if you don't want to spend 2 hours plus and not get a satisfactory ending...GRRRR!

I liked it. I do wonder about those bunkers though. What do the uber rich think is going to happen when they eventually emerge? Life is magically restored to normal?

I wondered that too. I'm not sure I'd want to live in a world where everyone is dead, plants/animals are all radioactive and you have to fight every day to survive. It sounds utterly miserable

Gettingbysomehow · 10/12/2023 09:44

Absolute tripe

mooncloud1 · 10/12/2023 09:48

Meh, it was enjoyable enough for an evening. Didn't get bored enough to switch off but probably wouldn't watch again.
Might read the book now though!

Laughingfaceemoji · 10/12/2023 09:52

The ending really annoyed me because so much of the film didn’t make sense. Why were the deer so weird? Why was there a random clip of the moon in the middle?

It was interesting that the Obamas directed it. I like the conspiracy theories that they are trying to tell us something.

Greekgreens · 10/12/2023 09:54

I enjoyed it.

They weren’t panicking about food yet as they weren’t thinking long term yet, it was set over a couple of days.
The woman playing Rose was really good, I was suprised to see she’s 18.

AppropriateAdult · 10/12/2023 09:58

I'm planning to watch it tonight, I loved the book.

mrsbyers · 10/12/2023 09:59

Literally just pressed play on it so thanks for the warning - off to find something else as I hate crap endings

crazyBadger · 10/12/2023 09:59

We watched it last night had a feeling it would end like that...
DH was not impressed and kept looking for a part 2

borntobequiet · 10/12/2023 10:04

Awful tosh. However I did watch it through to the end, so there must have been something good about it. I liked the oil tanker ploughing up the beach.

Pinkelephant66 · 10/12/2023 10:11

It had such good potential as well :( so many films have a shit rushed ending these days

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 10/12/2023 10:46

So what were the deer and flamingos about then?

WelshFionaThePlasticSurgeryGorgon · 10/12/2023 11:05

They kept on getting water too! 😂All we need is a power outage in our substation where I live for our water to go off never mind a world catastrophe 😂

It was odd, I did feel like I had wasted my time a bit, but I also think the ending was pretty clear on what was going to happen, however the whole film felt like it was really going somewhere and then it sort of didn't...

the deer thing was absolutely weird and not explained at all. it felt like it was going somewhere supernatural and then didn't. I didn't like all the weird shots that suddenly appeared to announce the next part, like the moon etc.

the bit with the cars was interesting. I noticed that they were all identical and was thinking, well that's a bit eerie and odd and then it was explained.

It could have been better though, it had a great cast. But if it was based on a book then I guess the book is to blame.

I loved the Friends connection though, that would have been me, ignoring the end of the world and trying to find out what happened in Friends Grin

piscofrisco · 10/12/2023 12:29

I thought the flami goes were escaping something that had happened in the south I think it was briefly mentioned on the crackly radio? No clue on the deer!

FannyFifer · 10/12/2023 12:30

We quite liked it & the ending. Xx

HandbagsnGladrags · 10/12/2023 12:32

We watched it last night and I liked it. Did you know that the actress who plays the daughter is actually 18?

TheWitche · 10/12/2023 12:35

It was crap, I kept thinking it would go somewhere and it didn’t. Most exciting part was when the boys teeth came out WTF

AnyFucker · 10/12/2023 12:37

It was garbage

MoisturiseYourMoose · 10/12/2023 12:49

God, it was dire. Watched it yesterday.

startquitting · 10/12/2023 13:44

I really liked it. The ending was clear. Rose telling the Drowning man metaphore was her explaining that the only one who could help them was themselves. And she said she couldn’t wait any longer for the final episode of Friend’s, throughout the film she asked her parents to help her but they said no. So she decided to help herself. You could hear her mum calling Rose from inside the bunker, so obviously they were nearby. We don’t need to be spoon fed everything, we had the same experience as the characters who didn’t know what was happening either. But as there was a mushroom cloud I assume they didn’t have much time left The message on the computer screen in the bunker explained some things.

I think the deer and flamingos was to symbolise that we should learn from nature and stick together like the animals do, and not turn on each other which we were told was the final step of the plan.

I found the music too loud and annoying.

startquitting · 10/12/2023 14:07

That’s what’s so scary about it is that we just don’t know. It could be a collapse of society, a cyber attack or a war. We have to fill in the blanks ourselves.

And no we never find out what happens to the other characters in the end, but I guess the lesson is that when a solution presents itself to you you need to take it.

Vitriolinsanity · 10/12/2023 15:22

The Bunker was amazing!

The rest, not so much.

Julia's looking good!

AIstolemylunch · 10/12/2023 16:49

I really liked it and haven't read the book. I did watch Mr Robot though so expected that tone/ending.

I actually thought it was unexpectedly hopeful at the end, I mean having a ready prepared bunker to go into. The reality for all of us if/when something like that happens is mass confusion and death which is pretty much what the film was showing the start of. And it would be every family for themselves wouldn't it?

MadeOfAllWork · 10/12/2023 18:10

I don’t understand what was unclear about the ending.

Kevin Bacon’s character told them about the bunker.
George said that that everyone was going to start turning on each other so they needed to get safe.
The daughter had previously seen that house when they found the shed.
Julia Roberts and the other girl saw the house.
They know that is where the daughter had gone due to the bike tracks so they will go there and find the daughter.
They will then get then dads and the son and stay there.

Edit: also it seemed that a lot of the houses there were weekend or summer homes so the owners of the house with the bunker were most likely in the city when everything went wrong.
