so not really watching but I was still like "what" at the end.

AngrySheep · 11/12/2023 00:12

I watched this with my teen DD, and we laughed a lot. It was so bad that it was brilliantly comical, so we had fun. I wouldn’t recommend it though even based on that… we stuck with it for hours, expecting it to improve .

RealBigBarbie · 11/12/2023 00:13

Awful film

bness · 11/12/2023 00:18

I didnt enjoy watching it - too slow, too bleak and dreary, but I liked the message. Weird that the Obamas directed it given B Obamas track record of green lighting a lot of conflict around in the world in his 8 years of presidency.

stoppingby · 11/12/2023 00:40

I actually really liked it and because the Obamas were behind it, it left me wondering if they were warning us that such a thing is possible. I mean, of course it is but when a former President makes a film about it, you've got to wonder.

Also, when G.H and Ruth first show up, I liked the subtle nod toward unconscious bias - e.g there's no way 'people like that' could own a house like that! But once their characters develop, it shows the viewer how wrong they were. I thought that was well done.

thelastrose · 11/12/2023 02:02

The bit on the screen in the bunker in the end about rogue armies attacking the White House reminded me of January 6. Really, the USA is not far away from a situation like this - it just take someone to light the touchpaper...

Hearmenow23 · 11/12/2023 03:59

I really enjoyed it.

CandyLeBonBon · 11/12/2023 05:04

I really liked it. I liked the messiness of the ending. That's like life isn't it?

TheaBrandt · 11/12/2023 05:13

I thought it was thought provoking. Made us as a family talk about what we would do. Dh wants to get some stuff in just in case!

Why are films so long now though? Used to be the odd blockbuster that was two hours plus now it’s the norm.

MadeOfAllWork · 11/12/2023 07:28

Just a small point of order, it wasn’t directed by the Obamas, they were producers. Very different.

When I sit down to watch a film I don't want it to be like life!

I want to be entertained and watch something with a proper conclusion...and have the weird things explained like why were the deer coming so close and staring at people and the flamingoes in the swimming pool?

OneMiniMincePieTooFar · 11/12/2023 07:47

Could have been worse, OP.

You could have a family that wasted the afternoon yesterday making you watch Candy Fucking Cane Lane with Eddie Murphy.

Two hours of torture. I'll never forgive them.

Noshowlomo · 11/12/2023 07:49

I loved it! However the ending… it would be really gripping if we knew there was a sequel on its way

Trinity65 · 11/12/2023 08:23

Completely agree with You

About an hour too long and the trailer showed the best bits

flowerchild2000 · 11/12/2023 08:27

The ending was that we (US) destroyed ourselves in civil war. It's an allegory about what happened here in 2016-now, especially 2020, and the ongoing fallout of rejecting climate science. Did you notice the Obamas produced it? For me it was too accurate to even enjoy. It was good though, and stellar performances. I'm enjoying some of Robert's gutsier roles lately. She was amazing in Homecoming too.

TheBoarRushedDownhill · 11/12/2023 08:27

I loved it. First film in a long time that has held my attention throughout. As other pps have described I thought the next stage for the two families was pretty clear. Never has the Friends theme music been more creepily apt.

I thought the deer/flamingoes was due to distruption of electromagnetic fields, probably what was used to crash all the mobile and communications systems. I’m not sure if deer migrate but maybe they are sensitive to such things and it made them all a bit loopy? Who knew deer could be so creepy though. Loved that.

It's been underway for awhile, I can confirm. When Trump was in office we had National Guard in every town and curfews at night. My town had to organize a citizen's police force to protect people of color, escorting them from home to work, etc. because they were being attacked in public by Trumpers. I've been going to civil rights protests for years and in 2020 I had to quit because it was so dangerous. One of the people in my group was shot in the street by a Trumper the day I decided to stop going. The pandemic years were so fucking traumatizing. I'm seriously scared for the next election. Anyways that's what the movie was about, that and climate denial, and it hit the mark perfectly.

Same. It was another layer of unsettling stuff

I thought some lines were good and how you’d talk

I was gripped from the tanker in the beach onwards

PurBal · 11/12/2023 08:37

We liked it, it didn’t need an ending. That was the point.

Nannyfannybanny · 11/12/2023 08:43

I am utterly amazed that anyone enjoyed it! It was boring. It was obvious that "rose" was an adult. I am even more surprised that my DH enjoyed it! I was amazed they managed to have running water and electricity. There are much better apocalyptic films out there.

LittleMonks11 · 11/12/2023 08:47

@flowerchild2000 hits the nail on the head. All those saying it was boring, didn't understand this and that - just need to think a bit deeper. It wasn't a popcorn movie. It has serious messaging and I found it to be strikingly, artistically shot and well acted.

It's not apocalyptic. It's about current events.
